I'd formed the idea that SD were attractive to new ears (but only if they get to hear it...). The outtake of Green Earrings rhythm section, with Don's vocals + your magic remains my reference version. Go well.
This is the best 2nd Arrangement arrangement I’ve ever heard! Thank you both for bringing us so much joy - not only in the music but through your very positive and uplifting approach to your reactions. Btw, this is the tune that was reportedly inadvertently erased by an engineer and then re-recorded - but Donald and Walker couldn’t recreate it to their satisfaction
Hi guys, it's a strange feeling hearing an unreleased track. Never heard before, yet feels so familiar, like hearing from an old friend, not heard from in ages, and suddenly it's like it was only yesterday we spoke. Wonderful music. Thankyou, byeee Jim X
Yes! It was kinda like when we heard Free as a Bird in 96. I was seventeen again. It was only Yesterday. I'm guessing that if you asked the Beatles in 1977 what their favorite band was? They would all say in unison: "Steely Dan, of course!!". That's if you could get them all in one room and they were listening to Aja.
You're hearing what is a pretty obvious quote from The Bee Gees hit Night Fever in the guitar solos. The track even moves along with more of a disco beat than a typical Steely Dan track. My conspiracy theory is that they realized the similarity after laying the song down, and, not wanting any more legal issues at the time, deliberately erased it. They may have tried to re-record it without the Night Fever quote, but realized that was the only real hook in what is otherwise a textbook Steely Dan track. That may be why the track never made it onto Gaucho.
Thank you for this! Steely Dan is my favorite American band. Have been listening to them since I was in 9th grade. I am 64 now. Have seen them live 7 times. Keep up the great work. Have a great week. 😊 🎼🎵🎶🎙🎷🎺🥁🎹🎸
OMG! I’ve always heard of this song, but this was my first time to hear it! Fantastic! Donald needs to OWN these lost songs, remix them and release them himself! A new, authorized Steely Dan album! Thanks for this!
What a great Sunday afternoon surprise. NicknLex and Steely Dan. This version to me is very interesting with the horns but I don't think they ever got that far before the original got erased.A very emotional version is the one recently released by Roger Nichols daughter Cimcie Nicholas. Rodger Nicholas (aka The Immortal) was the recording engineer who invented the Wendel drum machine for Gaucho. He was Instrumental in most of Steely Dan's albums. Rodger took a digital tape copy of the 2nd Arrangement home with him the night that the master tape was erased. After the disappointment of the original master being destroyed he must have just filed it away somewhere. Rodger Nicholas died in 2011 or there abouts. The story as I know it is it took his Daughter Cimcie years to be able to face the emotional task of archiving and organizing the enormous amount of things he had archived. Some years later while she was organizing his collection she found it. The Holy Grail of lost Gaucho, a master tape and she took her tome to make sure that the tape wasn't destroyed in trying to listen to it. Early this summer There was a very emotional youtube video of her and her sister listening to the tape for the first time in studio with an engineer. I watched it about 10 times but it must currently be being blocked because now i cant find it. Cimcie still has lots of other content on UA-cam of home movies of Walter and Donald and lots of other stuff. Rodger was a collector and always had a video camera in his hand so its pretty cool. Christmas with Walter Becker and his Family with Rodgers family for example. Hopefully this version will return because it was great and was the most clean and original of what Walter and Donald had made. Also look at the online story by the Guardian titled "The most Important Cassette on the Planet' : How Steely Dan fans uncovered their holy grail"
I think this latest Miguel's version that Nick and Lex are reacting to here is based on that tape/DAT that Cimcie released recently. The horns are probably based on the only time Steely Dan actually played this tune live some 15 years ago.
Now Donald Fagen & the Walter Becker estate need to use the latest technology that The Beatles used for "Now & Then", also do the same with songs like "The Bear" and put it out.
Damn I’ve heard a few versions of this lost recording and this one sounds the best. You know because this song got erased it opened up Third World Man to be taken out of the Royal Scam vault and released on Gaucho. When that happened Larry Carlton got credit for being on an album he didn’t originally record on.
They didn’t throw this one out though. They were heartbroken about not being able to get it back to its potential cuz the assistant engineer erased the master
@@jsghetler Yheap... exactly. Sadly but now is back in his full glory... And the most beautiful and sad/terrible thing, at the same time, is as if they had actually put it on the album directly: not only does this version sound very good, as if we lived in an alternative universe where this WAS NEVER DELETED BY ACCIDENT, but The lyrics haven't aged a bit and in fact hit the nail on the head with the SAME problem as always. We easily forget that the music sounds great but the lyrics to it are depressing as hell. It aged well because it never aged: couple relationships, be they dating, married or even parents, in which their love life falls apart or falls apart or they even get divorced, and many ask to start from scratch as the music says. It is timeless music, as if it were thrown at you yesterday and it hits like a truck because it is an almost cyclical reality of humanity.
Thank you for this. UA-cam is striking all of these, so this probably won't last.... so THANK YOU. I'm watching it over and over to catch the magic before it flies away. xo
It's so unfair for any entity to delete the hard work that JM did to reassemble this song for the fans of Steely Dan. Especially when it perfectly fits the SD catalog to a tee. I know it's not sanctioned by the big heads, but I wish they would give it a blessing and bring the great music of the Dan that this guy remixed, back to the people!
Hey Jive Miguel: meet me at midnight at Mr Chow’s. Lol 😜 Excellent reaction, NicknLex! Story I heard: when Donald was told by their long-time engineer, Nichols, that the tape was erased/lost, Fagen walked out silently - too upset to say anything (later calling it the most emotional setback in the studio ever). Nichols’ daughter, Cimcie, found the work tapes recently and has posted YT videos of her father’s time with Steely Dan. Thanks 😊 ❤️
Hi MM That youtube tape of 2nd arrangement seems to be sadly missing from youtube. I watched it a bunch but I cant find it presently. Cimcie has lots of other stuff about her dad and Steely Dan up. But no more 2nd arrangement. Hopefully that version will return it was very clean an was original no horns and It seems like the bass parts were a bit different.

Nick and Lex - thank you for hitting the 2nd Arrangement. This was the track the assistant engineer accidentally deleted. Such a shame. Michael Caplin has/had a great cleaned up version. But I haven’t found it since Universal ‘recalled’ the Roger Nichols tape. Scott Sheriff and a group of musicians recently posted a new live version.
That song is a collection of some of the absolute best players available. Between Steve Gadd on drums, Chuck Rainey on bass, Donald Fagen on piano/keyboard/vocal, and all of the other stellar folks involved, it’s no wonder that so many fans constantly tried to clean up or repair the few simple recordings that existed until the legendary Nichols Tapes were discovered.
As much as I admire JM’s musicianship and his well intentioned vision of what this song might have been as a finished track, I prefer the pure track. The bones of the original track are beautiful as is, and it feels a bit sacrilegious to impose another artist’s vision onto those bones. LOL I’ve since heard several different versions since, including the recently discovered version found in artifacts from late Steely Dan engineer Roger Nichols. But I have NEVER heard a version that included the horn arrangement that I KNEW had to have been the final missing element, until today. Great reaction, as always! Thanks for sharing. 😊❤
Now whether these are the actual horn charts that Donald and Walter would have authorized or only Jive Miguel’s best guess for an approximation, I don’t know. I’m not sure if they ever got to the point where the horns were recorded, as the infamous erasure of the original master might have happened beforehand. But these certainly sound authentic to the general style and vibe of the Dan’s sound circa 1979-80. So Bravo either way, Jive Miguel!! 👏
This would have been the last track on gaucho, but they’re studio engineer, accidentally erased it. Instead, we got Third World man which was left over from The Royal Scam. There’s an amazing remastered copy on UA-cam. Without the horns.
The thing is that Tom Scott had the original horn version for this track. Unfortunately, he does not have it anymore and can't remember how it went. Therefore, I would rather here the track without the horns as anybody could come up with something but it would not be what was originally intended. Unless Donald and Tom Scott come up with something thing themselves. Was this the original horn arrangement?
So tasty! I love that I watched your first ever Dan experience and have watched every one since. I am going on 70 now and I get to re-live my own Dan journey through your discovery of this amazing group.
Second Arrangement master was accidentally erased by an engineer just before the horns were to be mixed in. I think JM's (2nd) arrangement is very close - it sounds very Donaldesque.
Now it is easy to hear why D&W and Gary Katz thought it was the best record on the album. What a shame. Still, it is great to hear 2nd Arrangement in all its glory (or close to it)!
Where can I hear this song without all of the talking over it? What an awesome song, but I'd love to hear a clean copy of it. The link you have says it has been removed due to copyright issues. Thanks!
Thank you for reacting (at last!) to this great tune 😊 There exists one and only one version of this song played live by Donald and Walter (RIP) also with added horns . Sound quality is not perfect but at least it's original arragement of the Second arragement 😉
I don’t think Donald would revisit this song. He doesn’t like to look back, and he didn’t even want to continue touring under the name Steely Dan without Walter, but the current economics of the music business made that unfeasible. The Eagles pretty much have had the same problem.
I’m surprised Donald and his manager Irving Azoff ok’d this as it is a remix of the original tune. It certainly doesn’t sit well with me. The version recorded some 9 months ago in Nashville is real with professional musicians including Michael O’Martian who played with SD , Scott Sherrif and mixed by Bill Schnee who won a Grammy as an engineer on AJA. See for yourself. ua-cam.com/video/CEEJLxHNxfM/v-deo.htmlsi=twdWZsj0oWnkMgLl
I cannot stop myself from rhythmically moving my hips to this, even when I stop myself I subconsciously start again a few beats later. What an absolute banger, here's the best cover of this song you're gonna hear: ua-cam.com/video/u0_I4n8PnbU/v-deo.html Enjoy your day
That's a nice cover too. But have you seen the cover featured on the channel of Scott Sheriff? That one is really brilliant and features a whole band including a horn section and also keyboard player Michael Omartian, who originally played on Donald Fagen's The Nightfly. ua-cam.com/video/CEEJLxHNxfM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=ScottSheriff In terms of playing and sound quality, this is in my opinion is the best version.
Oh yeah well at least I can play most of Steely Dan's solos on my guitar. On the channel on video. Can you do that genius? Another negative comment from you and I'll just block you. How about that?
I agree. The arrangement in the cover version on Scott Sheriff's channel fits much better with the song in my opinion. (ua-cam.com/video/CEEJLxHNxfM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=ScottSheriff) In the Jive Miguel mix the horns are a bit overbearing.
Thanks again for the review! UMG have shut me down so the link in the description won’t work now but all my mixes are up on my Soundcloud.

Now it is easy to hear why D&W and Gary Katz thought it was the best record on the album. What a shame. Still, it is great to hear 2nd Arrangement in all its glory (or close to it)!
Smooth Steely Dan. as always!!
Sound good....!!!
Where can I hear this song without all of the talking over it? What an awesome song, but I'd love to hear a clean copy of it. The link you have says it has been removed due to copyright issues. Thanks!
I found a guy on reddit who has a Link to a drop box with a zip file with this version and other un released songs
Thank you for reacting (at last!) to this great tune 😊 There exists one and only one version of this song played live by Donald and Walter (RIP) also with added horns . Sound quality is not perfect but at least it's original arragement of the Second arragement 😉
Here is link to that concert

Gaucho is a great album, this song would've enlivened it and made it even better.
Can you guys please make sure you put all the Steely Dan/Fagen/Becker reactions in the playlist? Some of them are hard to find
Sorry, wasn’t aware but I’ll double check them!!
At some point, try some Walter Becker. Maybe start with Somebody’s Saturday Night, or Cringemaker. Good to see how he informed the Dan canon.
If this had made it in the gaucho album it would have been the goat
They removed this version from UA-cam. I watched it 100 times and now it's gone.
💛🙏
I don’t think Donald would revisit this song. He doesn’t like to look back, and he didn’t even want to continue touring under the name Steely Dan without Walter, but the current economics of the music business made that unfeasible. The Eagles pretty much have had the same problem.
@@kbrewski1 I’d love to hear a recording of that set.
Always loved the bootleg versions of this, not keen on the busy brass TBH 😢
I’m surprised Donald and his manager Irving Azoff ok’d this as it is a remix of the original tune. It certainly doesn’t sit well with me.
The version recorded some 9 months ago in Nashville is real with professional musicians including Michael O’Martian who played with SD , Scott Sherrif and mixed by Bill Schnee who won a Grammy as an engineer on AJA. See for yourself.

I cannot stop myself from rhythmically moving my hips to this, even when I stop myself I subconsciously start again a few beats later. What an absolute banger, here's the best cover of this song you're gonna hear: ua-cam.com/video/u0_I4n8PnbU/v-deo.html
Enjoy your day
That's a nice cover too. But have you seen the cover featured on the channel of Scott Sheriff? That one is really brilliant and features a whole band including a horn section and also keyboard player Michael Omartian, who originally played on Donald Fagen's The Nightfly.

In terms of playing and sound quality, this is in my opinion is the best version.
shades of Nightfly...
I would like a copy of this. The “ssssssssssssss” noise the commentator is making is a little annoying
Then maybe go watch the original without us. :)
It’s gone. :(
Hmm. Nice and groovy, but a bit disco-y. Not top-tier SD, to me. The guitar helps it get a bit better at the end.
So what? It's great anyway.
The disco is the reason it's so could. Could be in their top 10
It is embarrasing watching you
Oh yeah well at least I can play most of Steely Dan's solos on my guitar. On the channel on video. Can you do that genius? Another negative comment from you and I'll just block you. How about that?
I wouldn't mind horns, but the way they were arranged in this version isn't really doing the song any good.
I agree. The arrangement in the cover version on Scott Sheriff's channel fits much better with the song in my opinion. (ua-cam.com/video/CEEJLxHNxfM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=ScottSheriff)
In the Jive Miguel mix the horns are a bit overbearing.
Hate the horns it’s better without it. 100% chuck rainey
Hi there, I heard this cover and was blown away. What you just played blew me away even further! Thx! ua-cam.com/video/CEEJLxHNxfM/v-deo.html
