That's pride killing. Sometimes I wonder if Rocky could ignore everything and just stop the fighting, even tough apollo would never talk to him again. But it's helpless after all. It's the warriors path to fight your enemy until the end. Nobody would be able to stop this fight.

Also Rocky could have thrown in the towel but as we see the ref tried to intervene and the Russian pushed him away so maybe that would have not helped.

Nah, this was a perfect ending. One it showed real consequences and stakes. I think it was the first major boxing movie that showed a death in the ring. Secondly it set the story of Apollo Creed's son. I don't know if Stallone had this vision when he made Rocky V, but Adonis vs Drago's son was one of the most emotional and gratifying fight scenes in cinema history. Kudos to Stallone and the writers for setting this up almost 40 years before.
Nevermind how huge Ivan Drago appears to be but from the very first time Apollo tried to smash his gloves down and Drago's arms didn't move...that should have been a clear indication that Drago had "Incredible Hulk" strength...he beat Apollo to a bloody pulp within the 1st round. And Rocky!? I blame him too! Because sometimes you've got to protect your hard headed friends from doing dumb stuff. All Rocky had to do was throw the towel and his friend would still be alive....

Drago was so misunderstood 1. Apollo was being a dick. He did not need to be. Plus he always had the habbit of underestimating his opponents 2. In the US, exhibition matches are really just to put on a show. But in other countries, it is an audition. It is their ticket to big money fights which will be able to make them feed their family. So they will really go all out. 3. Drago is brainwashed by a totalitarian regime that was using him as a prized race horse to humiliate its rival superpower 4. Drago was still high on adrenalin and confused with all the Camera flashes. Plus he did not speak a lot of English Good thing his character arc was eventually fixed
