I've been pondering doing this to my 01 GS 300 just to see if the response gets quicker? Would you suggest replacing fuel regulator as well? I believe it a part of the filter assembly.
It won’t change anything unless your existing pump is shot or starting to go. The regulator is not necessary. Test the pump and see where the resistance is. It takes 10 min.
What symptoms did you have with a bad pump? I have a 99 GS400 that runs rough or dies after a few seconds after startup when its cold (below 32 degrees Fahrenheit). If I press the gas pedal a little right after starting it will clear up after a few seconds and run like normal. I also have a little bit of hesitation from a stop sometimes.
I was actually chasing a lean code (turned out to be my intake - see other episode on that). As outlined in my video, you can test the fuel pump at the plug. Another method is to watch the fuel dampers on the rails. At start up the screws in the middle should go to the up position.

Great video. I have a 2013 GS350 which the gas gauge just recently is reading empty even after filling up the gas tank. Just curious to see if replacing the fuel pump will resolve this issue or could it be the float?
Hello, l have an 08 Lexus IS250. The car has a rough cold start, sometimes it doesn’t even fully turn on anymore. A couple of weeks ago, shooting some starter fluid in the intake will get it to start, but now it doesn’t. When cranking, it has 0 FRP(psi). Does this mean the fuel pump is bad? Looking forward to your response!
I would obtain the FSM from a day pass at Toyota Info Services (TIS), $15? Use diagnostics to troubleshoot. It does sound like there should be pressure during cranking, yes. But I don’t know the 2.5L well. Also, my research indicates this engine has a cold start injector. That could be a culprit too. Report back on what solves it. 👍
@@ForwardMomentum Thanks for the reply! Some things I forgot to mention; before the rough start, my car died randomly while driving out my parking spot. The following day is when I noticed the hard start, and the stalling. Went to check for codes, and it had a pending code that had something to do with the MAF sensor. So I replaced it. And still had a rough start/no start. Had another mechanic check it out; he claimed it was the fuel injection cold start valve. We replaced that as well, and the same issue happened. Now mechanic states “ We should verify it’s 1: spraying 2: got pressure 3:getting electrical signal. I did those tests with the old one, so I should’ve repeated them. Let’s plan another trip and keep playing with it in the meantime. It’s possible the check valve in the low pressure pump is leaking, or maybe not running at all, hence checking for pressure at cold start injector. Any advice?
He should have done steps 1, 2 and 3 before replacing the cold start injector. Anyway, it sounds like he’s just throwing parts at it. You may want to consider having it taken to the LEXUS dealer or a mobile mechanic that specializes in LEXUS to diagnose it. I would hate to throw random parts at it too. FAST is the general rule: Fuel Air Spark Timing. Sorry I can’t be of more assistance. It’s tough to determine what’s up remotely.
Love the step by step video... do you have any link of all parts needs to amazon...? Im driving 08 lexus gs 350, hope all is the same, this will be my next thing to do after spark plugs change. Thank you so much for the tutorial...
Any symptoms of a bad fuel pump or fuel filter to be aware of ? And At what milage did you replace yours ? Do fuel grade impact fuel pump/filter in any way ? Thanks again 🙌🏼
I replaced around 165K miles. Fuel grade should not impact particulate matter (premium isn’t better per se). But you should run what the engine requires (premium). Signs of a bad pump can be long starts, hesitation and the engine stopping for no reason. The check is simple, so I suggest you start with the ohm test and go from there.
That sounds correct. I thought I showed it in my vid? Do a Google search and double check, but that sounds right. You won’t hurt anything with an ohm test. 👍
@@ForwardMomentum yes I seen a guy cut open a hatch to access it. I won't be doing that. I may just have to take it in this time. Thanks for the other videos s that save me trips to the mechanic shop.
I was fighting a P0171 bank one lean issue and after exhausting about every other option, I threw a FP at it. I normally don’t throw parts at scenarios, but I figured it would make for good content anyway. In the end my lean condition was caused by the K&N intake system, which I removed.
Help! My 1998 Lexus GS400 has been an amazing car that I’ve owned for over 15 years. However, it won’t start. No click, good battery, and I’ve had a couple of mobile mechanics take a look. The last one said it’s the fuel pump but I don’t think so. If a pump was bad wouldn’t the car try and at least crank? Question, when your key is in the accessory position does your gear indicator show what gear you’re in? Mine doesn’t and I’m not sure if that’s normal. If that’s not normal behavior then I’m suspecting a neutral safety switch or something similar type of issue not allowing my car to start. It doesn’t start in park or neutral. Check all fuses too
Hi - no, not much lights up in ACC mode. Any recent changes prior to this happening? I see you mention a new battery. Sometimes they can screw with the immobilizer. I’d walk through everything with a multimeter and the FSM. If you need the FSM, you can DL it on the TIS website using a day pass for a small fee.
@@ForwardMomentum thanks for taking the time to reply. No recent changes but what did happen was my car stalled on me while exiting the freeway. Luckily I was able to coast into a parking lot safely. From that point on my car won’t start. Just to be sure I took the battery to get it tested and fully charged but same issue. Before any of this happened the car has been driving fine for the past year. I hesitated to let the mechanic have to car to swap out the fuel pump because I was under the impression the car would at least crank if that was indeed the issue. I tried putting the key in the drivers door and unlocking/ locking several times just to make sure the theft deterrent system wasn’t enabled. Also tried my spare key. It’s almost as if something is preventing the starting system from engaging. I also don’t hear the starter relay clicking when attempting to start. But the car stalling on me on the highway might be a clue as to what may be happening. I’ll look into downloading the FSM thanks for that suggestion!
@@cflivinadream I agree with you that the car will crank with a bad FP. Just for kicks, test it as outlined in my vid. I really don't think that's it. These cars are known for starters going at high mileage, so it's possible the starter is shot. However, I think you're on the right path by checking cheap things first, such as the shifter interlock and NSS. Definitely keep me posted as I certainly don't know everything and I would love to hear where you get with this. Also, CarTuneNZ is a master at the 1UZ. You may want to browse his vids and see if there's anything worth checking. I believe he would even provide some consultation for a fee, but he's in NZ, so the time difference could be intense. LMK!
would this install guide suit is300/is200 cars as well in the years 1999 -2004? If not would the ohms rating be the same values as mentioned in the video when you used a multi meter
@@ForwardMomentum yes, I forgot to mention^ being at 37° Fahrenheit, I don’t know if it had to be 68° as mentioned in the video, thank you for getting back so quick🙏🏽
Any ideas ? I'm thinking pumping it out might be the best way to empty the system completely rather than syphoning through the top of tank. Jumping the fuel relay ?
Well, I probably wouldn’t use the pump itself. With the hanger assembly that method would be difficult. Pulling the entire hanger assembly up and using a separate pump with a hose to get it out is probably the fastest and safest method. The only issue is there are two chambers in there I believe. Accessing the second chamber might be tough if you need to get all the fuel. Another possibility is to puncture the tank and reseal it, but I really hate creating damage if it’s not entirely necessary.
I was thinking on disconnecting the fuel line in the engine compartment and then jumping the relay. Attaching an oversized hose from the fuel line to a Jerry can. Thanks for getting back.
That’s a thought, but that 6AN flare fitting is notorious for being difficult to disconnect. Proceed with caution. Report back on what works for you if you don’t mind. Thanks.
What's up brother i was wondering if I stick a aem 340 pump in that sending unit will it work with that fuel pressure regulator thats in there or will it mess it up and was wondering if there's a fuel pump saver on our gs400 and gs430, because my sc300 has a fuel pump saver and I'm going to bypass it thank you
Good questions. Unfortunately I am not comfortable answering them. I hear that guys are putting Walbro pumps in, but it requires a modified hanger. I have also heard that the Aristo TT pump will work, but the plug has to be modified. Please check on all that. Sorry I don’t have more answers for you.
Going to replace my fuel filter in my GS430... Anyone know the part number for: Fuel Filter to Top Assy. o-ring Fuel Pressure Regulator o-ring cannot find this information anywhere!!!
Good luck. I had the same problem. The Denso and install kit comes with a replacement o-ring. One. So I used it on the pump outlet and just left the existing regulator o-ring back when I did mine. I now run a Walbro 255 so the set up is totally different.

By the way it’s a crank no start
@ForwardMomentum How do you test the fuel pressure on the GS? I have a 300 so I'm not sure if the 400 has the in tank regulator or not like the 300. But there's no Schrader vaIve. Do you have one?
You have to put an inline gauge at the feed line to the rail. You can put it where the damper goes or you can cut the feed line and put a barbed 6AN gauge in the line. Pressure should be about 45psi at idle.
Seeing that your car was basically running ok at first. What difference did you notice after if any? Super Awesome Videos.! Love the Dark 🍒 color. I have similar head light set up on mine. LED 6k headlight lights 6k bulb light yellow halogens. All LED Red taillights.
Awesome! Love yellow in the right places. I didn’t notice any difference. If anything, it’s a maintenance item. Of course the K&N FIPK was the cause of my fuel trim problem, so that could have masked any perceived difference. I immediately went back to the stock intake after the fuel pump job and, of course that made a big difference. In other words, other issues masked any perceived change with the fuel pump job. Hope that makes sense!

That’s insane. It should be cost of parts and reasonable labor hours. That pump is around $400 from a dealer (again, depends on which one it seems) and the job takes about an hour. Assume they bill it for 3hrs at $125/hr. Add in misc parts like gaskets and stuff and that’s how $800 is calculated. $2000 is robbery.

Now mechanic states “ We should verify it’s
1: spraying
2: got pressure
3:getting electrical signal.
I suggest the Fuel Pump Factory for parts. I don’t have AMZ links. Sorry. Thanks for the kind words!
@@ForwardMomentum thank you very much !
Which pins are 4 and 5 ?
There's 3 on top and 2 at the bottom I'm assuming 4 and 5 are the bottom 2?
That sounds correct. I thought I showed it in my vid? Do a Google search and double check, but that sounds right. You won’t hurt anything with an ohm test. 👍
Hi great videos. How about replacing the fuel over flow check valve.
Thanks. I don’t have it on the calendar. I heard that thing is crazy to access under the car.
@@ForwardMomentum yes I seen a guy cut open a hatch to access it. I won't be doing that. I may just have to take it in this time. Thanks for the other videos s that save me trips to the mechanic shop.
Was the part numbers for a Toyota service center ? Or Lexus ? Or do they have same for parts number ? Thanks!
You’ll need to call Lexus. I don’t have it. This site may list it: www.toyodiy.com/parts/
Sorry if I missed it but did you first diagnose you had a fuel pump issue?
Sorry, I don’t know for certain.
@@ForwardMomentumis 2.3 considered a good ohm rating / a good fuel pump?
Did you watch the vid? I cover that in the first 3 minutes.
@@ForwardMomentum yes, I forgot to mention^ being at 37° Fahrenheit, I don’t know if it had to be 68° as mentioned in the video, thank you for getting back so quick🙏🏽
No worries. Ambient temp does play a role. Higher ambient temp = higher value. That being said, your value is within range. 👍
Does the service tell you what pins to test?
The FSM? Yes.
That was a really really good video. Very helpful thanks again bro
Great vid, good detail. Tackling mine tm
Do you have a video on how to drain the gas tank by using the fuel pump ?
I do not. Sorry.
Do you know the part numbers for the o-rings or what size they need to be ?
No. It came with the kit. Sorry.
@@ForwardMomentum thanks for responding . I’m going crazy trying to find them
I understand. It’s super annoying!
Besides Amazon, where can I purchase authentic Denso parts? Thank you.
You have to be very cautious buying anywhere these days. Denso direct, RockAuto, EBay are other options.
Going to replace my fuel filter in my GS430... Anyone know the part number for:
Fuel Filter to Top Assy. o-ring
Fuel Pressure Regulator o-ring
cannot find this information anywhere!!!
Good luck. I had the same problem. The Denso and install kit comes with a replacement o-ring. One. So I used it on the pump outlet and just left the existing regulator o-ring back when I did mine. I now run a Walbro 255 so the set up is totally different.
@@ForwardMomentum probably will try my luck and order some Orings that look like they will fit and see how that goes then! Thanks!
What if I test the ohms and they read zero but when I put Power to the pump it runs
That’s weird. No idea.
@@ForwardMomentum I just checked the IG2 relay and get no OHMS reading so just ordered one.
New intro is dope, though its weird that the aspect ratio isnt filling out my 16:9 monitor, instead just ugly black bars left and right, though i imagine its more cinematic on a regular monitor
Thanks. I’ll fix the spect ratio next vid. I edited in 16:9 instead of 4:3. That was my mistake. It literally would have taken me 6hrs to fix all the clips. Doh!
Do you know if the procedure is the same in a Aristo? I think the pumps and connectors are different? Great video, as always :)
Thanks! I believe you’re correct; some differences if an Aristo TT. The basics of the procedure should carry over though.

Love your videos how can you check fuel pressure on 1999gs 300 thank you
Thanks! I am not aware of an easy way. I think an in-line gauge has to be placed on the rail near the fuel pulsation damper/banjo.
Ok I understand I got these problem on this 1999 gs 300 it ran good it suddenly stall on me couple of days ago I kept using and it did it again now it whant start I replace the fuel pump I check for spark and injectors pulse and the are good and when I spray carb cleaner the throttle body it will run …. Can't even find the Denso pump no more. I started to buy one 3 years ago now they're discontinued
Yeah it’s out of stock everywhere. Totally sucks!
@ForwardMomentum Cutting? No! Lol. But ok thanks for the quick response. You're the man!
@ForwardMomentum Get a GS300 and work on it, so I can ask more questions lol.
Just curious! Did you check ohm value with new pump?
Yes, just didn’t film it.
it's helped a lot! thanks
Where did u found the instructions. At part 11:45, I’m trying to found that

great video and helpful but I changed mine and a code appeared P0125 insufficient coolant temperature in a closed loop fuel control

Very strange. Here’s what another gentleman found: “A/F Heater Fuse was misplaced inside the fuse box. Mechanics accidentally put it in "spare" slot.“

@@ForwardMomentum searched all morning for your Facebook 🤣 thanks tho I got it blue is power black is ground
3:43 What dealer quoted you $800? The going rate here in Denver is $2,000.
@@ForwardMomentum thanks for the quick reply. After researching this more I think the high estimate is for replacement of the high pressure fuel pump in the engine bay. Problem is, I'm not sure which of my pumps is going bad I want to check the pressure before I take it to the mechanic, but I can't find the pressure test port on the fuel rail. Did you have to replace the high pressure pump on your lexus?
@@csn6234 no. I’m not even aware of a high pressure pump. There are dampeners on the fuel rails, but aside from that it’s just the in-tank unit. That unit has the FPR as part of it. What model do you have?

How hard is it to replace the sending unit? Is it just plugged in?
Can you clarify your question?
@ForwardMomentum the float or sending unit sensor is that just plugged into the fuel pump housing? My gas gauge level on the dash is not reading correctly I figured it may be the sending unit.
Gotcha. I haven’t replaced that, but it looks pretty easy. I had an issue with mine being stuck at half tank and I used sensor-safe cleaner on a Q-tip and carefully cleaned all the sending unit contacts and it fixed the issue. Perhaps consider that first?
