The playing is unbelievable. The fact that they not only were superb musicians but also were socially progressive and substantive in their lyricism puts them up there with the greatest punk bands of all time.
They were absolutely unstoppable in this era. Their constant touring across all of the US and Canada during the birth of punk's 2nd wave helped create an amazing network of bands and contacts across the continent that helped the scene grow to huge proportions. DOA's contribution to punk is invaluable.
Yep. First time I saw them it was the Biscuits-Rampage-Gregg-Shithead line-up, and to this day that was one of the top 3 most amazing shows I've ever seen. Just fucking annihilated my senses, and really made me a lifer. Later line-ups had their moments, but nothing could ever touch that whole 1979-1982 period. I practically worshipped Randy Rampage back then and started playing bass mainly because of him. If it weren't for DOA, Black Flag, and Dead Kennedys blazing the trail in those days, hardcore punk would have probably never been a huge thing outside of the West and East coasts.
the only musical movement in america that didn't suck the mainstream medias cock or the music industry for that matter, it should've be called the truth movement.
Fcuk me I'm 60 now , left school in 1978 , straight into punk . Never looked back. It's now a gentle foot tap but the hearts still in it. It don't leave you.
This gives me freaking goosebumps! I was 12 yrs old living in Vancouver when this came out. Me and my buddies started a punk band and D.O.A. were our heroes! Subhumans were cool too.
Slave to my Dick? Did you have Let Them Eat Jellybeans album? DOA and Subhumans on it. Black flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Christian Lunch, and the flip side was mostly weird instrumental, punk.
One of the best. Saw them 3 times. Once opening for the Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks and a solo show. I have 7 of their albums. This video is ancient, where's Dimwit or Sonny Boy. I was a member of the Money Grubbing fan club. Love the cover of Taking Care of Business they do with Randy Bachman. Liar for Hire.... So F@#&ING Great.
I saw them at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto (in front of the City Hall, can you believe it?!!) in 1980. Rock against Radiation. The Forgotten Rebels played too, among others. Really freaked out the lunchtime business crowd! Lotsa punks. It was hot so we were running around in the fountain. Memories!!
TO ME, THIS WAS ROCK N' ROLL. The next day after seeing them in 82'(i was 15) I threw out my Styx, Boston and Eagles records into the Trash and was born again. Thank you Whimpy & Joey, you saved this Winnipeg boy.
I think that was circa 1982 or 1983 when Wimpy (Brian Roy, singer for the Subhumans) played bass for DOA. Out at dinner after the show, I asked Bri why they weren't playing any Subhumans songs and he said "Joe doesn't want to". I said to him "tell him I said DOA has to play Fuck You" and I don't know if he did but it soon became a DOA staple. During the 1980 tour of Ontario when my band Joe College and Rulers opened for them, I said "it's not Disco Sucks anymore, now it's New Wave Sucks" and the very next night and gfor the next few years they played it as New Wave Sucks.
First punk band I saw live! That was in 1980... and I got hooked! What great times it was as I saw the best of the best bands for 10 years straight, probably a 1000 shows, and also bought about a 1000 records.
I was 13 - 14 ? When i first saw this video on youtube and have been hooked on D. O.A ever since . I'm turning 27 in a few months time , how time has passed . Managed to see them when they played in Asia . Joey Shithead as usual an awesome frontman .
Just saw D.O,A, tonight in Fredericton for the farewell tour! Sh*thead signed my copy of his book 'I Sh*thead'. Always great to see D.O.A. may she now rest in piece!
CERTAINLY ONE OF THE WORLD CLASS PUNK/HARDCORE BANDS COME FROM CANADA AND THEIR NAME IS DOA. I'M HOISTING A MOLSON TO THEM TODAY. D.O.A. started out in Burnaby, British Columbia, 10 miles from downtown Vancouver and released their first four song e.p .Disco Sucks in 1978. Their two classic albums, Something Better Change (1980) and Hardcore 81 (1981) immediately cemented their place in the pantheon of world punk. Touring endlessly across the U.S. they brought their incredible live shows to many a small town punk kid. I really regret never seeing them live. World War 3 was included on Something Better Change LP which is one of my three all-time favorite Canadian punk albums. Those were the Reagan years and many punk bands had nuclear war on their minds. They were a trio when this video came out in 1980 Their charismatic lead singer Joey "Shithead" Keithley is a tremendous front man. , Randy Rampage bass and the monster Chuck Biscuits on drums fill out D.O.A. Don't even bother telling me you like punk if you don't like this performance. And after this we''ll see another live DOA vid.
I've seen them at least 15 times and they never let me down. Listening to them now reminds me of how tight they were as unit... Snappy, precise and tuneful! great melodies and catchy riffs. Love this band.
Remember as far as the Vancouver Punk Scene went WWIII was a good three years in to a already vibrant scene. It was an exciting time to be young and headed to the Buddha in the late 70's. Bring Back BudStock, Baby!
saw these guys twice in 1985 on there Lets Wreck the party Tour once at West Catasauqua playground field house and then at the Moose home in Catasauqua Pennsylvania where i lived, this is one of the first hardcore bands i ever listened to and a top favorite, i spoke to everyone of them but dimwit he was not very sociable but they were very cool, i must have spoke with Dave Greg for around an Hour very cool guy!! they all autographed two of my albums for me, both shows where awesome west Catasauqua field house was so small and they jammed everyone in tight still great show!! the Moose home on the other hand was large and i had a chance to slam around and have a great time, Raw Power and Dont Know where with them, the drummer from Raw power broke a finger on his drum-head they where playing so hard he stopped bandaged himself up and finished the show, i found out later that DOA payed his hospital bill that's awesome!!, had a great time wish i could go back and do it again!!
I saw DOA in concert 2 days ago and it was one hell of a show I know besides Joe Keithley it's all new members but they still played a lot of the old songs including this one
I've met Joe Keithley. I swear, he could crush your head with his hand. If he wasn't a guitarist, he could be a basket ball player. Check out how small that guitar is on him. It's an SG: probably one of the largest bodies of any standard guitar besides an Explorer.
EASILY... one of the best punk band that there ever was; smart, impassioned, energetic, not just angry, but fueled with purpose.... so many bands should see this-it seems "dated" now 30 years later, but nothing has really changed (shit-might be worse?) DOA are legendary, and this is as solid now, as it was back when they laid this down!
Man, that Chuck Biscuits sure could pound those toms. Classic US Hardcore, even if it is from Canada. What the The Clash would sound like if they'd actually had some balls.
I love this video, nice and raw. Im from vancouver, I still havnt managed to go to one of their shows, gotta do it before I move. My mom knew Randy from highschool, he was apparently a very intelligent student.
Check out 'Bloodied but Unbowed', classic cover of Mt Rushmore with blood flowing out of the president's noses, basically a greatest hit's compilation, every song on it is great!
my fave gig of all time was hardcore 81(at the laudrymatt which was to become richard on richards years later) in vancouver.d.o.a.with the classic line-up and dave gregg.also black flag was on the bill with dez on vocals.anyway my ears were ringing for day's.
www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/doa-vancouver-randy-rampage-obit-1.4799324 There were a few different news items about his death that I could have quoted, but I went with the CBC News article. That whole album theres a realy interesting mix of traditional 77 with early roots of hardcore its a really cool mix. i really think that whole album including this song is amazing
This line-up couldn't be touched. Rampage and Biscuits were the shit. I got to see 'em when Dave Gregg was in the band on the hardcore 81 tour, but they were just fine as a 3-piece. So many great bands in Vancouver in those days. Subhumans, Pointed Sticks, Modernettes, Dishrags, Young Canadians, U-J3RK5.

Which is why they must've felt like a force to be reckoned with when they roamed the streets with Jello and the rest of DK at that time.

Dimwit was Chuck’s older brother.
This song has more relevance now than ever... the old 80s cold war fears are back again.. this time a hot war
Yup, the message remains the same. While the same fools hold power over all our heads.
