Cool new Tele kit! But kit instructions only cover most use cases, not all. We still have to learn about and keep track of pickup polarity with any new installation of pots and switching whether soldering or using quick connects. I put an Obsidianwire coil split kit into a Les Paul with splittable mini humbuckers and ended up out of phase in middle position. Turns out Gibson Reverse Wind Reverse Polarity their new bridge humbuckers and changed the wire colors from the neck pickup convention. Online forums showed me the new Gibson color codes so I reversed the polarity into the Obsidianwire connector (NSN on Neck, SNS on bridge) from what their instructions show. Now it's in phase for humbucker middle and single coil middle is noiseless, as it should be. Tons of modders run into phase issues, trick is to understand what's happening and go on from there.
I used to enjoy visitingbthe funfair and playing the game where you drop coins onto a shelf which moved back and forth continually. Every now and then a coin would be pushed off the shelf onto the coins on the lower shelf and even more rarely a coin would fall into the collection tray. That was a change gamer.
They're amazing harnesses for the price, great if you use GFS pickups, I have one in my tele. not as easy to add other brands as there's not a non-destructive adapter available.
what didn't capture well was the low end. it was almost non existent with the 250k, but moving to the 500k it was more balanced with the bass I get on the neck pickup
Obsidian version seemed more open and spacious sounding. What I like about the Obsidian wiring component kits is ease of installation and they look like top build quality. I cannot afford expensive guitars but it's on the pots and switching where cheaper ones usually cut corners. I may well upgrade my Squire Contemporary Tele with one of these kits in the future not that there is a lot wrong with it as it is. Good demo of this upgrade - thanks.
I'm a constant critic of all things on UA-cam but you're absolutely right, this is a game changer. They have a HSS switch that allows the humbucker to have the 500k pot and the neck a 250K pot. I've always hated the normal HSS configuration because it forces you to put a 500K pot on a neck pickup which makes it sound too bright and lacking warmth. And I kept asking myself, why doesn't fender change the pickup resistance when you change the pickup with a switch? How hard can it be? Well it looks like they've done it.
This is especially amazing because even if you were using two singles or two humbuckers you could use the other modes if you wanted your neck darker or brighter or bridge or vice versa. Or is it vice a versa? Or is it visa versa?
Lace are definitely clean & powerful, the red “single” coil measures 17! 😳 I have an HSH Ibanez strat copy, no quack strat 2&4 sounds, all power, Rabea massad bridge 15, SD Parallel Axis neck at about 8.2, so for me it’s perfect……the one thing I will say is the Lace has a very flat EQ curve, again perfect for my purposes, it blends with the others beautifully, but I won’t be playing just the center much, by itself, not a lot of character like the humbuckers, won’t do feed back alone for one thing, despite all its gain, but both 2&4 positions will….try that with a normal strat🙂
My strat also has 2, 3 position switch’s for the humbuckers, so in theory I can do 3 single coils if I want, but mostly I use series or parallel wiring on the humbuckers and THAT Plus no 60 cycle hum is why I chose the lace sensor
In the description it say's H.NECK is the humbucker in bridge, single coil in neck setting...I would thought too that it's H. BRIDGE cause the humbucker is in the bridge...! But it's the other way around if the manual is correct... But your'e setting seem's to work...🤔
Gasp, oh this is cool. I've never considered using a trimpot for the resistor in a guitar circuit. It's not a game changer because the game is still the same. They definitely did up the game though. Edit: I heard you ask if these are used anywhere else. Those things are called trimpots or trimmer potentiometers and are used in pedals very often.
I couldn't pick too much between them, it sounded more like a mic proximity change, which really isn't the point here (imho). As Robert Grout pointed out, the different impedance settings might open up more tones. All that aside, there's immeasurable value for those that don't solder confidently. Great demo Landon, tons of fun.
To my ear it sounds clearer and and sharper and makes the guitar sound lighter in weight if that's possible. I believe you should start digging into capacitors next and then wire up a guitar from scratch. Maybe even ad a mod like a treble bleed circuit????
At 6:55 what are your multimeter leads touching? It looks like you have an output cable on one lead. I can’t tell where the other lead is. Are they both just touching the other end of the output cable?
@@landonbailey I wasn’t even sure “reading copy” was a real thing, probably something I picked up from Die Hard. Is the Schecter pt special better than a fender player Tele?!
Probably if you just woulda changed all the gold to chrome, you would have got a better sound I dunno. You can tell the difference on the bridge for sure. Neck on both sounded pretty close to the same.
Obsidian Wire - if you don't want to solder and want a more modern approach. 920D - If you don't mind soldering and want some more obscure wiring. Both companies are fantastic, I have used both of them countless times now. Pretty much any fender below a Pro II I have gutted and changed the wiring and it makes a big difference, especially Squires and Player series, I mean they have to cut money from somewhere while making a great guitar that is playable its usually cheap electronics and hardware that can easily be subbed out. If you have a 2-point player strat, it's a bit more expensive but the Hipshot Contour bridge is such a massive upgrade.
@@landonbailey a vintage plus for strat. I just like the idea how I can easily change pickups without re-soldering time after time. Especially, if the treble bleed doesn't like the pickups I'm using.
Hmm, I have HSS Modern Player with Seymour Duncan JB bridge, Quarter pound Strat reverse wound middle and Quarter pound Tele neck. It's almost too much power. My wiring looks like modern art of the worst kind. Obsidianwire told me to use a Nashville Tele harness. Not sure since Hums need 500k pot. I should have got a regular Tele. 😩
