Great comparison between two-way and three-way sound systems! Thank you so much for the detailed demonstration-it really helped to highlight the differences in sound quality. Appreciate your effort in making this so clear to our ears.
This is one of the best audio videos I've heard. If you would find the time to do the same test but with two exactly equal speakers for high and mid (mono setup) so that we can hear if there is a difference while the speakers being used for mid and high are the same, but because frequency is separated and each speaker has less temporal definition to adhere to, they sound better. It would be the BEST. See where I'm going with this?
What a phenomenally informative video for beginners in the audio world to understand the audio intricacies of Speaker-related configuration of multiple drivers. Would be awesome to see you do something similar in the Crossover domain of 1st, 2nd, 3rd order crossovers and their associated effects (positive/negative) on audio signal in general. :-)
Thank you for your comment. I thought that what you pointed out refers to the polarity of the signal you add to each speaker unit. The setting of this video has the same polarity. It is often said that Low and Hi are of the same polarity and Mid is of opposite polarity. I have not Listened carefully in this setting, so I'd like to try it. :)
I am not certain what this was aiming to demonstrate. If you had two loudspeaker systems (a two-way and a three-way) designed with the same frequency response and, roughly equivalent performance then, switched from one to the other, that would be a comparison of a three way system and a two way system. You could even have two versions of the same speaker with two carefully designed crossovers that allow it to run as a two way Tweeter/bass-midrange or, as a three way Tweeter/midrange/bass. Your sound seemed to vary in bandwidth because you were playing what was left behind by the crossover when you switched off a drive unit. That isn’t a demonstration of a two way speaker vs a three way speaker. I may be missing the point but, I arrived expecting a demonstration of what a dedicated midrange driver brings to music reproduction.
Wow! was looking for something like this to actually hear the difference between a 2-way and 3-way. Trying to listen to different speakers with 2-way and 3-way did not seem to be a good comparison, it introduces a lot of variables. It does gives some validity to what I hear when I use my 2-way speakers compared to 3-way. I don't want to mention the types because then it becomes a conversation about which speakers are better. Thanks for the video!
Hi. can you gave me any suggestion.. best for 3way set up full range. sizes of tweeter, mid range, woofer.. room size about 150sq.meter. thanks in advance.
old video but here's my 2-cents, the 2 way sounds just like bose, no low - no high, the best speaker setup/configurations minimum is 3-way to achieve really a full range sound, but still you can go much more than 3-way, but the problem is the crossover design and construction and speaker driver selections, good job in your demo..........
this video is fucking amazing and truly a hidden gem on the internet! I am 100% a newb, but like other comments, I'm real curious about hearing the difference when adjusting the mid/tweeter crossover ... the fuller sound is incredible though!
great video! it clearly demos the 2 way vs 3 way and of course we all knew that 3 way is the way to go ..at least i knew ..thanks again... a truly awesome video
So in the 3-way setup you have a tweeter, mid range driver, and sub. Then in the 2-way setup you eliminated the tweeter and used the mid range for high frequencies? If that is the case wouldn't a more accurate comparison configure the 2-way set up to use the tweeter for high frequencies and larger driver for both the sub and mid range frequencies. What is mean is... Aren't the subs better at producing mids than the mids are at producing highs? The demo was interesting and fun to listen to it just doesn't seem this setup was meant to be used in a two way configuration. Getting rid of the tweeters and calling it 2-way isn't really fair to setups that were designed to be used as 2-way.
Thank you for your comment. The frequency performance of the mid driver TD-4001 covers from 600 Hz to 20 KHz. There is TAD 2402 as a typical speaker using this driver. It is a 2 way system combining Woofer TL-1601a. So, I added Tweater ET-703 to 2 way and extended it to 3 way, and I wanted to check their difference.
@@bushinyan Speaker designers would be make these components sound better in two-way . This is not a fair or accurate comparison. Each system is different , by design. There are 3-wyas that sound better thyan two-ways and two-ways that sound better than three-ways. ,Your example , while fun, in no way represents a real comparison. The tweeter is louder ..and don't get me started on the audio quality of UA-cam haha
Hello! Thank you for your comment. The recorded sound and the direct listening sound in the room are quite different, so if you have a chance to listen and compare them, please listen directly to the sounds actually output from the speakers. I think there are new discoveries and awareness. I hope that you will have a good experience :)
I may be wrong...but 2-way speakers usually have a "tweeter" and "middle-low-freq"-speaker. Where 3 way ones have "tweeter" "middle-freq" -speaker and "low-freq"-spaker. In your video you are using "middle-freq" speaker for "high-freq" and "middle-freq". The sound will be way different, if you use "tweeter" and "middle-low--freq" vs. 3-way. Or do i misunderstand the picture showing the speakers?
Anyhow, when its a 3 way the woofer has less to do and can concentrate on only the low frequencies. Each driver has a specific task to do so it wont sound messy. This is why most ultra high end speakers are 3 ways 4 ways 5 ways and maybe more.
This video is my private experiment which checked the difference by changing the setting of my audio system. Since the sound quality is influenced by various parameters such as the structure of the room, the characteristics and composition of equipment, I think that it is important to listen and compare while making the difference as little as possible.
A good real life example is the Swans M300 vs the M300 mkII. Yeah I know I know that the dsp is a bit different on both but its a good example what a good 3 way can do to a good 2 way. This is also why most ultra high end speakers are 3 way or more.
If you are just doing stereo then you either want dual 3-ways or 2-ways with a powered sub (with built-in crossover). How these will sound depends on the amp, speakers, and room. The cost of these two configurations is about the same, and it is wise to audition both. But I agree the safest bet is good 3-ways and a good amp. I also think a system with 3-ways sounds better as you move around the room. There is a lot of high-end audio nonsense on UA-cam that presumes we sit in some sweet spot for 2 hours straight drinking $300 scotch.
Very cool......I do like the 3way but when the mid is brought in it sounds a tiny bit loud, its very clear but may work being attenuated if thats the correct term.... The 2 way is a very rounding easy listening sound.....not harsh at all...
I wonder where I can get an amplifier that has the option to set your own crossover frequency and then amplify low, mid and high speakers on separate channels. Does something like that exist?
Easily done if you know your stuff.a low wattage valve amp for the highs and a mono power amp for the lows .but i think it will need adjusting the drivers everytime you play a different song or track.
You should look up active crossovers...these are available all over and all come with a dedicated Sub-Woofer out..+ 3 or 4 way or more and some models also have selectable 12/24 dB/ octave slope settings. so 3 way + sub requires 4 seperate amps...or 4 stereo amps for R+L active setup.
I really like what you are doing, simple no bs videos. Just to be sure, I had problems because of one old video containing copyrighted song. Please use only free to use songs, if you find it possible. Otherwise you risk your channel be deleted.
In comparing 2 way & 3 way..a true comparison would be with the 2 way as you have done ... But for 3 way the the high shoul have been with an additional TD-4001 & not with a new component(tweeter)...... this could also be in mono...if an extra TD-4001 is not available... The mids & highs being crucial to QUALITY HI-FI sound would play out better..in seperation..... Since all speakers here ,( in both cases)..would have the same sensitivity levels... Adding a top is changing the sensitivity level of the upper frequencies..😢
easy peasy to distinguish. clearly the soundstage is wide open with a 3 way, since it has a tweeter, midrange and woofer, for a full dynamic range, vs a 2 way that is just a tweeter and combined woofer/midrange.
For a long time listening 2 way is good. 3 way is good for short time listening. because the trebles makes us ear uncomfortable when we listen long time.
Very nice video ! The different is huge as i can listen from the video ! 3 way sounds more musical and full frequency range ! The 2 way are very smooth but also feel like some frequencies missing from the song! I love car audio and i can tell that in the car the different from 2 way to 3 way is like day and night !
Thank you! There are many obstacles in the car, and since the position to listen to is not the center of the speaker, it seems to be difficult to bring out good sound. However, music is indispensable for driving! :)
Two way only lacks the highest frequencies I can live without. On 3 way I can hear the cross stick on snare drum and hi hats come more to the front, also esses on vocals become more harsh in a way. But drums definitely sound better on 3 way. But 2 way sounds more musical and smooth if you ask me.
The channel divider is digital, so you can instantly change the setting. Depending on the mood at that time, I switch and listen. When listening to a blue note, I think that 2 ways are suitable.

He tested both of them at same frequency ranges, with same cut-offs for both speakers so you can tell the differences between the speaker set-ups with in them better. He also played them without cutting any of the frrequencies.
This deserves more views. Thank you for this amazingly helpful demonstration!
I am pleased that you like it.Thanks! :)

This video was the deciding factor on my next speaker purchase. 3-way it is. Thanks for the upload!
Thank you for your comment.
I wanted to try the difference, so I did a feasibility study.
I am glad that you can refer to this video.
what, you needed a video to decide that!!
@Brixton Anderson @Devin Watson no one cares you stupid lowlifes

Great upload. Great settings you have in there. Buying 3 way setups for my car
I can tell there's more treble in the 3-way speakers?
Better middle frequencies
what about 2.5 way vs 3 way? would be much closer
The best comparison ive heard... thank you...
Awesome..thank you for making this..i guess its the only 1 that clearly demonstrates 2 way vs 3 ways diff

agree. the 2 way high transducer seem not able to produce high frequency. the 2 way design is not a proper one.
i was looking for this thank you so much :)
Thank you :)
bushinyan much appreciated !
Easiest way to know the diff between 2way & 3way
Thank you for ur hardwork.. Sir

now ive'd decided to install highs on my 2 way speaker sound great thanks !
So with the 3way speakers I need to buy the sub for the lows?
I thought the 3 way speaker had incorporated the lows mids and highs
Thank You so much for such great video

hi is it posible to combine 2 way speaker and 3 way speakers in 1 amplifier as long the amplifier can carry the watts.?
Much respect. I listened while wearing my Bose Q35's and was blown away. 3 way is the way to go.

True, 3 say speakers just have more information, some 2 way speakers can also have plenty of details though
I don"t know if I agree with this, I have 2ways and they sound much better then yours. I think it honestly comes down to the speakers.
This video is my private experiment which checked the difference by changing the setting of my audio system. I think so, too.
If you enjoy watching the video, I'm happy!
Song name?
Walking Away [duet with Craig David ], ok?
superb comparision
so.. which is for the bass? 2 way or 3 way?
I think it is 2 way.
As the high frequency does not extend, the overall balance will be closer to the low frequency.
A long time, easy to listen.
Go 3 way bro
For me, 3 way speaker is great for music lover
Lovly 🥳

what is goin on at 1:42 imo it sound the best. I also like 2:17... 2:38 is also good.
Thank you for your comment that specifically indicated the time-position.
I like the speaker sound that I feel with the whole body :)
easy peasy to distinguish. clearly the soundstage is wide open with a 3 way, since it has a tweeter, midrange and woofer, for a full dynamic range, vs a 2 way that is just a tweeter and combined woofer/midrange.
Boss ano po bang pagkakaiba ng 2way sa 3way bakit mas mahal ang 3way sa 2way? hindi ko kasi magets yung video.. Paiba iba ng tunog..?
For a long time listening 2 way is good. 3 way is good for short time listening. because the trebles makes us ear uncomfortable when we listen long time.
Generally speaking, 2-way speakers sound more live-like and organic, on the other hand, 3-way speakers excel in clarity.
I think so.
Since the channel divider is digital type, I can easily change the mode.
It is useful because I can try various settings ...
False. Most ultra high end speakers are 3 4 5 ways, and maybe more. Its more complicated to build but when done right, 2 ways are no match.
I can't decide which one i like more lol
Low freq should be 20hz or 18hz
For my 2nd HT in the basement I am getting 3 way speakers.
the three way sounds like tinsel....too scratchy and thin...
Thank You!
Yep, best vs video on the internet.
Very nice video !
The different is huge as i can listen from the video !

MenfisRetroSpace My personal opinion is 3 way all day , every day !
Much better dynamics and way better front stage !
nikos raptis I m very confused about two way and three way this film able to select the right path

wonderful
Thank you for your vdo...it help..
thank you
I am using same units and drivers. I cross at 12khz, I like it sounds more warmth. Et-703 sounds better at 8k and above.
Thank you for your infomation. I will try do it :)
Awesome bro, well explained

which you think is better?
The channel divider is digital, so you can instantly change the setting.
Depending on the mood at that time, I switch and listen.
When listening to a blue note, I think that 2 ways are suitable.
Bass med woofer and hi is the same as 3 way
i do enjoy 2 ways but 3 ways are much more fun !LOL
Very usefull
Thank you :)
In search of my favorite sound, trial and error with that or this. It's serious, but it's fun.
Yo-kai Watch?
the best 3way speaker...
Thank you for your comment.
I do not think 3WAY is always the best. In my case, I feel that 3 WAY is sharper than 2 WAY and reality increases. Since the TD-4001 driver unit covers from 500 Hz to 20 KHz, it is sufficient for specifications. However, when actually listening to the combination of TL-1601 and TD-4001, I feel that the high range is unsatisfactory. I often see those who are adding high frequency speaker units. It would be nice if it could be covered flat from low to high with one speaker...
god bless you.
now i can argue again with some smartasses-
Thanx.. Godbless
great
Good
Nice amps.
Thanks :)
bushinyan What brand and model?
Brand:Accuphase Model:PX-600
bushinyan thanks, I have two amps... Harman Kardon HK770 and Onkyo M501. Not much compared to yours.
Mark-san, I do not think so.
I used four different amplifiers to drive the 4-way speaker (SONY SS-G9).
The amplifier was YAMAHA*1, SONY*1, CROWN*2.
Even without unifying the amplifiers, I have a strange experience with a sharp and transparent sound. Therefore, it is important to prepare an amplifier to divide individual speakers into frequencies rather than brands and models. By all means, with the two amps you have, drive the speaker unit individually, please try it.
If you have never tried a multi-amp yet, you will be surprised :)
3 way or 2.1 all the way.
2 way
Your comparison is flawed, 2 ways don't cut off attached 500 hz
He tested both of them at same frequency ranges, with same cut-offs for both speakers so you can tell the differences between the speaker set-ups with in them better. He also played them without cutting any of the frrequencies.
3way: much better
I wanted to make it sound clear, I added the Tweeter unit.
4/way
Lol joke
