Science #3 - How to Build Heated Grips

  • Build a cold weather bike set up like in this video. No more cold hands....EVER.
It's an easy trick that costs around £40 for the electronics. Ideally, you'll put your heated grips on a spare set of bars so you can keep them built up and swap them out for multiple winters.
A total game changer for racing in the alps when the weather turns or just keeping the fingers alive for a cold lap round the local.

Thanks Joe, I had been using hand warmers sellotaped to my grips. Much cleaner setup.

Excited for the cornering tips Joe! I want to understand the physics behind the shapes you pull because they sure are wild boi!

Used to love riding motorbikes with heated grips in winter wearing summer gloves, never occurred to me on the MTB, although rarely cold enough down in Devon!

This is awesome! You could use a little, light Lithium Ion RC battery for less bulk, just be careful charging/storing them and check the voltage/cell count!

Great video. Bought some elements to try this but haven't got round to it yet. Was just going to use old-fashioned stretchy BMX grips instead of lock-ons but was slightly apprehensive of getting revver-grip. By my calculations I was expecting to get about 2 hours out of a 3 cell 18650 4000mAh pack (stored in the steerer).

Need them toasty grips for the 11 months of cold we have here.

Love this! How does the charge last on the battery? Any scope for a smaller/lighter one or is this pretty optimal?

After that intro I expected you to chuck some burning sticks into the handlebars.

Stuff some kingspan insulation inside the bar and foil tape bar before wire. I tried a set of cheap push on grips but they didnt lock-on(cable tie would do) but fitted well.

I guess Spank did this by accident with their Vibrocore.

Genius, is there temp control, on off switch? Sell this to the public haha most people can’t handle the fab and all that but if u had a kit with proper grips for insurance you know. But I’m doin this for sure with on off switch and potentiometer to adjust temp.

Howdy, Joe. How many mAh capacity is the battery pack you use? How long will they put out heat on a full charge? I'm about to build a setup and am hoping to get at least 2, but hopefully 3, hours out of each charge.
Lastly, is that a NiMH battery you're using? I was planning on going lithium but am wondering if there is any specific reason you chose NiMH. Thank you!

Hey, Joe. Just wanted to reach out again. One more question. How many amp hours is the battery you chose? Thank you.

Looking at it and being an RC guy it looks at 4:16 like a regular RC car 6 cell NiMH pack and it should be around 3000-4000 mAh and 7.2 V nominal.
Using a 2s LiPo would increase capacity for the same weight (or decrease weight given capacity).
The LiPo has more requirements when it comes to charging, also it has to be protected from over-discharging so you need circuitry or a monitor for that.
I would argue that the main reason to stay off the LiPo in a race is that in the event of a crash causing damage to the battery or circuit they will burn violently.

Fascinating topic. Good video. Not great. Why include 40seconds intro of self-promotional fluff, and then leave out very relevant stuff like fixing the heat element to the bar? What kind of battery? Why not just put heat element inside bar? I hope it wasn't too much trouble to explicitly request comments then completely ignore everyone's questions over the last year. 👎
