I went on this several times as a kid. I was fascinated with it. When I got my own blacklight for Christmas I tried to re-create a glowing waterfall in my backyard at night, using water and fluorescent paint. Unfortunately there have never been any really good films of the inside of Rainbow Caverns, showing how it truly looked with the colors. The only light was that given off by the fluorescent waters. Otherwise it was black. It was eerie and beautiful. The music was playing but the sound made by all the falling and splashing water almost drowned it out. There were fans to keep the air moving. If you rode the Mine Train in the daytime, it took your eyes a minute to adjust to the darkness. It was far better to ride at night, when your eyes were already adjusted. I've never seen a tribute or other glowing waterfall feature that looked like the Rainbow Caverns. The pools in Big Thunder Mountain Railroad are pretty, but don't recreate the glowing water effect. The Calico Mine Train at Knott's isn't even close. The closest thing is in Splash Mountain, where you pass by drops of water glowing green as they go up and down. It's a crime that they tore down the Rainbow Caverns. They could have incorporated it into Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, as the early part of the ride. They should rebuild this somewhere in one of the parks. Surely they must still have the blueprints for it somewhere in their archives. I've seen bits and pieces of the blueprints on some discussion groups.
Wow! I keep thinking that there must be the schematics for the caverns somewhere. I would love to recreate it somewhere, exactly as it was originally...
Amazing commentary. I know you're too young to have actually seen them, but I did and I can hardly describe how breathtaking the Rainbow Caverns were. No matter what I say, I'm going to be understating it. No little children cried on that portion of the ride--everybody's jaws were dropped in awe at the sights around them.
