Hello everybody, thank you for all the comments. I'm getting an overwhelming positive response about keeping the philosophical/poetic style voice overs, so I thought I would set the record straight. I have no plans of actually changing my VO style. The truth is, I have gotten a fair amount of comments in the past from people saying things like "shut up and let your woodworking do the talking" etc... And if you guys know me, I'm the type of person who likes to reply with quips that further infuriate the commentor. So what I did with this video was said that I read the comments and that I tried to make this video more "tutorial-ish" and then immediately followed that up with a literal poem. My hope is that this will piss off a small handful of the trolls, and really if I can piss off just one then it will all have been worth it :) But thank you call for the kind words. -Chris
Your philosophical/poetic style is what gives you the edge over all the other woodworking creators out there (and combined with awesome design, craftsmanship and film making it really makes me excited to watch your projects whenever you post a new one). Please keep your style, it's what makes you stand out and makes what you do special. I haven't even been close supporting someone on Patreon - but since you seem to be such a humble and gracious person I'm actually considering it. Greetings from Sweden!
Chris Salomone Keep up the good work, Chris. Your style is unique and what many, including myself, really enjoy about your self. The important bit is to stay true to yourself, whatever that may be for you. There will always be critics, as they tend to be the most vocal. Have a great day, Chris!
Chris Salomone ..your work and vo style is different.but you get too philosophical as if you have figured out everything in life. so please continue but don't preach.
I am 65 i have seen and heard a lot, I find your affection for life of great value to young minds, Life is not a mono environment and your mix of mind and wood are of exceptional quality. Everyone is in a big hurry to go nowhere, i find the pace and tone of your voice relaxing, calming and educational thank you Chris
As an amateur with woodworker, i typically feel overpowered with the entire arrangement ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxrYREG3-7f1Aqk9ams3ZESRNzGnfdUtyQ . Be that as it may, this arrangements drove me through with much clarity and effortlessness woodplans. Works i now work like a genius. That is great!
Keep the voice-overs, philosophy and all. It sets your videos ( alone with the quality of work) apart from the rest. The philosophy of the design, is as important as sanding, stain, joints or any other part of the build. This is your video, your channel, your philosophy.
Agreed. We can all see what you're doing and you always say what your doing if it's something that isn't normally done in woodworking. I love hearing the stories about your kids or your friends. It really gives your videos a human connection.
I was just beginning to write a comment about how much I appreciate you sharing your philosophy and reason as you began talking about that. There are a ton of channels with great insight into the build process. Not near enough give the thought behind the seemingly little choices that end up defining a piece. That's why I keep coming back to your videos.
I love your philosophical part! I missed it a bit here. I know it is hard to accommodate everybody, but you don't need to, and shouldn't change, just because people want something different. They are watching the video still, so no matter if you are philosophical or not, you provide something special. For me that special parts are: Your design, your philosophical voice overs and then lastly, your nice camerawork and editing.
Don't worry...I'm not changing. I'll just say whatever pops into my head for each particular piece. Also...I mostly did that so that I could immediately follow it up by a literal poem and troll the trollers. :)
I watch your videos because of your voice over style, the edits and the peaceful and spiritual feel to it. That's what conveys the passion, and that what engages your audience. Personality, humour, while instructing. Stay authentic Chris, there are a thousand instructional videos out there, but only one that is YOU. Brilliant work by the way.
I watch your videos for 2 reasons, your artistic style of carpentry and your unique style of videos with the poetic commentary. Keep up your own style because that's what draws people to you!
hey Chris please continue to put out your videos with your philosophical poetic commentary. my husband and I both love to watch your videos not only for your great woodworking but also for your voice overs, it's great. keep up the great work that you do and don't let anyone dictate how you should do your videos.
The whole reason why is subscribed to your channel was the poetic aspect. The way you edit your videos and do the voice overs makes them beautiful, maybe even artful. It puts you in a whole other category, there are hundreds of good woodworkers on youtube, but I haven't found one that makes videos like yours. Keep up the good work, in the end, this is your channel you can change if you want to, but don't let a small group of people force you to change who you are and what you like to make!
Ignore those dissenters! The mix of philosophy is exactly what I love about your videos, and really I wish there was more of it. It perfectly captures what it's like to actually build a piece, sitting there sanding for 10 minutes at a time meditating on life.
My favorite part of your videos is your voice over and the story you tell. Your wood working skill kind of speaks for itself but the story you tell is what really makes your projects special and your channel unique!
the vo was one of my two main reasons of becoming big fan of Yours. for me thanks to Your narration Ur videos really stand out from the crowd of stiff and kitschy diy tutorials. don't let anyone silence the soul that we admire so much.
There are thousands of channels that just talk wood. The way you wax on philosophically is what makes your channels so unique. It's the reason I get excited when I see a new video.
Dude dont change a thing, your commentaries are a big part of what makes your channel one of my favourites, haters gonna hate, stay true to who you are!!!
I subscribed not because I love woodworking, I subscribed because your voice overs are the best of any woodworking channel I have seen. I love how you don't just make the piece and show it off, you try and find deeper meanings too the project.
Your philisophical/poetic style is what gives you the edge over all the other woodworking creators out there (and combined with awesome design, craftsmanship and filmmaking it really makes me excited to watch your projects whenever you post a new one). Please keep your style, it's what makes you stand out and makes what you do special. I haven't even been close supporting someone on Patreon - but since you seem to be such a humble and gracious person I'm actually considering it. Greetings from Sweden!
Don't change a thing on your voice overs. Those thoughts are one of the things that set you apart from other youtube woodworkers. It's part of your style, of your identity. Those videos aren't commissioned work. It's all yours so just keep doing it if you feel like it. And BTW, very nice looking bench :) #keepItUp
Never change Chris, your videos are different and very original. there are plenty of tutorial style videos but your artistry stands out and we love it.
one of my favourite parts of your videos is the close ups of your table saw kerf just perfectly lining up with the lines that are drawn. something is just so satisfying about that every time, probably just the fact that I so rarely manage to get that myself.
I dont normally post comments, but felt the need to share in the sentiment that your philosophical voice-overs are what set your videos apart. There are thousands of woodworkers out there talking about how to use tools. I care about the story behind each piece. That is what we all should be creating for.. not for likes but for purpose. Tell a story don't sell a strategy.
The poetic, philosophical voiceover is one of the reasons why I come here! I love the fact you take us through your though process from designing to building to life, instead of just "here is how I build this thing". It inspires me to try my own things, for my own reasons, with my own capabilities and (unfortunately) limitations. But I'm working on the latter, as are you. Keep up the great work!
If people don't like the philosophical, poetic nature of your voice overs then there are plenty of other channels they can go and see. Personally I love it and it's what sets you apart from many of the others on UA-cam. Don't change who you are and keep up the great work
Hi, Chris, Just wanted to say I love watching your builds. I in the middle of watching this one I had to pause it to write this comment. One of the great things about your videos is not only the great woodwork and design but also your style of film making. A big part of this is how you are poetic and philosophical in you voice overs. Please don't change anything your style and voice overs draw one in.. Many thanks
Your poetic style of VO is what makes you wonderful and unique, please don't stop. I would also love to see more of your 'let's design something' videos. Thank you
you inspired me to get into woodworking, i started with a jigsaw and a hammer, now my shop is growing and im getting a lot of work, someday not too far ill be a furniture maker... thanks Chris
Your voice overs being poetic and philosophical is why subscribed. I enjoy your videos exactly as they are. Please keep up the great work that your doing.
Thanks for the shoutout dude, glad the leather dye worked out for ya. Gorgeous interpretation of the Nelson Platform Bench. Absolutely love the way it came out. Maple is tough for CNC milling, it burns so easy. I think the painted interior looks awesome. That final reveal, phew. So nice! I need to plan a CA trip this year and come hang at your shop, if you'll have me.
I've used leather dye for, well, leather and often got it on the wood in my shop. I've wondered if it would make a good stain but never tried it. I so appreciate you did and are sharing the knowledge!
I started listening to the Modern Maker Podcast and was pleasantly surprised. You guys have great chemistry and there were multiple occasions where your (Mike and Ben's) dry humor or snarky remarks put a smile upon my face!
I have to say I love the route you've taken with your production process. It is very soothing and relaxing and gives your unique touch on a process that many other YoutTuber's have kept a simple approach. When I put your videos on my 11 month old daughter will sit next to me and just chill out and she seems so interested in the projects your working on. She may have no idea whats going on but, I'll assume she enjoys woodworking. Thanks for that and again stay true to yourself!
Hey Samuel...thanks! That's really cool. I love reading comments like that. I think your daughter is going to be a master Craftsman (or Craftswoman) one day :)
I like the philosophizing and waxing poetic. There's a spectrum with Matthias Wandel, Jay Bates, Steve Ramsey, Frank Howarth, yourself. You all have your spot between straight up how to, and being artsy. You do artsy well. Please don't stop!
Chris, please dont change anything. your previous format was perfect. its why i fell in love with your channel. your content is not only really great, your design abilities, your skills, but just the way you present your thoughts and ideas. its all perfect. dont let a few people who arent used to A+ content get you down. there are plenty of other channels out there that dont have this quality. people can go elsewhere if they dont like it.
Keep the artistic narration coming Chris. Your audio and video techniques are what makes you so much more interesting to watch than most other you tubers. thanks
For what it's worth, I like the NPR-esque narration of your videos. It's different and it sets you apart. There's lots of youtubers out there doing straightforward tutorials. It's nice to have something else to watch.
Dont change yourself becasue people say so, I like your channel how it is. Its different.. Its unique and thats why I love watching what you do. Its gave me tips on doing my own stuff
Really glad that you decided not to change your style of VOs. I really enjoy the style, as its really calming and zen, almost in a meditation provoking kind of way. Plus, the VO style really matches with the amazing music. Thanks for continuing to create amazing content that inspires me to create wood working projects. Thanks Chris!
We like the "poetic" part! My gf doesn't touch a tool hardly ever (by her own choice) but she loves watching your episodes with me! You are insanely inspiring! Thank you so much for all you do!!!!
I like your style. What you do with the wood, how you film it, how you VO it and the fact that you do all these nice things at home around your family. You are not like most of the other woodworkers on UA-cam and that's why you belong in my subscription list.
a lot of people already do tutorial videos on youtube. I love yours because of the way you narrate things, it feels different. also, great video, cheers !
Seeing this video pop up brightened my crappy day. Keep making these videos man. They are immensely inspiring. They've taught me to take pride in how something looks not just it's functionality. The music, editing, VO, design, all that....yes....keep doing it. Love it. Thanks Chris.
One more vote for keeping your style, it's one of the reasons I look forward to each of your videos as they come out. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Keep up the great work, Chris. I think I've watched just about every woodworking video on UA-cam and I am particularly drawn to yours because of their peaceful and philosophical nature. Woodworking is a source of stress relief in my own life, so I very much appreciate that your videos continue that theme for me. And I'm also a Cubs fan, so that helps too....
F the haters man. You do you. Your "philosophical angle" on this channel is what I love about your channel. It's called originality. Keep up the good work man.
I actually really like the way the black inside came out looking, but that's a really personal thing. Another great build and story, Chris! Feel free to wax philosophical as much as you want. -Caleb Harris
Please don't change your style. It's perfect and I look forward to your videos because of your style of commentary. There are lots of woodworking channels out there but your voiceovers set you apart from all of the rest. Keep up the amazing projects.
I love the philosophical side. I watch your videos for you. I know how to woodwork and if I wanted to just see a how to I could read a book. Your videos are entertaining. Half the time I don't even need to watch the full video. I do my day job while listening to you talk. Tell people to get over it. You offer free entertainment to them. And it's great!
About the poetry behind your videos if you wanna call it that. I honestly love small amounts of it, when you tell a story in brief detail about why your making the piece it gives the project a story which is never a bad thing. Just keep details minimal and brief. I love your videos i'm just getting into woodworking trying to start up a little business and your videos help my mind wander. I would never copy a design no matter how good or simple i'd use it as inspiration for something i would like to make personally. Keep doing what your doing i love videos :)
Hey don't worry about people complaining about your style of video-making, it is what makes your channel unique - and what made me like it initially I might add.
To me, woodworking is something therapeutic. It's not like going through the motion of just producing because. You've a love for woodworking which shows in the way you talk about it in your videos. I find that more inspiring and making me 'do work' than the next best youtube woodworker of which there are many these days. Not to discredit some of the hugely talented guys out there though. Your style sets you apart from the rest. I guess that's why you're at 121k subs already! I can still remember the 7k mark hehe. Only by trying something new, be it inspired by or a flick of the mind, may we elevate ourselves to new heights. Keep up the good work!
loved it. the bench is beautiful, as always and always enjoy the narration. I liked how you said "the haters don't want poetry", then launched into a poem 😁
I just made a Nelson bench. Really happy with the way mine turned out. And then I saw yours...wow...turned out amazing. I'm a huge fan of the pattern and the black inside portion -- kind of one part morse code, one part abstract mid-century line and dot pattern. Also, I really like the detail the black adds. Bare wood would have looked great, too...but I think the shadow detail this adds lends itself really well to your pattern.
I love the internet because it's a place to share ideas and learn about projects and the person who created them. On the other hand, I hate how the internet seems to encourage morons to voice their opinions as facts. Make the videos and projects that you want to make and don't worry about pleasing everyone as it is impossible to do. Do your thing and ignore those who posting comments just to get a rise out of you. Love your channel!
Glad you were not serious about removing the philosophical/poetic bits. The clean editing, designs and commentary is what got me hooked to your channel. I never comment on your videos (sorry) but thank you for your work. It's always a breath of fresh air when I see that you uploaded something. Cheers!
The philosophical wanderings and calming fingerstyle guitar are your biggest distinctives. Please don't lose that and end up blending in with everyone else.
Philosophical rambles or not, I like the way present your videos. Your voice is very soothing, just like Justin over at Rainfall Projects. I'll tell you what I've told him: your videos are very relaxing, so much so that when I become a father I'll use your videos as a way to sooth them if they cry.
One of things that drew me to your channel and to become a Patreon support was the video style. I like the philosophical parts of the voice-over, gives the videos a unique flavour. Another inspiring video, thank you.
The bench looks awesome. Especially how you handled the CNC marks - that would've made me go crazy. I like the color choices and also envy your production skills.
The reason I subscribed to your channel was because of the philosophical voiceovers. Your vids are well produced, and you give people a glimpse into how the mind of an artist, designer, woodworker works. I hope you won't give up what makes your channel special because of a vocal minority!
I like how people said that you are being to Philosphical/poetic.... and you ended this beautiful project, in your calm voice, with in my opinion a wonderful poem. Lol. Keep doing what you do. There are others that fully enjoy the experience you provide in your videos. I watch you, Shaun Boyd and Laura Kampf. Not only to learn a project but to enjoy the art of wood working. To many people just want to rush and get to the point to quickly. Enjoy the production, enjoy the ride! Thank you Chris. Your videos and the artists (yeah, artists.. I said it) I mentioned above have inspired me and my daughter to start woodworking.
Still going strong! Love the design! Edit: Please don't change the way you do voice-overs. Love the thought process and design decision stuff. K thanks bye!
Chris Salomone, I like how you said you tried to be less philosophical and go on to describe the bench. Lol got all the haters clinching their fist and triggered.
Hello everybody, thank you for all the comments. I'm getting an overwhelming positive response about keeping the philosophical/poetic style voice overs, so I thought I would set the record straight. Chris Salomone The poem after was not lost on me. Good one!
Chris Salomone Keep up the good work, Chris. Your style is unique and what many, including myself, really enjoy about your self.
The important bit is to stay true to yourself, whatever that may be for you. There will always be critics, as they tend to be the most vocal.
Have a great day, Chris!
If this wasn't already one of my favorite channels, this video and this comment would push it over the edge. Well done on the bench/video!
Chris Salomone ..your work and vo style is different.but you get too philosophical as if you have figured out everything in life. so please continue but don't preach.

Really well said.
Agreed!! Don't change it Chris!
ytbrent2. Absolutely agree with this comment. Keep what sets you apart. and again, Thank You.

I don't. I just like to troll the trollers who tell me to shut up.
Thanks Nan. I won't be changing my style anytime soon :)
Don't change your narrative style. I love your thoughts and stories. I do like that you're experimenting. That's how you grow and keep things fresh!

I like the thoughtfulness in both your projects and your rambling. Don't change unless YOU need to. Thanks for your work.

I'm another subscriber who appreciates all the philosophical speeches. Please DO NOT change to drab tutorial videos. Love your stuff!
Hi, Chris, Just wanted to say I love watching your builds. I in the middle of watching this one I had to pause it to write this comment. ...Just kidding. Anytime man, it would be cool to hang out. Looking forward to listening to your interview with Mike Mark.

DO NOT CHANGE A THING..I love the laid back , quietness of your videos.
I love the way you tell the story. Your channel is doing very well, I don't think you need to change for people.

Thanks Skew :)
Of course! Keep up the good work!
Forget the haters, your stories and perspectives on the pieces is what makes your projects so unique
I like your style. What you do with the wood, how you film it, how you VO it and the fact that you do all these nice things at home around your family. You are not like most of the other woodworkers on UA-cam and that's why you belong in my subscription list.
Don't change a thing, your presentation is different and pleasing. Great work. Great design and inovation
I love your voiceover story telling. A little tutorial, but your stories are melodic and enjoyable. Keep those up. You are unique and I love that!
a lot of people already do tutorial videos on youtube. I love yours because of the way you narrate things, it feels different.
also, great video, cheers !
Please keep the Philisophicalness of your videos, it makes you and in turn them stand out and is what attracted me to watch them.
My wife and I enjoy watching your videos. We appreciate your superfluous poetic banter and musings. Keep it up!
Thanks Dustin :)
keep doing what you do. your voice overs are one of the biggest attractions to your work along with design
The philosophical aspect of your videos is what make them attractive to me, that is what hooked me up.
I love the way the shadows fall through the bench top. Makes it entirely worthwhile, imo.
never stop with the philosophy. your videos are so beautiful and calming
Seeing this video pop up brightened my crappy day.
Keep making these videos man. They are immensely inspiring. They've taught me to take pride in how something looks not just it's functionality.
The music, editing, VO, design, all that....yes....keep doing it. Love it. Thanks Chris.
Thanks Nathan!
Just keep what you're doing. I'm willing to bet it's the first reason why people have subscribed to you in the first place. keep up the great work!
One more vote for keeping your style, it's one of the reasons I look forward to each of your videos as they come out. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Thanks Jeff!
Thanks Ryan...glad you're digging the videos.
Go Lakers!!!!!
I mean....Cubs!!!! Sorry Knee Jerk Reaction :)
I won't Allen :)
Perfect blend of tutorial and poetry. You're doing a great job.
Thanks man!
And it's great!
your philosophical voice overs are what keeps me coming back watching the woodworking is good also ;)
About the poetry behind your videos if you wanna call it that.
What I really like about your channel is you musing on design. Why and how you make things. The builds are of course just as interesting.
Keep up the poetic ramblings! there are not enough channels talking about design as an idea as apposed to just construction.
Hey don't worry about people complaining about your style of video-making, it is what makes your channel unique - and what made me like it initially I might add.
Thanks Kasper
I think the black inside of the top gives it a nice contrast and plays nicely with the black legs.
If I could add, your videos make you who you are. Good job!
These videos are a lot cheaper than counseling and a lot healthier than drinking. I'm not even a woodworker and I've watched every one.
haha...thanks Chris - well put :-)
Thanks Arjen. I remember those days too :)
loved it. the bench is beautiful, as always and always enjoy the narration. I liked how you said "the haters don't want poetry", then launched into a poem 😁
:)
I too like it when you get philosophical and your woodworking is quite inspirational. thanks Chris
The Netherlands here. You inspired me to do woodworking. I love it. Thanks mate!
:)
Greetings from the US
FYI.... I actually enjoy the philosophical commentary... your videos are very soothing and comforting to watch (voice and music) .... Thanks !
Your voice overs are one of the main things that separate you from others. Keep it up.
I actually really like how the black details on the top turned out. You may feel that this was the easy way out, but it really sets it off.
Thanks man!
Your voice-overs make your videos relaxing to watch, and I always look forward to your next project.
Thanks Taylor :)
Appreciate the kind words!
Thanks Brandon :)
Glad you were not serious about removing the philosophical/poetic bits. The clean editing, designs and commentary is what got me hooked to your channel. I never comment on your videos (sorry) but thank you for your work. It's always a breath of fresh air when I see that you uploaded something.
Cheers!
Thanks man....appreciate it :)
Dont worry Chris, i love how you narrate your videos. It's personal, it's relataleable, it's a feature. 👌
Thanks Keith :)
The philosophical wanderings and calming fingerstyle guitar are your biggest distinctives. Please don't lose that and end up blending in with everyone else.
I won't ;)
Don't get discouraged, I do like the philosophical aspect of your videos!
Keep on with your flow its your style. Anyone who dont like it can get on with their lives.
The shot with the moving shadows is truly lovely. Beautiful.
I got it through osmosis from my Uncle who is an editor :)
Nah, you deserve all the credit!
The poetic quality of your voiceovers is the main selling feature of your vids. It's why I'm here.
Philosophical rambles or not, I like the way present your videos. Your voice is very soothing, just like Justin over at Rainfall Projects. I'll tell you what I've told him: your videos are very relaxing, so much so that when I become a father I'll use your videos as a way to sooth them if they cry.
thanks man. I'll try that on my kid...but I have my doubts :)
One of things that drew me to your channel and to become a Patreon support was the video style. I like the philosophical parts of the voice-over, gives the videos a unique flavour. Another inspiring video, thank you.
Appreciate it Alex. Glad you enjoyed :)
I, for one, truly enjoy your philosophical and poetical moments.
You're videos are pure art keep the philosophical voice overs
The bench looks awesome. Especially how you handled the CNC marks - that would've made me go crazy. I like the color choices and also envy your production skills.
The reason I subscribed to your channel was because of the philosophical voiceovers. Your vids are well produced, and you give people a glimpse into how the mind of an artist, designer, woodworker works. I hope you won't give up what makes your channel special because of a vocal minority!
THanks Chris
Thanks man...glad you enjoyed and appreciate the kind words :)
Still going strong! Love the design! Edit: Please don't change the way you do voice-overs. Love the thought process and design decision stuff. K thanks bye!
I won't...I was just trolling the people who hate it :)
Chris Salomone, I like how you said you tried to be less philosophical and go on to describe the bench. Lol got all the haters clinching their fist and triggered.
