God bless cave story, but good lord the hoops you have to go through to get the secret final level and ending.
For those of you who haven't played it, there is one point in the game in which you get to a room with a ravine running through it, and what looks like an exit on the other side. Upon entry a scripted event plays out in which you see one of the main characters teleport in out of thin air and will drop down the breadth of the ravine. Should you follow him down the ravine you will discover the walls are too steep to scale back up and you are now stuck with no option save to speak to him. Now in case you were simply concerned with the immediate progression, the jump across the ravine is extraordinarily difficult and on a first run you'd be likely to think to be simply impossible, and that you are, in fact, meant to fall down the ravine to progress, given not only will running it to short result in you falling down the ravine, but there's a slight lip going over the top of the platform with the exit so jumping *too late* from the starting platform will result in you hitting a solid wall and falling into the ravine, *meaning there is a specific point at which you are meant to jump from in order to successfully cross*. Back to the manner at hand, speaking to him will reveal that he is dying and entrusts to you his jetpack before passing on in a poof of white smoke. Equipping the jetpack allows you to to scale the ravine and escape through the exit.
    Sounds like natural progression right?
Well, what you were supposed to do for the secret final level and ending involves *completely ignoring the man stuck at the bottom of the ravine* (most likely the decision so backwards Yahtzee's own skeleton attempted to escape his body) and executing that one, extremely obscure and precise jump to get to the across. You then have to go through the next few levels handicapped due to the lack of jetpack, jump through a couple other ridiculous hoops (that I won't get into now) until you get back to the main hub area, whereupon the man who fell down the ravine will teleport in, *apparently unscathed and quite alive*, and give you an *upgraded version of the jetpack. There is no allusion to him ever having been in mortal danger, or even mention of what happened down in that ravine, how speaking to him might have lead him to ending his life, or how holding unto the jetpack might have saved him somehow.*
I think Yahtzee's fully justified to assume Pixel may be just a little bit mad after going through that, *and more...*

  • @AlluMan96
    @AlluMan96 9 років тому +8

I wouldn't say Cave story's difficulty necessarilly curves gracefully. It's quite steady for the first 4/5ths of the game, catching you off-guard on occasion, but never to frustrating lengths and it never seems to be getting harder so much as it is accomodating your progression and growth in that Dark Souls kind of way, where the game demands as much from you at every moment of the way. Then by the time you get to the last platforming bit, it suddenly skyrockets the difficulty up by a signifigant amount. The last cave can be extremely difficult for your first time and the final boss is 1 fight too long and has an odd subverted difficulty to itself. Then you get to the good ending final dungeon and the game spikes drastically again. While the last cave raised the difficulty to an excpected level in comparison to the rest of the game, the Bloodstained Sanctuary feels like your playing an entirely different game from how difficult it is. A massively dawnting marathon that doesn't feel seemless in the difficulty ascent at all.

@@adamloga3788 Kingdom hearts really isn’t that good, he would’ve hated any of them. Terrible narrative, awkward menu/real time gameplay, very button mashy, cliche characters and plot elements, the worlds are small and (poorly) rehash old Disney stories, etc.
People just like them because of the nostalgia and the novelty of the crossover (but even the crossover elements were mostly MIA after the first game). The soundtrack and character designs are probably the only worthwhile elements of the games.

I had no idea about the jet pack either because I always assumed that jump was impossible. The clues were there, in that one room that contains the hidden passage to hell in a random bookcase that has Booster's journal talking about said jet pack and saying that if he didn't die, he might've been able to make it better. Then again, not everyone's going to check every bookshelf or realize that you can make the jump over that pit, etc.
Those things aside, you don't need the best endings or the best weapons or life capacity, etc. because of the strengths it focuses on. Unless you're a completionist like me.

    • @HGScout

Darkmega11 The "second quest" for the better ending is pretty rad, though, and without it, the game isn't nearly as memorable. If you don't do it, you never even find out your character's name, and you miss out on a bunch of other things that deepen the whole experience.
So I feel like 'skipping the jet pack' is actually an integral part of the Cave Story experience. If you never do it, then you never really see what makes the game special.

I really like Cave Story overall, sure the good ending is complete bull, and the Jellyfish juice sidequest is horrible, but I had no problem with the Jump Arcs, it was easy with Difficulty increases in the correct part except for Hell, which in my opinion was actually EASIER than facing off against the boss fights before it. (Go figure) My only REAL grudge with it is that it is WAY to easy to pick up energy crystals with the nemesis, while half the other time it's like balancing on a tight rope while reading Hamlet with all the exaggerated movements of an interpretative dance.

Nicalis apparently swindled Studio Pixel into giving them the Cave Story IP when they were SUPPOSED to be negotiating for the license to port the game to consoles so you are no longer supporting Studio Pixel, but rather Nicalis. If you want to know more about Nicalis, I strongly suggest that you look up the 2019 article by Kotaku's Jason Schreier regarding that company!

How to swim, and how long before you die. But, that could have been done many other ways. The first playthrough of this game i was so lost and confused, but never to the point of giving up. This is a hard, but fun game. Highly recommend.

It's a shitty mechanic since there's no reason to do so other than "knowing that it gets the good ending", which you can't know unless you skip it (presumably by accident or somehow), or unless you read a guide online.

Oh my god that analogy for the difficulty curve is perfect. I had the bad idea to try and beat the game 100% on hard mode, meaning I didn't have either the jetpack or machinegun to fight the core and that I have to make it through hell with only 8 hp. Meaning that everything nearly 1 shots me except for the very basic enemy.
I started that playthrough 3 years ago. I've yet to complete it, and I'm not sure I ever will. The closest I've got is about 2/3rds of the way down the hp bar of the final bosses final form.
