It seems like stating the obvious to say that M. Latry's playing is masterful in every way. He is truly among the elite superstars in the organ firmament. The recording itself is astonishingly good; even compressed on UA-cam, it sounds terrific. Many thanks!
The melody of "Carillon de Westminster" reminds me of my secondary school's beginning bells. "Feux follets" sounds quite modern. "Clair de lune" makes me feel as if I were standing in the midst of blue and transparent moonlight. But "Finale" makes me feel some kind of unrest which may lead to the catastrophic end.
Beautiful tempo in the Carillon de Westminster! Most people play it too fast. It is a lyrical piece, not a virtuoso as - fast - as - you -can composition! Thank you, Olivier Latry!
JRorgel It's undeniably fun at the concert, but in the end a listen-once blast of hot air compared to through-composed pieces like the Vierne. Few other players could attempt such feats of virtuosity, but is it actually worth the work required?
Hello David, This organ used to be in Amsterdam in the 1930s. It was moved to Haarlem in 1971. In Amsterdam the organist was Jan Nieland. Hendrik Andriessen was organist at St Joseph's church, which has a much smaller instrument by the same builder. Hope that helps ;)
Filming comment: It is irritating to have the camera on the right side of Latry filming the arm of the page turner which obscures the entire keyboard at that point. The camera shot at the point of the page turning should have been from the left side or the above shot. This is a mistake I see replicated in many organ videos and could be eliminated with a bit of artistic judgement.
Dear Oliver, you need to listen to this work from out in the room or even out side the church. The swell pedal is not meant for the great organ but the pedal... regardless of what the composition you may see before you now says. It's bong, bong in the base. The dynamics are in the ear... not on the page. Thanks... and love you. I know the worst place to hear an organ is being seated at the organ. Listen... from the back end of the church. Really. You're missing the spirit of intension. Bong, bong. CVD
Masterfully played. After being at Notre Dame all these years, perhaps the spirit of Verne comes through you as the Medium.Bravo!
Vierne...
There may be some truth to that. Being in the position of a former artist can influence one's own artistic prowess.

Wow. What a masterpiece! I got to hear him play in St. Paul, MN. Meant the world to me.
Wonderful performance! Hope to hear him play live some day.

@pproust Yes. I love watching "Danse Macabre." His bow at the end!
At 21:40...
Satan: I'm the Devil, I know metal!
Oliver Latry: Hold my beer.

Dear Francesco, you are completely right about John Smith !
Those beautiful hands, working their magic.
Magnificent performance of the Carillon. Nice snarly pedal. I love how dog-eared the sheet music is!
Most of it is really memorized...

What cameras were used in this video?
Il pubblico numeroso ascolta Oliver Latry
che ha studiato organo con Gastone Litaize a Parigi.
Is this the church where Hendrik Andriessen was organist in the 1930s?

Yes it does. Many thanks for taking the trouble to reply :)
