Farquad is short and dislikes fairy tale creatures because his mom is the Princess from Princess and the Pea (died during her fairy tale) and his dad is the dwarf Grumpy.
There is a fan theory that the dragon is actually a princess who was turned into a dragon by a curse and that's why she's unable to speak like the other fairytale creatures. It makes sense because even the trees are able to speak. So her curse prevents the dragon from finding a soulmate which also explains why she fell for donkey because that was the only other animal creature she saw that could speak. 🌻
Honestly the gingerbread man interrogation still gets me to this day lol so good

Thanx, Jax, I was needing something more lighthearted this morning. When watching this we would see which of us knew the most fairytale characters from our youth, (yes, I'm old). At 5'3", I would get teased when dating taller women, which I played up to make funnier. Have you seen Disney's "Robin Hood" with the animal characters?
Check out the Austin Powers trilogy with Mike Myers(Voice of Shrek) - Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery(1997), Austin Powers: The Spy WHO Shagged Me(1999), and Austin Powers in Goldmember(2002).
Also, check out these Eddie Murphy(Voice of Donkey) movies - Coming to America(1988), Norbit(2007), The Nutty Professor(1996), and Nutty Professor ll: The Klumps(2000).

As others have said, this was Dreamworks and Katzenberg's getting back at Michael Eisner and Disney. The Farquaad character is a direct "attack" on Eisner, and if you say the character name properly, it sounds just like ... well, just say it. Two words, the second one being "wad." Regardless of the justified attack on Eisner, it is a brilliant film, as you simply must watch the series of sequels. They are all excellent. Always fun to enjoy again, with you.
The movie was brilliant! About the first scene with the Gingerbread Man, when he asks "Do you know the Muffin Man?" That of course is an old children's song, and they bounced the lyrics back and forth with hilarious results. John Lithgow (Lord Farquaad) is a great actor, especially when it comes to comedy. If you aren't familiar with this work, I highly recommend you check out episodes of a TV show(from 1996-2001) called "3rd Rock from the Sun".
I loved that show as a teen!
What a fantastic premise used to satirize human society!
John Lithgow is amazing. Was great seeing him in Rise of Planet of the Apes. :)

EDIT: Parfait is a cake dish... often served in a glass.... but it is technically a cake lol so there can be no winner or loser in the Cake vs Parfait debate.
This movie does Beauty and the Beast better than Beauty and the Beast. She doesn't get a dream pretty boy after falling in love, she learns self-acceptance. And she's not the only one not physically attracted to the other, Shrek also falls in love with her while not being attracted to her conventionally beautiful form.
It's funny how this movie was considered a punishment in Dreamworks, a project set to faul that animators were sent to if they were reprimanded while they put their all into Prince of Egypt. But they incidentally put everyone with a genuine passion to work on this movie and they strived to make it as good as possibke, and now it's more iconic than Prince of Egypt.
One detail a lot of people miss, Shrek was so lonely at the beginning he didn't even have a name, he made it up as soon as Donkey asked because he never really thought about it before.
Is that bit about Shrek's name from the books, or a personal headcanon that you're trying to make popular?

.. In Sweden people can drink at a bar (SOME bars) from 18, but you can't buy alcohol home until you are 20 years old.. You saying that shrek is more than two decades made me think "WOW!.. it's legally allowed to drink,, and COULD have a full university education,",, That kind of shows how old I am getting. Things I think of as "kind of new." REALLY are.. "established" and probably even "old".. The fact that I measure in alcohol units probably say something about me too.. (I guess it's better than if I were to say "Wow, it's FULLY legal, no barely in sight").. but joke aside.. I am contemplating whether I should start looking when any and every movie I know of and love "turns 20" so I can watch it on their biirth-day so we can get drunk together.

"Sweetheart, No! Cake is the most delicious thing on the planet." Uh, you aren't having the right parfait, cobbler or (insert amazing tasty thing here). An amazing cobbler = > cake.
The best two desserts are rhubarb pie and panacotta in no particular order, thirdly is the Swedish chokladbiskvi which loosely translated means Chocolate Buttercream Macaroons. You put them in the fridge and eat them cold. The best cake is Swedish pancake cake with blueberry jam.
Watch the first two movies and then watch the Shrek Christmas special, it's pretty good, better than Shrek 3
The fact that it took me so long to realize that the donkey was a bard is a bit embarrassing. Instead of slaying the dragon, he was laying the dragon.
trivia : princess was locked in a tower and there was a human cook book how she survive that long and all the skeleton laying around

In the outro, she mentions that she was 11 years old when it came out. Assuming that is true, I think in the intro her brain skipped a bit and she conflated the release year and her age at the time of its release.

Honestly Shrek 1&2, then Puss in boots 1&2 are great. Both sequels are even better than their originals.

Also, while not owning anything in the appropriate shade, you tried to dress in green...........um, that would be his skin, ya know. That's kind of a bit 'Silence of the Lambs', I'm thinkin'........ his outfit is a white shirt, a brown vest and trousers (tights). As for the choice, I'd have to opt for cake...... I make a mean NY vanilla cheesecake, smothered in a huckleberry compote (I may have gained 3 pounds saying that).
"Some of you may die, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make" became a massive meme when COVID first started wreaking havoc, and the powers that be decided that "getting back to normal" was better for business than protecting lives.

I know the shrek feeling. I’m a big American dude with a long beard and many tattoos. Just picture a typical old school biker. When I moved to Vietnam almost 9 years ago, people looked at me like I was an alien. I’ve been in the same apartment complex now for about 4 years. At first, many of the kids and old ladies looked like they were scared when I walked by or was on the elevator with them. Now, they all smile and wave. I’ve been a part of the early morning work out group with the local grandmas almost every morning at 5am. Many mornings now, they give me containers of Vietnamese food leftovers from what they cooked the night before. They’ve accepted me now, and I absolutely love being here. I’ve lived in 5 different countries, visited over 40, and this is my favorite place, just barely above Mexico😜🤘🍻
Chris Farley was orginally supposed to be Shrek and there used to be some of his voice lines here on UA-cam.
Also, you need to watch Mystery Men and Rat Race if you want to complete the Smash Mouth All Star trilogy. Mystery Men is actually the basis for their music video.
Yesss, the Shrek movies are great movies and they're all very good in their own right. I think first one or second one are the best, but the whole series is really great. There's also some Christmas specials that were made called "Shrek the Halls" - you should definitely check that out. (Might be only one special, can't remember exactly). But you've got three more movies to go before then. :)
And a few of the side characters DO come back in future movies. They get more speaking roles which is awesome. I think you'll love seeing them doing their thing. :)
(Also, not sure if you picked up on it, but Lord Faquad's name is actually a play on a swear word, so it cracks me up EVERY time I watch Shrek now. It's a play on F***wad, in case you wanted to know. A movie for all ages but it's one of the fun adult jokes in there.)
But yeh, the next one is so great too.... there's more fun characters and situations to see along the way. So fun. :)

You have to watch Shrek 2 to meet "Puss and Boots". BTW in the west all of the princesses are waiting for their prince charming not realizing that we are at least partially ogres. Glad you had so much fun with this one. This is really not a kids movie. Right?

What I am learning from this is that Jax is a lot younger than I thought she was. "A little kid" when it came out? I'm so old....
I remember when Shrek came out in the cinemas, parents had so much more fun than their kids watching that movie, mostly because kids didn't get a lot of the jokes and references to other movies (like Matrix scene). Shrek was made more for adults than the kids. It's a little sad that they don't do movies like this anymore.

I'm not sure if Jax will see this comment but, would you be willing to watch an anime movie? I feel like you would appreciate an anime movie and one of the franchise l love is Dragon Ball...perhaps you can watch Dragon Ball: Path to Power?! It's a brief origins movie from the actual main series and l think you'll love it!!
During the Gingerbread Man interrogation (9:04), they're doing the "Muffin Man" traditional nursery rhyme.
Agent Schreck in "Final Destination" and Max Schreck in "Batman Returns" were named after the actor who played the original Nosferatu in 1929. Used to be a little filmmaker reference because nobody else knew the name. Now nobody makes that reference any more because it instantly evokes a famous ogre - even though this Shrek's name is not after the actor, but from a yiddish word meaning "frightful".

With the lead singer for smash mounth passing away earlier this year this makes sense the soundtrack helped make this movie ❤❤ remember getting this when it first came out on VHS went to see sequels

In the scene where the magical creatures invade Shrek's house you can see Papa Bear and Son Bear together looking sad. In Lord Farquad's palace, the mother bear is used as a rug. Sad detail to note.
Yes, cake is better than parfait. Good chocolate layer cake with nuts.
This is a bit of a horror movie if you catch some of the subtle things. Like in the swamp you see the baby bear being comforted by the father but the mom isn't around. Then in the scene where Farquad is in bed there is a bearskin rug on the floor with a bow on it. I'm sure you can get the allusion from that context. Just some subtle stuff like that you start to catch when you watch a movie many times.

It's a desert made of layers. One of the most common iterations is made of alternating layers of fruit and whipped cream, but it can also be layers of different flavors of pudding, crumbles cookie bits, candy, etc. If you do a Google Image search for the word, you'll probably say "oh yeah, I know what that is" when you see the results.

I saw this in the cinema when it came out....we had never seen something like this in terms of jokes or synchro..that movie was pretty revolutionary because it was so different to Toy Story for example..and that was a direct result of them wanting to do something different because it was a direct attack on Disney and or Pixar for personal reasons of Jeff Katzenberg. I can remember it as if it was yesterday that I sat in the cinema with my friend...time is a bi**** man Im telling ya
