When you force your own people to fight in a war they don't believe in by forced conscription, then you become a dictator. Dictators not supported by their people tend to get violent resistance from time to time, like how the assailant attacked a recruitment office was out of frustration more than a Russian spy
You do realize that Ukraine is a long way away from being deemed a democracy by generally accepted benchmarks, right?

If it were other countries, human rights activists, fundamental rights advocates, Internatinalaw and UN institutions would be crying out, but whatever Ukraine and Israel do is overlooked because the U.S. has vested interests in their conflicts. What basis does the rest of the world have to trust human rights, press freedom, ICC and the UN? What is their justification for existing on this Earth?"

Ive been of the opinion that Russia will be chasing a border running along the Dnieper river to Dnipro, then north east towards Kharkiv as a new border… not quite as much area, but seemingly very achievable, unless Zelensky accepts the obvious and cedes the areas currently occupied by Russia, to prevent further losses of life and land.
