  • I wanted to do an update on this baby boy now has turned one, but I couldn't keep him still enough in a video to film one, so I thought instead I would do a 12 month old baby routine/day in the life video- this is what he typically gets up to on an average day. *Since I filmed last week this he has decided to cut back on his nap time and has started waking up at 5am- I am hoping it is just teeth. ;)

    Thank you so much for not trying to perfect everything. You were realistic about him being cranky and stuff. What's frustrating is when mom's try to make it appear that their baby is always happy, always sleeps through the night, and have 0 obstacles parenting. I think not being real is what causes mom's to think they're not doing a good job.
    Thank you so much for making this a REAL schedule/day in the life. Your children are precious!
    This was a wonderful video to figure out my son's routine coming up on a year old.

    Helpful to see a real routine without trying to play it perfect. I'm a first time mum so was wondering why my 1yo is constantly throwing those tantrums when online you see only perfect babies. So many things in your routine I can relate to because we do same.

    Thank you for this video!! This is the first time I've seen another mum with a 12 mo that has the same mobility level as mine!! She also takes forever to eat just like your baby! I think our babes even nap the same schedule as well!!! (And my hubby works from home) Such a comfort!

      That's often why really little ones get diagnosed with ADD. They're learning the whole world, of course they don't want to sit still. Schools that don't have recess or some kind of PE/movement time report more boys who can't sit still. Right, because they're full of energy. There's nothing wrong with his brain.

    Lovely video, Katie. Wren is doing so well with his routine, as are you. It's not that long since you were fearing the daunting task of transitioning him into his own room. He's a happy and healthy boy and will do things in his own time. Reece, seemed to take forever to stand up and walk, but when he did he was so sturdy on his feet and wasn't a waddler, who tripped and fell a lot. Every baby is different. 💛👶🏼 xx

    I love how you settled him down first before his nap and you offer him milk. I think I make the mistake of taking him to his crib while he is playing because it is time for a nap so he gets quite upset LOL And I like how you really put aside time to play with him. And gave him time to eat a variety of food by the table next to you as you also did your thing. Thank you. I will try to incorporate this into my routine tomorrow.

    • @katie_ellison
      @katie_ellison  7 років тому

      +Arctic Angel thank you. Yes I put him down half awake and he generally goes down fine, although sometimes he gets a little grumpy. We basically started putting him down awake and then if he started to get upset my husband would sit with him and stroke him or lie with him and when he calmed down he would leave the room, and when he did it again he would go in and eventually he started to settle a lot easier x

    I can't get over how different wren looks,he's such a cutie. My son didn't walk till he was 18 months,I thought it was him being lazy,but he over thinks everything 😩. Even now he's coming up to two he chooses whether he wants to walk anywhere,and normally he would rather sit in his pushchair,but take him to the park and he will walk round the play area for ages. I've still to catch up on your holiday vlogs yet. Great vlog. Xx

    • @katie_ellison
      @katie_ellison  7 років тому

      Hi Jessica, I think that it was just a real fluke that he now sleeps through, for the first ten months of his life he was up every 1-2 hours, and then when he was ten months he went in his own room and it just made such a difference. I think they all get there eventually, it just takes them all different times I guess. Ixx

  • @TheHippyChristianMum
    @TheHippyChristianMum 7 років тому +3

    aw lovely. he's so sweet, and Maddy there reading him a story bless. was there anything you changed to get him to self settle as he was keeping you up a lot before wasn't he. my baby is still night feeding at 14months :/

    • @katie_ellison
      @katie_ellison  7 років тому +1

      I think a lot of it was down to luck and circumstance more than anything as at the same time as self settling he went in his own room (at 10 months) and that made a huge difference. But basically instead of feeding him to sleep like I was doing I would put him down half asleep or awake and say night night and leave the room. If he started to cry (which was never a full on cry more of just a moan they do when they don't want to be put down!) my husband would go in to him (never me as he got upset if I went in) and stroke him or cuddle him. He would do that till he went drowsy again and then he would leave and we would repeat until he went to sleep. It only took a few nights before he just went in his bed no trouble. x

    My little boy is 1 next week and I found this video great to watch because your routine is very similar to ours the only thing really different is Parker won't just go down like that we snuggle him until he's asleep, and he's in a sleepyhead!
    But other then that Parker even have the same bib 😂
    Also Parker loves snack lunches too and there just so simple to chuck together and great when you want to clear out your fridge.
    I giggled when you said he's sometimes fussy been spoon fed !! So is parker the last few months he just wants to be independent! He used to love porridge and weetabix! Xxx

I too have managed to train my 13 month old to self-soothe to sleep, and I am incredibly proud haha :D One small remark: are you sure it is okay to leave his tummy naked while sleeping? Maybe it is just cultural, but as far as I know, tummy and back area (kidneys) is the most important part of our bodies to keep warm at all times, well - babies' too. Sorry for nosing, I couldn't help but notice. :D

      Charlotte Mulligan My boy is nearly 7 months and I've switched from spoon feeding to baby led weaning and now he completely refuses to be spoon fed, it's a bit of a nightmare sometimes as we give him some of what we're having and sometimes it needs to be on a spoon but he either screams or clamps his mouth shut! I gave in last night and just let him eat mash with his hands, absolute mess but he had a great time.

    Have you done a video on how you taught wren to self settle ?? if you havent pleeeeease can you, i need all the help i can get, my little girl maddie is 1 next week and i dread every nap/bedtime its just a nightmare night after night trying to get her to sleep she is just so alert and wants to be active all the time,Id love it if she self settled like wren.thankyou

    • @katie_ellison
      @katie_ellison  7 років тому +1

      Oh bless her, it is hard when they are so alert. I haven't done a video on it, and I don't really know how really how much of it was me but basically he used to feed to sleep so instead of letting him fall fully asleep I would lie him down awake or half awake. He sometimes would cry (not properly cry just sort of shout!) so my husband would sit outside his door and go in every couple of minutes and either lie with him or stroke him (I wouldn't go in as he got more upset if I went in). Eventually he would fall asleep. It only took a few days of doing that before he went in there quietly. Sometimes he still does it, but now he quietens down after a couple of minutes. x

    • @cherylfryfry8399

      As soon as they start rubbing their eyes and getting whiney, put them down in their crib, put music on etc. Walk out and close the door. Don't fuss with them in their crib and if their really tired they'll fall asleep on their own

    You're so lucky with his sleep! Jacobs 13 months tomorrow and has been only having 1 nap for months and still doesn't sleep 11 hours at night 😞 recognise wacky warehouse - 5 minutes from us! I prefer Leo's as more space! Xx

      Ah wow you are local, we may have been in hospital at the same time as my boy is 13 months the day after tomorrow. Yes much prefer Leo's too! ;) I tempted fate with this video as he has been waking up at 4.45 the last two days- just when you think you are on to a good routine they like to change it up. ;) x

    Katie, we need to get these babies together. I'd love to see what they are like together now. Daisy would bloody love Wren! He is looking so grown-up! Also love the shots of you breastfeeding - I fed Bill until 18 months and I hope I get to do it again with our third if he/she is able to. Probably jumping the gun a bit as I'm not even trying for a baby yet, but you know what I mean! xx

    • @katie_ellison
      @katie_ellison  7 років тому +2

      I think they would be so lovely together nowadays- definitely need a trip up to the inlaws so I can see you! And I wasn't sure whether to include the breastfeeding shots, but then that is a big part of our day so I thought I would. x

      A lovely clip from you and your little one, and especially the breastfeeding shots .. its so great to show people these moments they will treasure for live. I breastfed my little boy until about 15 month too. And these are the best moments of motherhood. So thank you.

      Oh I am sorry Alison, that was the last thing I wanted to do, make anyone feel bad. :( I hate the fact that I have done that as I know how horrid Mum guilt is. Please don't feel guilty, I obviously have no idea of your situation, but the fact you are working full time I am sure is helping provide for him and give him the best. Sending love to you and please don't feel guilty- although we all do feel guilty whatever we do I think, I have been feeling it for various reasons this week too. x

      Alison Irvine I'm sure your weekend time is really important and lovely though ☺️ I'm with my kids full time, but at the weekends or evenings I'm often pretty desperate to get my husband to take them away so I can tidy up, or give me a break. And I always feel guilty I've ran out of patience to do any crafts or lots of reading most days.. So it's definitely still quality time that's more important than quantity! 😊 Plus because I'm always around mine are far more excited to see their dad come home 🤷🏼‍♀️😝

      @katie_ellison  7 років тому +1

      Thanks Emma for this. I think we feel guilty whatever we do don't we, whether we work full time, whether we are at home full time, or whether we do a bit of both like me. I don't think we can win but we just need to stop being so hard on ourselves. xx

    How did you teach him to sleep? Did you sleep train or a certain program? I am so struggling to walk away from her crying what seems like in fear. I want to teach her she can lay away and fall asleep gently some how so she knows she’s safe and it’s all okay… 🫂🫂🫂❤️

    Wren is so adorable, even when he's crying! He reminds me so much of my little boy, he's a bit of a crier too and tries to avoid his sleep! Luckily he's got much better now he's in his own room, I thought I would keep him in our room for longer than 6 months but I need my sleep and was really struggling so wanted to try anything, he immediately went from waking every couple of hours to waking 3 times a night, then after a week we did some gentle sleep training and he's slept through the night for 3 nights in a row now, I feel so amazing after a couple of night's decent sleep!!
