I vividly remember the day this album was released. I was going through an extremely challenging time in my life at that point. I was homeless and mightily struggling with drugs and alcohol. I was outside freezing my ass off in the Winter weather and hearing this album really helped me feel better and get through those scary and dark times. Thank you Machine Head for always helping me in my toughest times!
This album got some pretty mixed reviews and I believe sold around the average of MH albums (which as we all know Metal albums in particular haven't sold well since the likes of streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music and of course the almighty UA-cam have dwindled album sales and even back when illegal downloading platforms back in the early to mid 2000's really did a number on artists being able to sell a substantial amount of records). In my opinion there's some really solid songs on this album such as the title track, Psychotic, California Bleeding (the bass lines in particular are some of my favorites of MH!), Heavy Lies the Crown, etc. But then there's some doozers such as Triple Beam, Bastards, Kaleidoscope (though it is a pretty rad song when played live!), etc. Overall it's a cool album but fat from my favorite of theirs and actually is one of their worst in my humble opinion. Machine Head are one of my favorite bands and always will be and they mean the world to me! They put on some of the best live shows of any band and treat their fans like gold. MH hold a special place in my heart and always will! When they last played Baltimore City, Maryland back on December 4th, 2022 we RAWKED that venue! Just not a big fan of the lyrics), "Volatile", "Heavy Lies the Crown" and a few others are pretty good songs. Not a big fan of "Triple Beam", "Razorblade Smile", "Hope Begets Hope" (it's not a BAD song but just never could get into it much), etc. But hey most bands put out at least one not so great album. Other than "Catharsis" their other albums are fantastic (I even really enjoy a lot of "Supercharger" though it's probably their second worst album next to "Catharsis" lol).
