- Despite a raft of sanctions against Russia, especially its lucrative fossil fuel sector, the European Union is still paying billions to that country for energy. Legal loopholes are allowing barrel after barrel of oil into the bloc, even as Brussels sends aid money to Ukraine. Are more sanctions necessary?

These are the people lecturing India for buying Russian oil. Funny thing is they are acting like its a Russia's fault for selling them oil. Its your money, keep it in your pocket
India increased their purchases 10x since the beginning of the war whereas Europe tries to decrease it as much as possible. In other words India sees this war as an opportunity to make money whereas Europe tries to stop it.

@@alvinjunior4595 There are some countries who can't. I mention Austria as an example. They receive 25% of energy in form of Russian oil. They are landlocked, they can't ship liquid gas to their shores. Therefore, a transition will take much longer, for example.
There are a (few) other countries which are friendly with Pootyn, such as Hungary. We can wish that these activities would be stopped, but we can't control Hungary. However, the voices are getting louder to kick them out of EU.

@Kennon959 there are 98 identified SMR technologies still undergoing development around the world. Some of these designs are still moving towards licensing, operation, and commercialisation. Both russia and china have active smr's they take 3-5 years to build. As for renewable energy and storage, just look at last 10 years.

Over the past two years, gas from Russia to Europe via pipelines in Ukraine has continued to work as normal. I don't believe there is a Russian loophole, but rather an energy backdoor created by the Europeans themselves.
True, those pipelines though might be cut off in December after the current Gazprom contract expires. Once that happens the amount Russia can export will decline significantly

The west currently rules the world so it can create whatever law it wants. Rules and laws are for the rest not to the west . The joke called the rules based world order.

Only the US controlled governments imposed sanctions on Russia. None of the Arab, Latin American or African countries didn't impose sanctions. Almost no Asian countries didn't follow US policy towards Russia. Why do EU countries not import cheap fuel and gas from the US and Canada?

Eventually Putin would sell the extra oil and gas, because they are not extra. The demand remains the same just Europe would buy their oil, gas from elsewhere and Russia can sell its oil and gas elswhere. Probably the prices, cost and profit would change a bit, or more than a bit.

Revenue isn't Profit. russo oil is discounted precisely because of sanctions so even with the ongoing sales, PROFIT is still a lot less than before 2022. So obviously sanctions are working.
