Tokugawa Yoshimune, the 8th shogun, or ""Abarenbo Shogun,"" was the supreme power of the Edo Bakuhu. Yoshimune, highly respected as a great lord, ventures out into the city and beats the bad guys under the name of Tokuda Shinnosuke, a young samurai.
This is a familiar entertaining historical drama! It is the memorable first series of ""Abarenbo Shogun,"" the masterpiece of popular star Mastuken, Matsudaira Ken. Yoshimune's personality is depicted through the relationship between him and Shinnosuke and the home drama with the people surrounding the ""Megumi"" firemen. The unique plot that the Shogun himself defeats evil made the series extremely popular, which has remained its popularity for over 20 years. Shigeru Amachi also plays the role of a doctor at the Koishikawa Yoseiyojo, adding stability to the series. The first series is full of valuable episodes depicting how Yoshimune assumed the position of Shogun and how he met Megumi's Tatsugoro and Ooka Echizen. ""Yonokaowowasuretaka!"" ""Seibai!"" When will Yoshimune's signature phrases appear!?

What has gotten me confounded thru out this series, and make no mistake it's a wonderful show, is that every time Yoshimune confronts the villains at the usual spot and time frame of the film, he's never accompanied in battle by a large or medium sized entourage of warriors. There's always only Osono and Hanzo, which is counter-typical of a real life Shogun. In fact at the least, I was hoping and expecting a reasonable number of maybe 6 Oniwaban (or Samurais) in total, to confront the enemies which are always often, more in number due to the size of their "koku". Whether it's done to convey Yoshimune's alleged prowess in Katana fighting, or to depict his and Osono's and Hanzo's remarkable fighting skills, it defeats the premise that he is a Shogun whose might and command of many warriors should cause many to tremble before him. Instead, I always get the feeling and awkward impression that Asahi TV is cutting on costs or simply doesn't have a budget for a large battle contingency, which as a result, comes out ''cheap'' and definitely suited only for TV.
The other nagging thought I have is that Asahi TV is probably terribly short on "samurai" actors. Maybe during the show's time span on TV, there aren't many ''warrior/samurai/oniwaban'' actors around Japan at that time because I keep seeing the same faces playing either a ronin, a member of the samurai force, a villain, a merchant, a yakunin, etc..
It really would have been more glorious to see Yoshimune accompanied in these katana fights by even a small group of able warriors behind him. Even having Minamimachi Bugyo Ooka ALWAYS alongside Yoshimune would be satisfying. The other cast members are so under-utilized.
But anyway and just the same, I always enjoy watching the show, and I have come to appreciate and understand Matsu Ken's katana style of fighting. It helps that he towers most of the opponents in size and height, but the way he swings his sword can be dangerously injurious or fatal. Very entertaining show.
