“Aggressively mediocre” might be my new favorite phrase. You’re a legend. Great job
Haha it’s one of my favorite phrases ever. Glad you like it too !
GUYS I WAS THE ONE IN THE SHORT FILM!!! Great job Carsten
Thanks Thomas!!
its a crime you only have 212 subs, this is high quality content and super duper insightful
Thank you , i really appreciate that
This was so much fun to watch. Please please please make more videos like this!
Glad you liked it, maybe I’ll make some more 🤷♂️
Teaching a cinematography class this week and I am using this breakdown as a resource for great images on a nimble budget. Amazing work!
This made my day, thank you! Really appreciate you watching
This is inspiring me to finish my short film, I really appreciate your transparency and openness! Can’t wait to see more of what you create.
Finish it man!! You got this! Really appreciate you watching!
super interesting, love watching people break stuff like this down and this came up before I had even watched the actual film. Both were really good!
Glad you enjoyed! I love watching breakdowns like this too so it was fun to finally make one
It came out fire, great work !
Thanks dude! Really appreciate it!
This film was so fun to watch and even more fun to see broken down, super inspiring!
Dude that makes me so happy to hear! haha I'm glad you liked the breakdown too. That was like my first time every talking to camera and I was so nervous. so I'm glad you got something from it!! Appreciate you big time Dawson!!
Beautiful video, i'm really thankful for this amazing breakdown. It's really Inspirational.
Thank you Jonathan, that makes me so happy that you found this helpful. It makes all the work that goes into these videos worth it. Appreciate you big time!
You know i never thought about headsets being useful for me cuz im usually on small sets like yours for my indie stuff but the use case of just quite chill comms is soo smart i never thought if that! thanks for that insite! plus lets not forget they look coool and give the crew that "knows what they are doing" look 😎 great work all around man!
Haha I felt about 50x cooler wearing that headset. Honestly worth it alone just for that. But it is really helpful not having to yell across set. Appreciate you watching!!
I enjoyed watching this so much. It’s awesome to see the vision come to life
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it
insane that this is your first shot at narrative dude - awesome break down :) making stuff IS hard but you killed it
Thanks dude! means a lot coming from you. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch!
im new to production wrote my first movie and about to start the shoot and basically doing it just like you I already know shots songs and I also don't have a lot of experience but have good mentors and great cinemetgephers that I feel comfortable but nervous but got almost all ready good luck on your future projects and hey hope in working one day with you I think this is a different way of making movies and will continue to change and I feel we will be part of it great work!!!!!!! also self invested and all most all done by me and so much cash I have spent but feel the same as you hope for the best expect the worse cuz I been putting a lot of cash in to my first Indi film and im using the SONY FX-3 as A camera and the FX-30 for B camera
Yo dude, that's awesome!! Good luck on your film, I'm sure you'll kill it! Fx3 is a beast of a camera lol, just bought one myself. I agree I do think the industry is changing and maybe we will work together one day! Thanks for watching man!!
Really impressive job Carsten!
Btw watching the short film I for sure thought the kid would've handed off the can out of frame, before making the throwing motion, but boy was I wrong 💀. I don't even wanna imagine 🤣
Haha yeah, for being so young the kid had a strong arm. Thanks man !
@@carstenschlagthanks!
Great video man! This definitly gives some insight into the different aspects of filmmaking. As someone who wears many hats myself, this reminds me that anything is possible as long as we put our minds to it and we all make mistakes! I'll deffs look back on this when I make my fist short film! Subbed!
Thanks man! Glad this was useful. Good luck on your first short, I’m sure you’ll crush it!
Another banger! Can you go a little more indepth on the eyeline thing? Maybe make a short showing good eyeline vs bad eyeline from your experience 🙏🏼
Thank you as always my guy!! For sure, pretty much what I mean is, it doesn’t look like he is looking at the cashier because of the camera position I chose. Pretty much just follow the 180 degree rule and you will be fine! Just look up “180 degree rule when filming a scene” and you will find out a ton about it and how to apply it. Maybe I’ll make a longer vid explaining it in the future! Appreciate you watching!
Just started getting into film myself and this was very inspiring!love the work
Thanks man! I’m glad you got something from this! If you have any questions feel free to dm me on Instagram and I’d be happy to answer em.
Great short!!! Came for the grade. I’d love to see the breakdown. Wow!
You got it ! It’s coming soon

Hey, thanks for this video! I would love to see a video talking of the audio production part. Like how recorded the dialogs and how you put together in post. I hope its possible. Thanks
You got it!
Bro great work. Can you please release the raw BTS of the film?
Aye thank you so much! I was actually debating about doing that but I don’t think I have the bts footage anymore lol I’m so bad with file management
Loved this bro! Much appreciated for the breakdown 🔥
Thanks man ! Glad you enjoyed
love it bro
Thanks man!! Appreciate you!!
I learned a ton. Thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Lets go!!!! Love this breakdown
Thanks brotha !
this video deserves to go viral
Thank you !
Was the 4K out of pocket or did your crowdfund? Wanna shoot my first project soon but i'm broke asf lol. I hate to keep postining because of financial restrains but i really wanna tell this story.
Love the transperancy and openness in the vid, subscrbed!
Yeah the 4k was out of pocket. I totally feel that though man, this was the first time I was really able to afford to put down money like that and it was still a little bit of a stretch. Crowd funding is a solid way to go too! A buddy of mine raised 3k for his first film through crowd funding. My advice would honestly be if you really want to tell this story and tell it well. Save every penny you can till you have enough to do it right! Ive made stuff before that I really cared about and was so excited to make, I didn't wait till I had the resources and every time I was slightly disappointed with the results. I truly believe in quality over quantity and even though it can be hard to wait and save it will pay off. Good things take time!!
👌🏻
Thanks dude !
New subs🤯🤯🤯🤯 Sheeeeessshhh💥💥💥
Thanks man !
Amazing work❤
Thank you so much! I appreciate you!
nice work
Thank you! I appreciate that
I just want to see a list of the equipment you used, and where to buy it
Everything we used can be bought from B&H I believe. The main things were, BMCC 6k full frame, Leica 24-70 2.8 photo lens, Amaran F22c, Nanlite Pavo tube 30C, and white pool noodle (from amazon). If there is anything else you are curious about let me know!
THIS IS SO FUCKING COOOOOOLLLLL
THANK YOU!!!
Crazy❤! What kind of film emulation did u use?
Thank you! I didn’t use a specific one but I used a mix of a film emulation lut I made and dehancer to get this look. Appreciate you watching!
Been waiting for this!!!
Thanks for watching my guy !
Thank you for validating my feelings
Thank you for watching!
What's the budget for this? Just curious. Audio seems great, I've read that audio engineers can tell the difference in a single decibel when they fiddle with those filters.
The budget for this project was around 4k. The audio is probably the best part lol, my dude Juan is the best in the biz!
Great Video!!!!
Thanks man ! Really glad you enjoyed it
I want to be an actor in movies, so when I graduate from school, I am going to acting school because it would be easier, I also want to start making flims
That’s awesome man! Can’t wait to see you in a movie one day. Appreciate you watching!
Awesome work 👊🏽 what camera lens did you use?
Thanks dude! We shot on the Black Magic 6k Full Frame paired with the Leica 24-70 photo lens!
Invaluable information. Thank you so much!!
Question: what was the process for securing the location? Did the business have to shut down for the day? Did you pay them?
Thanks Daisha! I really appreciate that! So the process for securing it was pretty simple I had a friend who has worked at the store for years so I called her and explained what I was trying to do and she got the owner on board. We shot this at night after the store closed (mainly because we didn't have the budget to pay a store to close for the day). I offered to pay them $100 per hour to rent the location but they ended up being incredibly kind and letting us use the space for free. This isn't normally how renting locations go lol. Normally I call around to local businesses or go in ( always make sure it's local businesses big chains will always say no) and explain what I am trying to film and offer them 500-600 bucks. Most places will say no but eventually you'll find one that says yes! hope this helps
hello thanks for the great video. will you let me know which app you used for the storyboard?
Thank you for watching! I use milanote for all my storyboards and preproduction. Appreciate you!!
The headsets are the Hollyland Solidcom C1. I have been eyeballing them myself for the last month or so lol
Haha thanks Im horrible with remembering names of things. Can't recommend them enough lol total game changer
@@carstenschlag Mine will be delivered today! B&H currently has them on sale for $424 ($75 off)
Lets goooooooo
Yesss sir !
Are the wide shots made just with the market practicals??
Yup! it was really just about blocking the talent to land where they had the most about of shape on their face. We also did block out all of the overheads behind cam with a wall of black fabric to help add shape as well!
Amazing work!! I am a composer, and I would love to collaborate with you on a project some time. Please let me know if you would be interested. I look forward to seeing more!
Thank you so much!! That’s great to know, if I have something come up I’ll give you a shout! What’s your email?
which camera did you used ?
Pocket 6k full frame! It’s a beast of a cam! Appreciate you watching man!
@@carstenschlag loved the breakdown ❤️
Thank you brotha!
Why is it so hard to add a link to the actual video in the description? You might think it's just two extra clicks, but it's not. It's a lack of a basic user experience. And you're losing potential viewers who don't want to bother clicking and searching for the video.
And I'm not trying to be a jerk. I liked the video, liked the film idea and wanted to see it. But had to move from the phone to the desktop to find the film.
No you make a good point, I totally overlooked that. I will add it now. Thanks for watching !
"promo sm" 😌
Thanks for watching!
Very helpful. However, I would have liked to know what you spent the $4000 on. Crew, rentals, actors? It would give others a handle on what to spend if they have some of those resources already or need to spend more if they don't have them.
That’s a good point! Pretty much the breakdown was $1200 on talent, $500 on gear rentals, $150 on food/ snacks for the crew, like $200 on post production plugins (dehancer), and about $1950 on costume/props/set design. Obviously normally you should pay your crew but in my network we kinda have a deal where we hop on each others projects for free to help everyone make the stuff they really wanna make. Hope that helps!!
Absolutely! So even if you had free talent and all the equipment, you would have still spent $2000 on costumes, props and set design.
That is very helpful and explains why it looked so good. So many prople miss the details.
Really nice work. I watched it right after I saw this video explaining it.
Thanks man! Glad it was helpful. lol I wish I could have put even more into production design. it really is the little details that make the biggest difference!
