Agreed. This book was a "page-turner" but only to see how it would unfold. SPOILER ALERT: My favorite part was Brady discovering his alcoholic mother had eaten the poison hamburger for dinner. This was King returning to form...a signature mixture of comic absurdity with graphic horror. Brady going down to get on his computer...waiting for his mother to die on the couch upstairs. Brilliant King. A week after I read this I could still hear that woman calling out "Braythee!" as the poison took affect.
I've only read two Stephen King books (The Shining, and Revival) and I loved them both. I'm getting Mr. Mercedes tomorrow because I want to read it before the sequel (Finders Keepers) comes out in June. Great review.
Can you please review "It" by Stephen King soon? You're my new favorite reviewer and I'm curious of your opinions on that book, if you've read it. Thanks. :)
This book is original, riveting and definitely worth reading. The story is very good and interesting. I always like a good crime story, this is a crime story that’s very interesting and well written. Thanks
Another great review Emily, I just finished this and agree, King's characterizations were once again solid and brilliantly developed (his greatest strength) and the climax really was gripping but stopped short of being among his best (which IMHO is The Stand). Looking forward to his next one Revival, which I hope you review too!
Thanks Steve! :) I can't wait for King's next book! I love that he's been able to write so many things and still come up with novels that still blow my mind! I will for sure keep reviewing King!
Brendan Gleeson was excellent as Detective Hodges in part one of Mr Mercedes that I saw on youtube. Had to buy the book. Judging from the first 200 pages it's the best book I have read in quite a while
Aufa Ahdan Thanks! I always try and keep things spoiler free or at least clearly mark spoilers. I'm glad I didn't ruin much for you! Are you going to check out the sequel Finders Keepers?
Aufa Ahdan I finished Finders Keepers about a week ago. It was much better than the first (in my opinion) and I will definitely be putting up a review for it shortly. :)
Stephen King is such a great author! The first book i've read from him is Carrie. Carrie is not what I expected that she was a ghost and she died in a bloody way instead a total way 'round. I bought Mr Mercedes last week and finished it now. It was amazing...
I just finished reading the sequel Finders Keepers, which was entertaining - and got gripping towards the end. But the story was simple, but the villian Monty Bellemy was a real nasty piece of work, but like all Stephen King characters, they all very well fleshed out. But I read somewhere the next book in this trilogy, is going to be the best one. Because it involves the bad guy in Mr. Mercedes .
This was very informative and helpful! I've been contemplating about buying this but I think I'll wait for a paperback or maybe Christmas for this. Great review
Great review! This sounds really good. I have yet to read a single Stephen King book unfortunately, haha! I kind of want to get into some of his more popular works first and then move on into his newer stuff eventually.
Yeah, I think that's definitely the way to go. I feel like there is this popular 'idea' about what a Steven King book is and if you start with a recent one you just won't get that same feeling. I still like a lot of his more recent works, but they definitely have a different 'feeling' compared to his older works.... if that makes any sense :P
Emily Cait Yeah, that totally makes sense. Most booktubers who read a lot of Stephen King say the same thing, so I'm gonna trust everyone's opinions to start with the early stuff first.
I enjoyed Mr. Mercedes but I found myself having a harder time to really get in to the book the way I have with all the other Steven King books I've read. this is because the villain, Brady, disgusted me so much. it was kind of a depressing read actually because of Brady's character. he just ended up bringing me down. I know there are sick twisted people out there in the world, like Brady. and having to deal with those kinda thoughts, which was a byproduct of reading Mr. Mercedes just killed my spirits.
I feel you! I can stand killer monsters but when it’s about domestic abuse (hint: Frankie), UGGHHH I’m so disgusted with Brady and his mom. I think maybe because those types of monster are real in our average life, that’s why I scared more on Brady than killer monsters.
I always thought the part where King describes the ,ives of people is better then the supernatural parts so im glad Im getting moore of that in the books about Hodges.
King does do a really good job with building believable characters. It's one of the things that I love about his writing. :) Have fun reading the rest of the Hodges trilogy!
Great review! Just found your channel, and I really enjoy watching your videos! I'm a huge King fan as well. This wasn't my favorite of his books but the whole Bill Hodges Trilogy is really good overall.
Excuse me but do you think this is appropriate for me I’m 14 and have read different seasons (I thought it was great) I have seen many of Stephen kings movies (pet seminary both IT movies misery the shining (kubric) shawshank redemption stand by me all of castle rock and more) I picked it up at a dollarama for $4 thought it was a good deal I’m also reading kings most recent novel elevation
Have you already read Finder's Keepers? I'm a big fan since I first read The Shining 20 yrs back. Unfortunately the novels after his accident do not quite stand against his older works. I consider The Dark Tower series pre-accident since he was working in it for so long before that happened.
Awesome, this is really awesome. I'm still learning how to speak english and I also was looking for a review of this book. Usually I watch a review from my country because I can understand , but today I tried something new. Nice review, without spoilers and very easy to understand your point: Is a good book that shows you everything you need to know but is not awesome because don't have the mistery
Mr. Mercedes and Finders Keepers may have been average insofar as King goes, but that still means they were fantastic. I would give Brady better-than-average marks for a King villain though. He's obviously no Pennywise or Flagg, but still very interesting. By contrast, while I think Doctor Sleep was in many ways a more interesting novel, Rose and the True Knot were quite lame.
I just finished reading this the other day and while I really enjoyed it, I agree it's not his normal style. It almost felt more like a Michael Crichton or Dan Brown novel. That said, it was still very frightening because people like Brady (Mr. Mercedes) really do exist.
I haven't read the Dark Towers. I've gotten some mixed feedback about them. Some people seem to love them, other people feel they got too weird. :P What do you like about the series?
Emily Cait I really like the world he created. The characters are very well developed and the story is incredible. At rimes the story seems to drag on for a bit BUT its not much and everything else makes up for it. By far my fav from Stephen King!
Xenobia Xaphan I think I might reread the first book in the Dark Tower series this year and go from there. I usually enjoy series because I like spending a lot of time with the characters I really like, so hearing that the characters are well developed really makes me want to give the series a second chance. :)
I'm happy to hear you're reading Mr Mercedes! I hope it went well for you. I have no opinions of Cussler or Clancy -- I`ve never read any of their works.
What Stephen King book would you recommend to someone who hates horror? I get scared easily but I really want to read one of his books! I was thinking the books based on Stand By Me/ The Shawshank Redemption since I like those films, but they're just short stories. Btw, I'd love to see a bookshelf tour and how you organise your books! (I'm nosy)
For a non-horror novel I'd have to recommend Under the Dome or 11/22/63. Under the Dome the book, is VERY different from the tv series (if you've seen that/followed that at all). It's more about the very messed up things that people can/will do when their put in a weird potentially life-threatening situation. 11/22/63 is about a man who finds a rip in time and goes back to shortly before JFK is assassinated and decides to try and stop the assassination. I really enjoyed both, although if I had to pick one over the other, I'd say go for 11/22/63. I liked the concept of finding a rip in time better. Hopefully this is helpful :) I didn't realize people would be interested in a book shelf tour. I've got a bunch of stuff pre-filmed right now, but I can definitely work on filming a bookshelf tour for sometime in August maybe :P.
thanks, for lesson and good explain about books ,you are, Great teacher,I do not know how to thank you, I appreciate this wonderful work, deserve more than thanks.really i like you.i hope you the future good Writer.
Hi,Emily! I Think the same about the book. Here in Italy are waiting for september 21 to read Finders Keepers (Chi perde paga/ Loser pays) Can you write me the meaning of "finders keepers" in a few words please?
I'm here since I checked out the book "End of watch" without even knowing that it was a novel. haha don't know how this happened. but anyways I'm here to catch up on what's going on. but is "Finders keepers" a good book? They say its not really worth reading it since its quite differently from "Mr.Mercedes"
It is more of a standalone, but I liked the idea of finding unpublished works by your favorite author. Would you keep them to yourself, or share them with the world?
The book is a cringe fest. Like seriously. The fedora-wearing cop who won't shut-up. He's the kind of person you see and just instantly hate. The book felt apologetic.
Am I the only one that first reads the books and then looks up for reviews just to see what others think of them?
Travis Petit I just did the samething.
Travis Petit hell yea I do the same thing
same here
same

love this book so much, love the way it's written and the reader sees perspectives from both "villain" and "hero" and the tension building is insane😍
This was my first Stephen King book I have ever read, I am hooked! love this trilogy and can't wait for the tv series.
I'm glad you loved your first Stephen King book! Happy reading! :)
Agreed. This book was a "page-turner" but only to see how it would unfold.
SPOILER ALERT:
My favorite part was Brady discovering his alcoholic mother had eaten the poison hamburger for dinner. This was King returning to form...a signature mixture of comic absurdity with graphic horror. Brady going down to get on his computer...waiting for his mother to die on the couch upstairs. Brilliant King.
A week after I read this I could still hear that woman calling out "Braythee!" as the poison took affect.
That was a really disturbing moment. Brilliantly done on King's part!
This is my second favorite Stephen king book. This book is sooooo good
Great review! Not my favorite King book ever, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Written in his prime. A classic
I've only read two Stephen King books (The Shining, and Revival) and I loved them both. I'm getting Mr. Mercedes tomorrow because I want to read it before the sequel (Finders Keepers) comes out in June. Great review.

I'm not usually a review watching person but I always enjoy your reviews!
As always, Great video :)
Aww shucks! Thank you Zahra!
You're welcome
What is the significance of the blue umbrella on the cover? Any way you can say without spoilers?
I think it's a reference to a certain website mentioned in the book. Hopefully that is vague enough not to spoil anything? :P
Brendan Gleeson was excellent as Detective Hodges in part one of Mr Mercedes that I saw on youtube. Had to buy the book. Judging from the first 200 pages it's the best book I have read in quite a while
Hi, Emily! I'm currently reading Mr. Mercedes and thankfully you didn't really spoil much lol
Great review and hey, I'm subscribing:)
Aufa Ahdan Thanks! I always try and keep things spoiler free or at least clearly mark spoilers. I'm glad I didn't ruin much for you! Are you going to check out the sequel Finders Keepers?
Of course! Right after I finish the first. Are you already going to review Finders Keepers?
Aufa Ahdan I finished Finders Keepers about a week ago. It was much better than the first (in my opinion) and I will definitely be putting up a review for it shortly. :)

Francis Sookraj Shit don't mean shit.
Ethan Fisher-Perez 😂
I enjoyed Mr. Mercedes. It's part one of Stephen King's Bill Hodges Trilogy. Part two is called Finders Keepers. Coming 6/2/15.
This was very informative and helpful! I've been contemplating about buying this but I think I'll wait for a paperback or maybe Christmas for this. Great review
Thank you! I'm glad you found my review helpful. :)
Good review. I notices 11/22/63 in the background. How good was that book!?!?!
I know! I really liked the time travel concept 11/22/63! I thought it was a pretty fun read. :)
Definitely. One of the best!
Nice book much better than Mr. Mercedes BTW Mr mercedes is also a good book. Actually most of the Stephen Kings books are good.
Mark Peterson 11/22/63 was fabulous. i became so obsessed with that book, and still am. If you are a King fan it is a must read, my favorite book!
i just bought 11 22 63! but i need to finish up the revival first
Great review! This sounds really good. I have yet to read a single Stephen King book unfortunately, haha! I kind of want to get into some of his more popular works first and then move on into his newer stuff eventually.

Brady is a terrible human. If you continue on with the series this fact will only be underscored. :s
I feel you! I can stand killer monsters but when it’s about domestic abuse (hint: Frankie), UGGHHH I’m so disgusted with Brady and his mom. I think maybe because those types of monster are real in our average life, that’s why I scared more on Brady than killer monsters.

Emily Cait Just sat down after dinner to keep reading:)
Great review! Just found your channel, and I really enjoy watching your videos! I'm a huge King fan as well. This wasn't my favorite of his books but the whole Bill Hodges Trilogy is really good overall.
Mr Mercedes was the Second Stephen King Book i read, right After “1922”
Cool
Excuse me but do you think this is appropriate for me I’m 14 and have read different seasons (I thought it was great) I have seen many of Stephen kings movies (pet seminary both IT movies misery the shining (kubric) shawshank redemption stand by me all of castle rock and more) I picked it up at a dollarama for $4 thought it was a good deal I’m also reading kings most recent novel elevation

Emily Cait thank you and nice review

Awesome review! My next book is going to be Mr. Mercedes. :) Love all King's books..
The retired or near-retired police officer trope is beyond cliche at this point.
I haven't read this book but I think it's a bit like secret window (my favourite) and that the retired detective is the killer but idk
I just finished reading this the other day and while I really enjoyed it, I agree it's not his normal style. It almost felt more like a Michael Crichton or Dan Brown novel. That said, it was still very frightening because people like Brady (Mr. Mercedes) really do exist.

Yay! Finders Keepers was my favorite novel in the trilogy! Happy reading! :)
Loved it, have you read the dark towers? My fav! :)

I didn't even get it started. .. Ed Lorn told me it's a bad idea to start there.. I should start with his 1st book..
loved the Bill Hodges trilagy

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, or Fire Starter!
thanks, I'll check those out! I LOVE thrillers but not horror, has he written any good thrillers that aren't too scary?
How about his "The Long Walk"
skip it! Was a Bachman book, he, King could only write so many books for his publisher. The excess is not really up to par
thanks, for lesson and good explain about books ,you are, Great teacher,I do not know how to thank you, I appreciate this wonderful work, deserve more than thanks.really i like you.i hope you the future good Writer.

Hi,Emily! I Think the same about the book. Here in Italy are waiting for september 21 to read Finders Keepers (Chi perde paga/ Loser pays) Can you write me the meaning of "finders keepers" in a few words please?

Good review. I love your dress you are so cute. My wife would like it to... Where did you pick it up?

I didn't think it was really action packed
Are all those books yours or are you at a library?
They are all mine. I've had 20 odd years to acquire them though :P
Emily Cait
That's quite an impressive collection. I've never seen anyone who owns that many books. You must read like a thousand books a year.
One of the many perks of being an English major is that I get to spend pretty much every day of my life reading :)
Give me spolier pl0x
great video !
am a fucking beasr in the crawlind theme
Beep, beep, Richie
Love it read it 5 time's
This girl is BAE... good review also!!
I like ur voice... 🤷
I thought Mr. Mercedes was great, but I didn't like the next two books in the series :(
Hahaha, it's not a review. You just spoil the whole book, wtf girl?
Plz do pet cemetery
I'd really like to reread Pet Semetary at some point. I'd definitely do a review for it then :)
een echt vakantie leesboek
The book was great so does the TV series
great video. ur beautiful.
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it! :)
Boring and too long. Unrealistic cookie cutter Hollywood cliche characters. Definitely not re-readable material.
The book is a cringe fest. Like seriously. The fedora-wearing cop who won't shut-up. He's the kind of person you see and just instantly hate. The book felt apologetic.
hottie.....
