Its so beautiful i want to cry
All of his songs have similarities to how his child life was. i am indeed sorry that his life went this way but this song tells you the most about it. His parents did kick him out and Reject him because hes different. But in the most amazing way if he can make music like this.
He also said in the commentary to The Leaves, to this song is so personal, that he doesn't want to play it in front of an audience.
I think the first two family tree albums were about a fictional family but this one was more autobiographical. His step dad kicked him out for being gay, such a horrible thing to have to go through. I can't even imagine the pain. This is why the best art will never come from conservatives and frankly why they don't care about the arts in general. Introspection = bad

The offenders were very conservative parents, guess I can't comment on my lived experience since that would be "politicizing" it. I know this is a long shot, but what does "to be the sharp knife" exactly mean ? Is that an English expression ? (I'm not a Native speaker)
Tetrapharmakon Sharp knife often refers to a person's intelligence. The lyrics are saying 'I wasn't the smartest but I wasn't dumb either.'

Tetrapharmakon I have a slightly different interpretation: when he says "I was never the sharp knife", I believe he means he doesn't have the capacity to cut others down. In other words, he's a gentle soul incapable of consciously hurting others. In this context I think the song hits harder in the final verse because he himself is being cut down (by his parents, just for being who he is). The most he could ever retaliate is by writing and recording this song, which is why I believe he has gone on record saying that he'll never play this song again. It's not in his nature to retaliate, but he just needed some kind of outlet for his frustrations.

I love all of Ben's albums but somehow this one has a lot more songs on it that resonate personally with me, does anyone else feel this way?

I don't really know where to say this but I just wanted to say thank you so much for all the amazing you've made... I think I found your music over 7 years ago but only got to listen to the entire discography several years back, and I haven't been able to stop putting entire albums on loop for weeks on end. Usually that leads me to having entire songs that used to be my favorites be untouchable because I end up associating it with a horrible time in my life, but the the entire Family Tree: The Leaves album still has that touch of wonder and thoughtful, tired sadness it had even on the nth replay and I think it's because it's helped me accept and process everything that was happening. It's helped me remain calm even as 5 meters away, I can hear voices rising as things escalate. These songs make me want to be a better, gentler, kinder person and I don't think I have really said that about anything else.
It's my best song 2016, very very beautiful !!!
