This was known as the SEE Tractor in the US ARMY. Pain in the ass to work on, problem getting parts for them. We had all the attachments for them. Was hydraulic powered, drilling/boring and a real adventure to operate.
Most comprehensive explanation on the 'Mog I've seen for longer. Thanks. And - noteweorthy: the gear split works as well in reverse. And in Low / 1st gear low at 1000 rpm on the engine you could leave the cab and walk along side by side with the Mog. "Crawler gear" is as slow as 2 mph.
I was one of the first to be trained on this style of SEE's just prior to being emplemented through out the Army. You can take the front loader off in 15 minutes and the rear off in about 30 minutes. Biggest thing that this unit had trouble with was the fuel filters. I have worked many hours on these units and have done lots of work on the engines and undercarrage. I see that it is missing the spare tire. They were fun to operate and work on. Great unit that with proper care, it will do whatever you want it to do. I have dug many ditches, fox holes, and whatever else was needed for the years that I was on Active Duty. They are pretty stable but can be bouncing pretty bad at times.
I agree very capable machine. I have heard about issues with fuel filters and priming issues etc, i personally did not have any issues. I did take the spare off when i was plumbing the added on hydraulics for the thumb/winch addition. As far as bouncy i used to tell people it was similar to driving a mickey mouse hipity hop down the road. (you younger kids will need to look those up).. lol . Thanks for watching!
The ONLY issue I have found with mine,. Is when driving on the road, it literally feels like I'm a bobble head,.. it basically rolls side to side, front to rear, and caddy corner also. Every time a car passes, my butthole draws up so tight that u couldn't push a needle thru it. All the suspension seems to b functioning correctly, and no slop/play in any of it either,. No missing bolts, etc. It has about 11,500 miles on it. Do u think that the cool springs and shocks/struts need to b replaced?
Tremendous knowledge. I’ve been watching a lot of videos on these unimogs. You pretty much combined all videos in one! Couple things to add. You mentioned the SEE and HMMH but there’s also the HME (high mobility entrencher) big ass trencher in the back and push blade in front. Only 153 HME, 164 HMMH and 2086 SEE. Also freightline HQ is in Portland Oregon where they fully assembled them, it says on the tag. they used Stanley for all there hydraulic tools. On the case MB4/49 they used warn winchs with there HQ being Clackamas Oregon. I’ll stop yappin there. Im watching two mogs on auction next week, I hope to get one for a good deal(10k-13k) only
I have thousands of hours with one of those. I know them inside and out. Many consider them junk and in a sense they were. But they did their jobs it was designed to do. Definitely served its purpose during Desert Shield/Storm.
Love your video. Has been helpful in several ways. I did have an issue with the momentary switch. I remembered you saying something about it. Rewatched the video, ordered the switch off Amazon. Will install next time I’m at my farm. Great info for anyone who had one of these.
Take your time shopping if the deal sounds to good to be true it probably is, there are many guys out there who buy and flip military items to the general public who do not know what they are or are not looking at or are overwhelmed. I am sad to admit but i am debating selling mine to fund other projects that are much less cool/fun.
Just bought me one about a month ago. I absolutely love it. Very versatile machine. Just installed all new lines on feint half,.. back half next. I did have a few questions about mine,. But your detailed video answered every single one, except.. What is the BEST replacement tire to use. I blew out one yesterday, and had to drive home over a mile.. tire slapping, and with the front bucket loaded with rock. Not much fiun...
Glad the video helped. i did research tires and there were a couple new options. Also some direct replacements available via surplus auctions and ebay, but likely are the same as what you have. (Look new but are dry rotted and cant take the load). I dont remember the make of the ones i was planning to get, i never bought them as i had many spares to work threw. and have since sold the vehicle. I recommend calling a truck (over the road TT) tire shop. Thanks for watching.
I just put replacement tires on mine. I went with surplus 335/80R20 Pirelli PS22 Pista tires. They fit the same but have a 6700lb load rating. I feel the original tires were over loaded at 4400lb rating, since the tractor weighs 16000 to start with, and you can put 3300lb in the front loader.
Hello I Just Found Your Video, Good Work on the Info. Very Useful! Thank You. I Just Acquired One and would like to ask about the Mods You Crafted. (Do you have Another Video that Walks Thru the Supplemental Parts and Installation?) Also, Just FYI the Front of Your 419 is Simply Missing the Skid Plate, that Protects the Underside of Radiator. Last, Not Sure if I Missed It but is it Possible to Post a Link for the Momentary Switch that is Behind the Paddle. Thanks
I do not have any other videos of the mog and i have since sold the machine. Below is the link for the momentary switch i used for the clutch. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06ZY1LVVV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Thanks for watching !
Also, this is not a traditional air brake system you find on semis, etc , but basic air over hydraulic, you need the air pressure for the brakes to work, but not to release the brakes like a semi etc
Just look up JL Case and the rest of the story tells itself for US purposes... worked on them in 1980's in the USMC. I have a 1975 - 406 variant in Reno, Nevada.
I haven't watched it all yet, but you mentioned an air compressor, is there access to that system for use in filling a bottle / operating a pneumatic tool?
Yes you can utilize the air system. the easiest way is Via the Glad Handles in the rear. A standard glad handle will thread directly onto a standard 3/8 air hose. I dont think you would have the CFM necessary to run air tools with any level of efficiency as the on board air tank is rather small (guessing 3 gallon) but it certainly enough to run a trailer brake system and fill tires etc.
Actually, you use it in all gears in either high or low range, you dont select through them the way you explained. We have the same machine and also a u140 unimog that uses the same transmission.
the military test port is in the center of the floor between the seats. couple inches in diameter round with alot of pins. That is the only port i know of, I do not have the tool and have never used one. I have always wondered what can be tested and learned from them
Gotcha. I just purchased one out of texas and am ready to get it running strong. Should be at my shop within a week. Your video definitely helped alot. And i agree they are super unique pieces! Any more tips or advice would greatly be appreciated too!!! Im not sure where i should go should i need pieces.
@@mikestowinginnh7866 also i have seen people shift these vehicles without using the splitter. Would you recommend against it or do you think its fine on the transmission to not use the splitter?
@@Spiz117 The trick with any military vehicle is part numbers. It is far easier to locate parts using the part and nsn numbers then by application. With a bit of searching you can often find the same parts on a non-military vehicle part or restoration site for a fraction of the cost. Many military vehicle parts are used in civilian and industrial applications.your mog is 45% mercedes and 45% Case. probably only 10% of the parts are unique to the flu419. You should be able to find the parts and operators manual online. if not i can email them to you. you can most definitely drive it without the splitter there are times you will use it and times you will not, depending on what you are doing and your terrain
about 45mph but impossible to maintain unless you are on a flat. In this video it is cold out so alot of condensation smoke, also i am running it a low rpm which puts a heavier load on the engine and will cause a bit of smoke as well. But like any machine with the exhaust 5 feet behind your head you expect a few mouthfulls ! thanks for watching
Felicidades.. ya también amo los unimogs . Me ofrecieron uno igual en Perú.. quisiera saber cuanto te costó el tuyo, para tener una idea .. me están pidiendo $30'000
Not if you keep with the maintenance manual and maintain it according to specs. It has been developed for farming, construction and community work - and therefore gladly taken over by the military. Even the engine out is no difficult thing. Everything is designed to be maintained "on the vehicle" - and the add ons can be removed in 10 - 30 minutes. Leaves you with a bare "Tractor" of some sort. You should be knowledgable about air systems and hydraulics however - and need very few but very specific tools and skills. The engine itself is generic Mercedes small truck division. Non-Turbo. 🙂
