Thanks for getting me digging into all the things I can do with Beads! I decided that if I'm going to start with modular, I'm going to start with something that I absolutely cannot get any other way. So I'm going to start with a very small system built around Beads and the Imaginary Friend from Error Instruments. I've also got a Minibrute 2S, so I should be able to connect up more traditional elements as needed.
Wow, I find it super cool you're starting with Imaginary Friend. But if you can find one and have the budget for it, I'd recommend getting instruo Arbhar instead of Beads. Trust me.
@@CinematicLaboratory Can Arbhar do stream processing on live external sources? A big part of what I'm thinking about is having options in shaping the sound of the Imaginary Friend as I play it. Because yeah, Arbhar looks fantastic.
@@g1rlchild Yes, but it's more serious with onset detection and synced capture. Beads has a 10 sec buffer, Arbhar has six which are stored in memory. I use it a lot with Error's cloud busting. Arbhar is just made for live performances and it sounds beautiful. I suggest watching the big instruo video that covers all features.
@@CinematicLaboratory I watched the video, and you're right -- this is totally what I want. Also, the size change left me rethinking my case plans a little bit and I don't want to depend on the Arbhar's reverb, so I found space for a Desmodus. My budget isn't very happy with this change, but I'm obviously really excited to explore both the Arbhar and the Desmodus. Thanks for the advice!
Wow, I really love the sounds this makes! I guess I'm still too married, even as someone who's been labeled a "noise musician" at times, to the idea of falling back on more traditional rhythms and structures. I love how far out of a western tonal comfort zone this seems, yet how undeniably musical it sounds. The atmosphere is so palpable, I like how it seems a little more "smeared" than other granular units I've heard, a little less bitcrushed and more painterly, if that makes any sense.
I feel like people would have an easier time with beads if it had a wavetable function that refused to be a normal VCO. That is, the dry wet knob should instead do something granular related. I love the wavetable mode because it makes grains from wavetables. I find the simple drone to be a nuisance.
@1:03 _"They (Mutable instruments modules) may become collectors items"_ *** That's an interesting thought. I've never heard of modules that would be collectible. Do we have any examples yet (not MI)?
MakeNoise QMMG (!), MMG, Mysteron, FxDF, LxD just to name a few. Cwejman modules became priceless. However, I deliberately wrote 'may'. We can't be sure. But what's 100% sure is that MI originals will never be in stock again. I got myself a second Veils 2020 a few weeks ago (last batch ever).
@@CinematicLaboratory I did a quick google check on these modules and indeed, they are an object of desire. I wish I had bought the original Rings a few months ago. I rather disliked the sound of it as a resonator, but I recently discovered a virtual version in the VCV Rack and FM Voice mode. That's something interesting...
Robert the only module I’ve got here is Lapsis Os so long way to catch up but feeling Pizza may be one I will get Another great Vibe of your dedication to modular Excellenti 🆒🎶🎶🎶👍🌟🌟🌟
This is really cool! When it's available, will you try out the West Pest too? It's rack-mountable and if it's good, it seems like it could also be a good entry point into similar territory. You'd need a second oscillator to do FM, but it seems like it has interesting possibilities.
I don't think so. This channel is not sponsored and I don't see room for it next to my existing 'west-coast gear'. It's an interesting concept, but it may seem to close to the stuff I already have (0-coast, Shared System). But they are super cool and affordable. Real 'west coast' needs a dual oscillator so I'd recommend teaming it up with the East Beast for the best of both coasts.
@@CinematicLaboratory I love the idea of using these two together. Seems perfect for someone with fewer tools, especially for under $500. That said, those Tiptop Buchla modules...
Do you have a Clank Chaos? I'm considering replacing my Pachinko with the Clank (arriving Monday finally after a year wait). Chaos is six channel and less HP. I also may replace my MCO with a Pizza. I have liked every Bastl I get. However Patchworks is ripping people off like crazy, jacking up the price on Pizza. Supply and demand is one thing but really?

You are an awesome guy
Love Beads and Love Clouds. Agree they are totally different and love he internal wave tables with beads.

Lapsus Os 🖤🖤🖤
I found Beads is taking good points of Granular Module of other companies very well.
