Sharpening an axe with a file - What's best?

- The East Coast Lumberjack has some new files from RaceWerks in the USA to try on his axes. Are they as Good as files from India, Aukland Grangier, or even China? Join him for this and also for some good pointers on how to get a razor sharp axe that will chop!
Another great job! The best axe sharpening demo I ever saw was by the guy who developed the Razor Edge Sharpening System. He had a big bushy beard. He would go to a fair with his little girl and make like he was going to sharpen a rusty old double bitter on a stone. Just before he started he would hand the axe head to his daughter. She would sharpen using his method then hand the axe to him. He would then shave his beard off! He wrote the razor edge book of sharpening and had electron micrograph pictures done showing why his system worked - no oil, no water. My go to these days for regular sharpening is Chestnut Tools tungsten carbide folding sharpener. I have even used it on shovels. For a bad axe I would go with a double cut axe file one side and mill file on the other side to finish. I took a hatchet I couldn't touch with a file to my oldtimer friend. He tested it then chucked the whole thing in his wood stove. I was dumbfounded. Eventually he took the axe head out, dipped the blade end in some oil and watched the colors change as it cooled. He cleaned it, made a nice handle then filed it with a mill file. Told me it was a cheap China axe that had been tempered too hard so he fixed it for me. And yes he did - plus I got a way better handle - 24" long for better balance and more utility.

i can only deram of all the axes, handles, knives, guns, bows even files, camping gear, skillets, pots and apans, tools. we hardly or dont have hardy anything in the UK after world War Two. i am lumber jack, bushcrafter and old schooled old guy in ayoung mans body. i treuly evny your skills , tools, and your hummour is very addictive. i want a American rusty , crusty axe or skillet. but its so expansive and its the shipping that put people off in the Uk. and people are not as friendly as people in the USA, for eiher, giving, presenting you or selling you anything as you guys over the ponds.keep up the good work , cheers Hans, you remind me of the Famous Actor Paul Newman.

I just picked up a new 12” smooth Nicholson file from my local Ace Hardware. I have used Nicholson files for years - they were the best. I just wondered how a new edition of these files compared to USA made files. These were made in Brazil. I will say - I see no difference. I filed the edge of a 200 year old broad axe. It went through it, like crap through a goose.
I am older then you Rod and probably just as stubborn. The progressive lens are the answer but you have to commit to leaving them on your face for a minimum of a week. At least that is what I did and now I don't even notice them after 10 years.
LOL! How do you make out backing up big machinery? It was this, and losing my peripheral vision for bowhunting that keeps me on the traditional bi-focal.
@@eastcoastlumberjack Yeah I cursed a lot at first. Especially driving when I had to turn my whole head when crossing roads ut I got used to it.

On the SVST Austrian files, are they the standard or Superchrome version?

How do you feel about the "rag method" of file sharpening. I realize it gives you a convex edge but if you didn't increase the folds of the rag and kept it at one height I suspect you'd get a flat grind ?

@@Joey-L Yes - I plan to go over this next video with the angles so you can get a more exact edge....but the concept is very similar. We will measure the height so you know what your angle actually is. I suspect with the rag it is around 16 degrees, and each fold adds another 2 or 3 degrees. If you leave it at one fold, it will do exactly what I was taught and provide a great edge..flat bevel.
Clean the rust off first Rod, I use a fine wire brush to clean the file😁

I knows where I'm getting my axe handles from from now on 😉 and KN knives here in Newfoundland got my blades covered. All made right here in KA ...NAH... DAAAAA !!!!.
