Hunting Montana Archery Elk with Randy Newberg and Corey Jacobsen (FT S4 E3)

  • Hunting Montana archery elk with Randy includes nine-time World Elk Calling Champion, Corey Jacobsen, in Randy's favorite Montana general tag area. The public land elk are pressured and weary, but you would not know that from this episode. Grouse and grizzlies add a bit of spice to this hunt. This hunt is Episode 3 from Season 4 of Fresh Tracks.

    You guys are great hunters, doing a great job at promoting hunting in a positive light for all hunters. Hell, you may even melt the frozen hearts of an anti or two! As a fellow hunter I thank you for your service and your show.

    It's awesome to see how you guys are always smiling! Hunting with a positive person is the best way to get success! Its nice to see you don't have to always post videos of you killing you do and amazing job of showing what hunting is truly all about! You guys show how hard it is and to me watching videos where the "pros" don't succeed is the best way for me to learn!! Thanks for the awesome videos Randy!!

      Thanks for watching. We have a blast when we are together. I am glad it comes through on video. Neither of us are too concerned about filling every tag, so it is pretty easy to enjoy it for what it is.

    I have seen corey hunt with other guys and do the same thing. Pass on shooter elk , sometimes more than one. People call him an elk snob and dont like him for it. I think he truly loves the hunt and the enounters and does not want to end the hunt early. Cant hate a guy for that. There is only one september a year. Not to mention he is one of the best so why would he not think he would get another chance. Plus he usually hunts more than one state . why just shoot them just to shoot them when you can shoot the one your after another day. Great video.

      He's a great guy. If I could call them in as good as Corey can, I would pass some of them, also.

    Great Vid Cory and Ranch!
    WOW, when he bugled at about 4:15 I could have sworn that was NOT the bull calling but you can see him do it. REALITY CHECK: sometimes a bull sounds as bad as a hunter with a tooter horn bugle.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  8 років тому +1

      Funny you say that. When I heard it bugle, from further up the hill, I thought we had called in another hunter. As you say, goes to show that elk don't always sound like world champion callers. Good luck this season.

    Some times we not as good as we think, this ain't no problem if ya hunt for antlers . I have never passed on a perfect shot , I look at it as this is what I was gifted to eat. Thanks grandfather. I bet the first one would have tasted better than a bucket full of memories. We have shot a few biggins. The oldest one was the first tough hamburger I ever had. We ended up making the whole thing into quadruple ground hamburger jerky. Every one got jerky for Christmas . C

    So would you hunt an area like this in rifle season? I know the timber and elk migrating off could be factors for rifle hunting.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  8 років тому

      Not in MT rifle season. By then, the bulls are headed off to their sanctuary areas. The cows and young bulls might still be in these spots, but not the mature bulls. I would look for places further from roads, higher up, in the direction of where they will be migrating as winter approaches. Good luck.

    Hey Randy, Great episode! Just goes to show that you can have a great time walking away with tag soup, i know ive done it many of times :D You show off the bear spray at one point and time but I'm curious, do you take a sidearm with you and if so which is your preference? I hunt the same area quite often and my 357 always comes with as you never really know what can happen. Hope you have some great hunts this year from a fellow bozemanite!

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  8 років тому +1

      I don't take a sidearm. It is legal in MT, but having had two close encounters with G-bears, it became obvious that it happens so fast, the only thing a handgun could help me with would be to put myself out of my misery. Good luck this season.

    Randy...good stuff. Corey loves to hunt in "pre-rut", was this the case for your Montana hunt? What dates in Sept. were you guys hunting? Am curious as to "when" you archery hunted in relationship to "equinox" and "moon phases"? And I think watching U guys is better than Netflix...keep up the good work and sacrifice, it feeds this weekend "want to be".

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  8 років тому +1

      This was late September, so it was into the peak rut. I'm not sure what the moon phase was. I really don't pay any attention to moon phase, as if I have a tag, I'm hunting, no matter the moon. Best of luck to you.

    Randy was randy for grouse

      I'm always "Randi for grouse," even if elk are bugling.

      If grouse had horns he would never hunt anything else

    That is ridiculous. That was a shooter by any standard. I suppose you could make a case for the first day, but I like nothing better than to shoot a good one on the first day! Then you go back to camp eat some backstrap or Grouse, maybe drink a couple of beers, work on butchering, and think about what you're going to do the rest of the week. Maybe go fishing!

    First Randy says this place is not hunted much then Cory comes RIGHT back and says these Elk are Pressured a lot and hunted a lot thus Timid to calling. Which is it boys? Get you're Story straight. Lol

    I'll mildly disagree w/ you, I'much rather hunt grouse behind a good setter, I grew up with 'em. I swear I hunt grouse to work w/ the dog, that's the source of my addiction. ;)

    • @Fresh_Tracks

      No disagreement here. When I had retrievers, my waterfowl hunting was all about the dogs and their retrieving.

      @@Fresh_Tracks: I'll admit to one more reason for the addiction; ruffed grouse beats the tar out of any other bird for flavor!

      Corey is a super fun guy. You never know when he is serious or joking, which makes it that much more fun. I have a handful of great friends who are appreciative of life's blessings and Corey is among the handful I speak of.
