  • This film is based on a presentation at Exeter Museum in Devon on October 1st, 2022 by the photographer Chris Chapman as part of a Beaford Arts symposium, ‘The Art of Documentary Photography in Devon’. It tells the story of the friendship between James Ravilious and Chris Chapman and reveals their mutual love of the Devon countryside and its people.
James Ravilious died in 1999 and 2022 marked the 50th anniversary of both photographers beginning their documentary projects in Devon. To celebrate this an anniversary group was formed consisting of Simon Timms, one-time head of culture at Devon County Council, Mark Haworth- Booth, former curator of photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Simon Standing, Associate Professor of Photography at Plymouth University, Dr. Richard Westcott, a retired GP from South Molton, Devon and close friend of James, and James’s daughter, Ella Ravilious.
A new book, ‘A Photographic Friendship, James Ravilious and Chris Chapman’ designed by Simon Standing and compiled by the group, with a foreword by Michael Morpurgo, was published in late October 2022. Details can be found at the end of the film.

I've loved James' pictures from the first moment I saw them. So many beautiful, perfectly judged images.

Some years ago I watched a news report about James and I was immediately drawn to his locality and photography. I have his book Down the Deep Lanes and the images have inspired me greatly. It is a little disappointing that there is very little on You Tube of this great photographer.

A lovely film about two of my favourite photographers, one I'm lucky enough to know a little, and the other I sadly never met.
