  • If you work with felt or wool or any other natural fibres, you may be wondering how you can dye them without introducing chemicals and difficult processes. Well, look no further than SOLAR DYEING!
    Process:
Pretreat fibre (aka mordant) with alum to make the color stick
Put wet fibres in a sealable glass jar with fresh or dried plant material
Leave in the sun for 2-3 weeks (depending on how much sun your jars get you can go shorter or longer!)
    Rinse out your fibres
Check out the video to see these plants in action:
    Marigold
    Red Clover
    Golden Rod
    Hibiscus
    Purple Loosestrife
    Curly Dock
    Red Hopi Amaranth
    Stinging Nettle
The results may just surprise you...!

Gorgeous! Is alum or an equivalent necessary for the color to hold? Would you be able to use citric acid or vinegar instead do the soak in process have to take place in the sun? I’m just thinking about the winter months in MI haha

The alum isn’t technically necessary, but it will help your colours really sink into the fabric and hold. It also doesn’t need to be in the sun but it’ll take a lot longer! Again the heat just helps the process along!

FUN ! Like all your showing steps. Have any cotton or linen... to experiment on with those dyes? I used to get orangish pink with Dock roots on wool but dont think used alum. Am going to try the sagebrush in yard next that I trim.

I dyed wool with them! Definitely want to try cotton shirts come time. Using alum definitely changes the outcome!
