    Thank you Ben for grading my mother’s coins. We discussed they didn’t have much monetary value, but these coins lived in change purse in my mom’s dresser. As a kid I would take them out and play with them. It was my mom who gave me my first Morgan that had a hole through it, which got me into coin collecting.

    That '84 Morgan is beautiful. I think the graders didn't have their coffee yet when they graded that one. It deserves more love than just an MS 63.

    Hi Ben, I actually just took in a few coins to your shop earlier this month to get graded. One was a $2.50 gold indian which was my very first gold piece i got in the 1990's, a 1891 cc morgan, and a 2020 WWII privy eagle. Thanks for offering the service.

    Thanks for the lesson Ben. Yeah that was a PL Morgan.

    The $5 definitely looked like an AU-58; got a break there as the fields looked like atypical AU fields in other gold coins. Nice coins!

    The 1884 CC deserves some kind of notation. Why they didn't give that at least a star is beyond me. I have no idea if you'll see this Ben, but I am curious; are you finding that the major grading companies (especially NGC and PCGS) are handing out fewer PL and DMPL/DPL designations in your experience?

    Just learning about die polish lines. It seems an important thing to know especially on a graded coin. Why do they not note that on a slab label? I bought a grased coin...that looked scratched to me, but on further review it was die polish. Would have been nice to nust see it on the slab. I'm a green newbie so please tell me how stupid i am.

    Scenario: Suppose around 97 years ago, a customer walks into a general store to buy sundries with a 1925 Peace dollar. The customer takes the Peace dollar and slides it across the sales counter to pay and causes surface abrasion lines. There are only a small handful of lines and are only on a small part of one side. Fast forward to 2024 and someone sends that same Peace dollar off to a TPGC and gets it back "Details Cleaned" because of those lines.
    Question: Why would lines from commerce be called "Details Cleaned"?

    • @dr.osborne7510
      @dr.osborne7510 Місяць тому

      I don't think those lines would look like cleaning lines. Not an expert, but cleaning lines seem to be lines in the field. Sliding a Peace dollar across a counter would at worst make lines on the design, but not in the fields. Said dollar would be certified about uncirculated. Cleaning seems to require special care to modify the look of the fields. If you do that after the coin is struck, then the lines will with just be in the fields and unable to get all the way to the devices or pass over the devices and go back into the fields like the scratch Ben talks about here. Die polish lines are on the die, so they will be raised and 'behind' the devices. They'll be on both sides of the devices, but not impact them at all.

    Staples should not be anywhere around coins. Cardboard flips are convenient but dang can they destroy a coin. If you're going to use them always press down the staple legs with something hard, flatten them as best you can. Clear flips are a better option but do cost a bit more.

    We see in movies cowboys bite a coin to see if it real gold. Is that true and have you ever seen a gold coin with bite marks?

    Who are these people opening stapled flips in a way that allows the staple to scratch the coin? It's much easier to take a fine razor knife and cut around the mylar to free the coin...

      @@TheCoinGeekplease give a tutorial about using flat clinch staplers vs regular staplers that leave raised metal that can and will scratch other coins when shipped together, see this a lot in the hobby, argh, I went to flat staplers 30 years ago!

      Who are these people putting coins in flips and then using steel staples to seal it? Should be a felonious misdemeanor.
