Ta-Nehisi Coates & Danny Glover Make the Case for Reparations at Historic Congressional Hearing

  • In June, a subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee held a historic hearing on reparations for slavery-the first of its kind in over a decade. The hearing coincided with Juneteenth, a day that commemorates June 19, 1865, when slaves in Galveston, Texas, finally learned that the Emancipation Proclamation had abolished slavery. Ahead of the hearing, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, "I don't think reparations for something that happened 150 years ago, for whom none of us currently living are responsible, is a good idea." Award-winning author Ta-Nehisi Coates and actor Danny Glover testified at the historic congressional hearing on reparations.

I'm all ears... Should there be any limit to the reparations granted? Can someone accurately monetize this harm? Should it just be a one time payment or a forever commitment? For how many generations? How best to enforce them? Taxation? Forcibly taking assets? Who should pay, and who should be paid? Should there be any limits or exceptions? Who will oversee this so as to ensure justice is served and no further injustice is created? Anyone whatsoever have any of these specifics? I hear a lot of rhetoric, but I'm eagerly awaiting specifics of how this help can be provided.

Seems to me that we have bigger fish to fry. Currently, of all federal spending, 23% is for Social Security, 26% for four health-related programs (Medicare, Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program, tax subsidy for ObamaCare), and 10% for paying the interest on the national debt. Because of demographic changes in our population, the costs of these programs are going to increase in coming years. The debt is primarily because Social Security has been under-funded by employees for many years, and the shortfall met by borrowing. Note that all of the social programs I cited effect both Blacks and Whites.

I find my thinking to be somewhat more influenced by the words and facts said by 3 black Americans. However I still think reparations is a too simplistic idea. A bandaid on an chronic sore. I would rather have all laws eradicated from the books that disenfranchise black, native, poor. And other minorities. I would have communities built up to white standards. I would have education funding be equal to the wealthy. And small business loans that are exempt from taxes and interest. Meaning a no payback loan. My idea of reparations is to give tax exemption to black Americans for the next 100 years. My idea is to fund the black communities & minority communities with incentives. For the residents, of the community. I would give those communities police who are from the community for the service & protection of the community. Answerable to the community. Which is what all police should be anyway. There is far more, but these are but a few things that I have in mind.

Why not take the inspiration this panel displays in amazing fashion and do what they're doing? There's literally nothing here stopping you. And look, are the people you see in this segment merely waiting? No. There's also nothing stopping you from reaching out and learning from their efforts. Black Americans are the descendants of enslaved Indigenous Africans, supporting their efforts and being inspired to do the same would be an amazing act of INDIGENOUS SOLIDARITY. It's really refreshing, you should try it, especially because it makes for safer spaces for Black Native children and allows for easy communication between minority groups. Just saying.

How do you decide who pays and who receives? Do families who never owned slaves have to pay? How about blacks who did own slaves, do they just pay and not receive or both? How about families of whites or blacks that came to America after the Civil War, are they included in paying or receiving reparations? How about blacks that are worth as much as an average white family? Are they eligible as they are not apparently effected by the impact of slavery? How much should be paid? And finally the biggest question, if all of these hurdles are decided and reparations paid, does this finally settle any future claim of racial discrimination based upon slavery?

@ Big John - in order to fix the schools, the families, the cities, and the neighborhoods, a massive redistribution of economic and political power would have to happen. That would require white supremacy to undergo a moral and ethic epiphany.
As previously mentioned, the foundation of the U.S. is intentional systemic and institutionalized racism, economic and political exploitation and materialism, and for profit militarism that only benefits wealthy elites.
You have no moral or ethical ground to stand on what is or isn't a waste of money regarding reparations. The "money" wouldn't be free, it would be returned for unpaid or exploited labor.
I suggested you actually watch the video with the sound on and turned up. You can't have an understanding of anything without a lot of context.
Reparations isn't just about the centuries of enslavement. Its also the century of Jim Crow era, red lining, exclusion for the new deal, segregation and "separate but equal", exclusion from the GI Bill, police brutality, the war on drugs, the war on poor people, the prison industrial complex, etc.

Rather than monetary reparations how about free or subsidized housing for all destitute and poor folks in general; like how certain states have offered free housing to any homeless who need it because it saves the state 3fold by reducing trash cleanup, police services, thousand dollar taxis (I mean ambulances) and ER visits.
Like in Proverbs how it says the virtuous woman extends her hand to the poor and extends both her hands to the destitute.
Money isn't the ultimate answer. But bitter lack of money makes it seem so.
Shelter isn't the most important thing in the universe until you don't have it.
Rather than adress reparations for every African American how about adressing poverty in general, everyone enslaved by poverty and doubly enslaved by destitution? Because would we really be talking about monetary reparations if poverty and economic injustice and hate and/or apathy in our souls didn't lead African Americans en masse (and po' folks in general) --like cattle to slaughter-- to prison and early death. If we'd dealt with poverty we might already be in World to Come.

I don't understand this argument. Black people advocating for their own liberation does not preclude or prevent a fight for liberation from a class based, capitalist society. What is the impetus to try and turn them away from this effort? There are already fights for just that happening, and many on this panel participate in such activism. When Black people advocate for themselves is suddenly selfish, even though the entire society benefits from the spoils of chattel slavery and modern prison slavery, poor or not. It's absurd to me, that people supposedly well versed in the fight for civil rights would ever look at Black Americans advocating for their own survival, rights and reparations and say "but why aren't we just fighting for all poor folks in general?" When Black Americans gain anything in this society, the entire society benefits. Literally. Black Americans fighting for civil rights fomented every other rights movement in the nation, and was happily in solidarity with other groups and in the class struggle. Stop derailing Black history with a bunch of ahistorical flowery rhetoric, as if they aren't blazing a trail for us all. As usual.

Those of us in the Reparations movement, the last four to five years, wonder why Congress called on a panel of people who have no expertise in this area. Dr. Sandy Darrity of Duke University, Dr. Claude Anderson, Dr. Antonio Moore, and Yvette Carnell were never sought out, nor consulted? This Reparations movement isn't going anywhere, and the Democrats will have to come to terms with the independence of this movement. The aesthetics of the HR-40 hearing was appreciated. I'm sure Congress was more comfortable in picking and choosing its panelists, but did it pick and choose for the African American (ADOS) community Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Fannie Lou Hamer? We've (the African American community), only discovered the insidious nature of the Congressional Black Caucus, an organization made up of opportunist who have been entrenched in trafficking Black identity symbolism for their bread and butter. We'll see them at the voting polls where they are going to be summarily dismissed from the dereliction they have imposed on our community. Our neglect has been one of methodical socioeconomic engineering. We've decided to get off that train. Change has jumped the train tracks. Conductor, engineer? Hold on!

Mitch's argument that "those responsible for slavery are no longer alive" doesn't hold water. Many people still alive BENEFITED FINANCIALLY from slavery and it is time to give some of that money back to the exploited slaves's descendants. This is a matter of fairness and justice and we hope it may go toward healing our country. We need a BLUE wave in 2020 to help move the reparation process forward.

    • @atonsungod

There would be no Alaska, Oregon, Nevada, Hawaii, Utah without the free labor that allowed a country to prosper before its "manifest destiny" westward. That's called "history." Ever hear of "Jim Crow", "Red Lining?" Guess you didn't listen to Coates, probably like hearing and believing what you want to.

    Great speech Mr Coates.
I find it amazing that ppl will not admit the crimes against a race that has basically built this country with literally their blood sweat and tears.
The fact that most blacks suffer from so many forms of mental illness due to the poverty and unjust we have suffered and still suffer till this day is telling!
For those of you , white and black that dont want to see this happen and or can't seem to understand the implications of what the past had and still has on this nation . I pity you

I agree that the reparations idea is no good, but thats coz its an extremely narrow minded idea. Think bigger...MUCH bigger.
