    You know how you looked at those 30 year old people when you were young and thought they were so old? I love that you said you don't want to be in your 50's and look back. I'm both jealous and so happy for you both. 50 comes fast but I don't feel a day over 30. The projects just get bigger and more expensive. No regrets. Stumbled onto your videos because I was starting a cabin build, excavating a 6 acre pond myself, and doing pretty much all the same things. Corporate life will take as much as it can from you without remorse so you have to remain in control. The value these videos provide is that you find the best of the options, explain what won't work, and motivate more than you know. You've made it if you own a tractor and have a place to use it. Enjoy the ride!

      Thank you for this thoughtful comment! We second the bigger and more expensive projects 😂 a 6 acre pond is nearing a lake, that is a huge project!

    Fully understand the "What If", but very glad I've spent 30 years in the military. I'm 55 and looking at retirement in the next 18 months. Having an income stream (retirement) while we build our Homestead from nothing. Taking a week of leave to get three shipping containers dropped to build my workshop build, hoping to get a video out next week.

    Yeah now being disabled at 55, I wish we would have done this some 35 years ago! Alex you’re so well spoken, to me it seems like a perfect fit for you would be delivering the tv news to an audience. Great job you both are doing

    We are in Pennsylvania as well and we have similar goals, we think you made the right choice!! everything you said in this video resonated with us, all we do is work on projects haha.
    hopefully one day we can also quit our day jobs. We are investing in real estate, and we hope to one day buy land and create a campground with a farm to table restaraunt on it (or something like that lol)
    Thanks for all the helpful videos

    Wow, what an interesting life choice. I stumbled across your page while researching Hardie Siding /Zip sheathing project I'm starting. I'm also an Engineer, stayed in the corporate world for about 25 years. So, I am at the 50 yr old mark. Always considered my degree and job my security blanket that I never would consider leaving intentionally. I admire what you both are doing. I'm also a believer that quality time >> money. Good luck on your venture, I'll be happy to follow your page.

    It's incredible you made the time to do the UA-cam, IG, etc on top of designing and building the house on TOP of 9-5 jobs until now. I do just the latter and dream of building a house and struggle to find time for much else...

    • @MasonDixonAcres
      @MasonDixonAcres  Рік тому

      We definitely had some long days balancing it all but we knew what the end goal was and all of the hard work was totally worth it!
      One thing that helped us was accepting that the 9-5 wasn't our end goal and being okay with "meeting expectations" rather than "exceeding expectations." You can probably tell that we are both go above and beyond typically but doing this allowed us to free up mental space to focus on the things we were truly passionate about.

Hope to reach your level in the future !

      Thanks so much, we just watched a few of your videos (with english subtitles of course)! Very cool project you have going on. I can see why everyone in Europe gives Americans grief on using wood to build houses when every bit of a European house is some type of masonry. I think it's more a function of the available resources - to build your same house where we are would be probably 8x the cost, and the masons to do it to that level are practically nonexistant. Keep in touch!

    Something that’s never addressed by homesteading influencers is insurance. Doing some rough calculations, it seems insurance (health, dental, car, home, etc) would be the biggest expense by far. Could you guys make a video addressing this as well as how you are minimizing other life expenses in general?
