Pre-order now to be the first to get a copy of this book that has all my personal tips. geni.us/Simpli... Sweet potato slips are needed in order to grow sweet potatoes. You cannot grow them the same way as standard potatoes. They must be grown from slips. Buying Sweet Potato Slips is very expensive in the seed stores, typically costing around £4 or $7 each slip.
There are 3 ways to easily grow sweet potato slips and I show you each of these ways and their results. There is one way which is far superior and provides you with better quality and more sweet potato slips than you will know what to do with.
Loads of you have asked me how you make sweet potato slips and in this video, I take you through not only How To Grow SWEET POTATO SLIPS Productively but on the care, harvesting and storage of sweet potatoes too.

My best ever crop of slips came from a sweet potato that got lost in the back of the pantry. I spotted a couple of leaves near the door and followed the vine to find a sweet potato nest behind the flour sacks. I took a dozen strong slips and then put the tuber in compost in the greenhouse where it promptly died. I harvested 2-3kg of tubers from each of those slips. So then I put a tuber the same size as the original in the pantry where I found the nest hoping for a repeat. Nope. It just shrivelled up 🤨

I started in January, I got my sweet potatoes from Tesco, the organic section, plus they grew very well, had to eat some the foliage, because of poor light, the leaves were withered. Starting new slips to plant and grow the sweet potatoes.

I tried to grow slips from 3 organic potatoes. One using your 3rd method and 2 in jars of water. The only one that produced anything was one that was in a jar of water. The one thing that I did different with that one is that I kept that suspended over a heat source (a regular light that I could rest it on straddling the shade). That one has exploded with slips. There has got to be 15 or so growing from it. Bright green and very healthy looking. Thank you for the info you provided in your video. Well put.

I arrived at the best (third) way to create slips without seeing anyone do this, and yes it really works perfectly. I used Tesco Sweet potoes , just scrubbed them gently with warm water and a nailbrush and they have all sprouted. I think the key is keeping the compost moist all the time and sprouting them in a propogator at a near constant 75 deg F on a well lit window cill.

Thank the dear Lord...we also don’t grow them in pots or the ground but in straw bales they have wonderful loose decomposed soil here in our very hot climate to grow in maybe that’s what a few each year grow so big? We also eat the green leaves in salads so there is another food source, thank you for sharing your love and knowledge, stay blessed dear Garden lover!

the third method you described is what i am using. i have used the sweet potato in a glass many times great for producing roots very slow for slips, the wafer method even slower, the half buried in a tray cuts time in half. i leave a couple of slips on the buried potato their roots feed the mother. set on top of refrigerator; a cold windowsill slows them down.

I sure wish I would have watched this last year!!! I would have had tons of slips for now. I’m just thinking about growing sweet potatoes. I’ll need to purchase slips at this point because I don’t think I have time to make my own. Especially if the slips take 6 months to mature into a harvest. I cared for an elderly ladies sweet potato plants last year after she fell and couldn’t garden anymore. I didn’t think it took that long before I harvested a nice crop. Sweet potatoes make some very interesting shapes upon maturity. I’ll let you imagine. Thanks for this extremely informative video. Very well done.

    Hi Tony
Hope you are well and safe,
Yes I'm growing sweet potatoes again and like you I prefer the start them in compost, mine have started, so hopefully get a good load of slips before my main planting in May.
1 point is that the leaves of sweet potatoes are delicious and actually have more nutritional value than the sweet potato itself, so even if you don't get a huge harvest of the potatoes it's still worth growing them. 🌱👍

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  4 роки тому

  • @peace4peaceful

Not sure about the uk, but in oz i keep a few spuds in a spare spot and let the vines grow. Then snip off a foot slip n put them in a jar of water. Roots start after as little as two days.
Sometimes it can take a long time for spud to start making slips. Hence keeping a spare bit of dirt for them to grow vines.

The best way to make slips is to get a container make holes to drain and bury them. Cover them with about four inches of soil. Water them a couple times a week. It takes a couple weeks for the to start coming up. After they get over 6” hold the potato down and pull them up ! They will have lots of roots and ready to plant. It is by far the best way. You can get loads of slips. Try it you get a lot better root system !

I've put my SP in my fish tank and it's grown an amazing amount of roots and it's just started to grow some shoots. I've tested my water which is always high in nitrates as water we have here already has a significant amount of nitrates. And for the first time I've noticed a lower amount of nitrates. So a win win situation for both the fish and the sweet potato. Its a tropical tank so it has a good amount of heat in it already. When the shoots form, hopefully it will get extra light from the tank light too.

Hi Tony, you may not know that Kumara (sweet potatoes) are a major commercial crop in New Zealand. They were brought to NZ as a staple food source by our Maori peoples on their migrations from 1350 AD. Their archaeological cultivation and storage beds throughout the warmer North Island have been found dating from that time. Kumara are a staple of our winter veg table here and included with potatoes in roasts, stews and even summer salads as they are used similarly to a potato salad. For kitchen storage they can be cut in chucks and bagged up in the freezer ready for use as you might use pumpkin/squash.

Perfect timing! Have two sweet potatoes, bought from supermarket, which I didn't get to quickly enough and have produced slips by themselves! I assume I can use them to make more?
Pleased to report I am mostly recovered from chest infection, so getting out in the garden today with 3 year old daughter. We are following self isolation guidelines, so this will be a welcome break for her from being stuck indoors all week.
Hope you and yours are keeping safe! Take care!

The potato will quickly grow back more slips if you don't break them off, but cut them off. The potato has little trouble growing longer shoots after cutting but great stress restarting new growth buds to make shoots all over again. I like placing the cut slips into a glass of clean water for about 3 days to get roots before planting out.

You can eat the leaves like spinach, all parts of the plant are edible, so if there are few tubers, you can still benefit by growing them

Not a problem for me. I left one root in the ground and its now growing. I can grow them all year round and all I do is plant a sweet potato in the ground (no slips required for me). btw I grew all my sweet potatoes from store bought. Had no problems with germination, growth or harvest.

Tony, I love your videos!!! You share so much valuable information. I decided to root a sweet potato that was going bad. It has amazing slips on it. I want to grow them in grow bags but is now Sept in Denver, Co. Have you ever started them in the fall? We have a heated patio to keep the bags in. Your thoughts on growing indoors through winter?? I tried last year from a shop brought plant with leaves.... Never came to anything. Was a waste of time.
But now I know how to care for them. I'm gonna go and get some organic ones and grow em on the window. Love that my new, forever, home has a South facing garden and windows at the back ...means I can grow alot as it's a u shape with the garden back front and side all get lots of sunmonly shade is from the bungalow itself. I really hope that everything im doing this year works. As I'm trying hard and enjoying it.
