I know this is an old post but it was very helpful. The coolest thing is, you can also use that exported VM and import it multiple times to create multiple working copies.
Thanks for this :)
My pleasure!
clear as crystal
Nice one, thanks. Amazing technology...
Clear and simple :) Thanks
You're welcome!
easier than that, is just to copy the hard drive file .vhdx, then create a new VM that uses this Hard drive file .. But still Thank you for the nice video
thank you from Guadeloupe (French West Indies)
well explained video... thanks
You are welcome, Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
Very nice video. Thank you!
You are welcome. Thanks for watching!
+Chris Held You are welcome and thanks for watching!
Thank's bro.
ohh !! WOW its helpful for the beginners, but what if directly copy and paste the folder which contains the running VM from the default location ?
If you want to run the same VM in two different hosts (a laptop and a PC for example), is it necessary to create 2 virtual machines? Do I have to double the space in disk (im using an external SSD to be able to connect and launch those VM from work and home).
Thank U very much!
You are welcome, Thanks for watching!
Nice well explained video, thanks :)
+Ch Ada Thanks!
Thanks. I tried importing directly (omitting the 'export' step) and it worked also. I am using Windows 10 Creators Update.
You are welcome. Glad to hear that it worked for you.
nice
Does this still apply with Windows 11 and its version of Hyper-V or is there a way to clone a Hyper V and basically do it faster? I read something about "WAC" but I don't have a clear picture of what that is or what it does.
👍👍
Thanks I like your direct and simple instructions. I am looking for a way to expand my disk space of a VM on 2012 R2 disk manager export option is grayed out? any ideas?
You need to first turn off your virtual machine and then it will be available you to expand - once done you may need to go to disk manager and claim that space after right clicking on (usually in black color area) to see available space on your actual disk.
Is this any different than copying the VHDX file, creating a new VM, and attaching the copied VHDX file?
Hi! What's the specs of your Computer?
Hi, Is there any issue if I delete the exported folder on your desktop? once imported.
You have to make sure that your machine isn’t pointing to any file in your exported folder. Did you give different path to your cloned machine than your exported folder? If so you can delete it - also to be on safe side, leave the new machine running while deleting coz it will give you error of file being in use if it is tied to your new machine.
Understand Sir, Thanks alot!
When you rename the virtual machine on Hyper-V does it also rename it inside? I'm asking this because you may run into problems having 2 machines with the same name (since you didn't shut down the original while making the copy).
Answer is NO. But it is smallest problem. Both VMs have same SID, same MAC etc. So u have to chage them manually.
@@g06pblueex you may use sysprep
@@aqasuncion Stunning that Microsoft hasn't automated that entire process like VMWare has.
Just want to verify.... Once I import the VM, I will need to go in and rename the computer and give it a new IP address. What else will I need to do after that? Thank you. And thank you for the video. Very helpful.
+Kevin Bailey you would need to change SID of the server/machine as well. There is video I have done which shows how to do that.
After that it will be an independent machine.
use sysprep
Hello. where can i download the software
i did the exact same thing and it doesnt workf or me
This does not work from one PC to another. it works on the same PC.

I think if you use samba share it my work :D
I replaced my damaged motherboard (that is like another PC). Then reinstalled Windows 10 (creators update, v1703) and imported (reregistered) my Virtual Machines without problem. Extrapolating that, to copy the exported folder to a removable drive and then imported it into another PC should work. Actually, 'exporting' is just the same than directly copying the folder (with de VM stopped).
