A close friend of my dad's took me to see various wonderful people, like Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella, Oscar Peterson etc when I was 16, I'd liked Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis the same as my friends at the time. Then in 1963, he took me to see Sammy Davis Jr at the Prince of Wales! When we came out, he asked me what I thought, I was speechless! After that we went to at least 3 shows every time Sammy came over. While I bought his albums, usually backed by musicians from Basie's band and loved them, when he was on stage, he was a force of nature, electrifying, adorable, mesmerising just fantastic. His rapport with drummer Michael Silva and Johnny Mendoza was telepathic. I loved him, still do.

Just keep coming back time and again to this rendition - absolutely superb - this man was so underrated, I think Sinatra was the only one who truly recognised his talent.

What a great post. The lyrics are poetic genius and the melody is timeless. SDjr's interpretations are marvelous. SD was one of the top, pop music male vocalists of the 20th century. His multiple talents marked him a truly gifted entertainer.

I saw Sammy live in Melbourne in 1969 and never saw the point in seeing any other entertainer from then on. Nobody could match up to that talent.

Boy what a voice. Used to watch him on TV singing in 60s and 70s. This was a song my.mom used to sing in the house when I was growing up. She and her brothers in late 30s played and sang in NYC at clubs with the likes of clause tnornhill and the Dorsey Brothers. Are 2 That I remember. My.mom was 16 at the time. Gave it up to help support the family. She had a beautiful voice. But had her memories.

For those who might not know it; when Sammy had his awful car accident, Tony Curtis and Jeff Chandler went to the hospital to see him. Curtis place a Star of David in Sammy's hand just before he went into surgery. Hence Sammy's conversion to Judaism.

ropanueva As did Frank Sinatra who brought Sammy to Frank's home in Palm Springs and nursed him back to health, telling Sammy, "now you're going to be a superstar, stop feeling sorry for yourself."

@MsBedwell Er, what? He was one of the most popular and highest paid entertainers in the world, with a career stretching literally decades in everything from Broadway to recordings to TV to movies. I'm pretty sure he was recognized as a great talent by a whole lot of people. Nice try at commentary. Too bad it failed.
