As a Brit I can’t help but appreciate that France makes some fine looking vessels. I do think they’re overselling their anti submarine capability slightly given how much they are focused on air defence and general purposes combined with its smaller size compared to it predecessor FREMM and it’s competitor the Type 26, but goddamn if that isn’t a good design. I honestly think it’s such a good design I’m surprised the French Navy are buying so few. It’d make a perfect backbone warship.
Hope to see it sailing the waves soon.
This design was developed along the lines of the new Singapore Formidable Class Frigate, which in turn was developed about 5 years ago as an upgrade on an older French Frigate. But this Frigate ought to be superior to the Formidable Class as it will only be launched in 2025.
@@matthews1082 it is still Naval Group working in the class as the main contractor, though, and Singapore helps.

We French have to thank Greece for insisting on giving the FDI a cruise missile capability: budget constraints were going to have us be forced to do without.
Sigma is better, it can launch 4AA missiles at once while belharra only1.

I think that, Hellenic Navy needs frigates with high technology, stealth characteristics and full armor (air ,sea and underwater defence) . Also, when Hellas sign the contract must thinking the evolution of these ships in future with updating any system. So, FDI, Sigma and Fremm are the best option for the Hellenic Navy. Very soon greek goverment and greek army inform us which vessel choose for H.N. . I trust them that we choose the better solution for the next decades.

He talks about the Belharra frigates being built in Greece, yet all 3 ships the Hellenic Navy ordered a few days ago will be built in France. Probably because Naval group can build them faster (?) and Greece needs them yesterday.. I have a feeling Greece will be building the Gowind 2500 Corvettes in their country, like Egypt is doing now with 3 Gowind 2500's.
France really backs it's own industry. The more French the better the deal, even built in Greece might mean French parts assembled in Greece.
I think that French FDI and Italian Improved FREMM designs are the best solutions for the hellenic navy
both have : 32 VLS - if I'm not mistaken they are Sylver 50s (Aster 15 and 30) for the FREMM-IT and a mix of Sylver 50s and Sylver 70s (Aster 15, 30 and MDCN) for the IDF -, a 76mm gun (the same one) a complete anti-submarine suite with a hull sonar and a variable immersion towed sonar (for the FREMM-IT I'm not sure, but I'd be surprised if she didn't have one) and 8 anti-ship missiles

Yes, the fremm has bigger surface warfare suite (127 mm cannon, 76 mm ciws and 2x25mm autocannons), in contrast the FDI has a higher deep strike capability being able to launch cruise missile with the vls. But both project can be adapted to the customer needs, maybe putting sylver a70s instead of a mix of a70 and a50, they both can accommodate American weapons such as searams, sm2/3 with mk41 vls. So they're basically identical in terms of possible and real capabilities, very powerful ships
The ship is great, but if it could be extended by 8-9m in order to add another 32 Sylver launchers in the middle, then it would be what the Greek navy really wants and it would better every other offer.

hope Naval Group is preparing soon the 2nd Generation of FREMM and 2nd gen of Mistral Class.
I wish that it has an "Americanised" variant that can also accomodate Mk.41 VLS for the ESSMs and SM-2s along with its needed radar/fire control radar aside from the Aster 15/30 options so that it can be more enticing to other foreign navies.
It is either the Mk. 41 VLS (with ESSM and SM2) or the Sylver 50 VLS (with Aster 15 and 30)

Mica VLS can be equipped without using a single sylver. Or can be actually be fitted in any sylver but that would be a loss of space.
Why would you waste the ship with sm2 missiles? Standard missiles have to be launched in pairs to guarantee a kill, Aster 30 is a one shot kill missile….
@@andreactuel7209 not true. The Type 45 destroyer's were built with the slyver and the plan was to leave the space free to install mk41 to allow these ships to make use of other missiles, primarily the tomahawk.

Add to the 3 plus 1 FDIs and another 3 plus 1 GoWind corvettes along with 24 Rafales working in conjunction and with upgraded F16s, and 20 F35s, Greece will become the new naval and air power of the Mediterranean next to France. These purchases should serve to protect Greek borders as well as European borders. A new age is coming.

The truth is that I personaly prefer the Italian FREMM offer, I realy like the FDI but I think its missing some stuff
mainly the 5inch gun which can be realy helpful for land bombardment to support landing craft. The frigates are supossed to provide anti aircraft coverage to the missile boats and landing craft, having a 5inch gun is a new addition to a group, especialy the otobrada one which is by far the best 5inch gun today, with the vulcano ammunition it can outrange any land artillery howitzer
the FDI is able to carry SCALP EG missiles which are a big plus but this comes in expense of anti air SAMs, redusing the ability to deal with a lot of enemy aircraft and at the same time only offer 8 engagements (in an asymetric landing a cruise missile might be an overkill for most targets)
FDI or Belharra is more advanced on electronics and Radar. French give us everything even Naval version of SCALP EG, while the others don't and I think France will be the winner. And the truth is that Greeks like the French and the Italians. You understand what I want to say.

Η leonardo είναι εταιρία μεγάλης φήμης και θεωρώ ότι τα συστήματα της είναι αξιόλογα.
Αν με έβαζες να επιλέξω μεταξύ μίας πάνοπλης φρεγάτας με συστήματα του 2010 και μίας ελαφριάς φρεγάτας με συστήματα του 2020 θα διάλεγα την πρώτη.

Good points; although I would argue that Greece has many islands that could host land-based SAM systems and I really doubt that landing craft coverage is their priority. SCALP missiles on the other hand would be a great deterrent, which I am guessing is one of their main priorities. Also, the FDI's smaller size makes is ideal for the tight areas of the Aegean.
@@zix_zix_zix Scalp missiles are already used by the Greek airforce. Since they dont need to be deployed far away from the mainland equiping them on the ships wont extend the strike range by a lot if any. Greece is not going to deploy these frigates in a foreign sea. The planes have enough range to launch them in the aegean-east mediteranean
@@billwhoever2830 MdCN version of the SCALP has a range of well over 1000 km and is significantly larger than the plane version. I think this capability is a significant deterrent..

The cam er missiles also can help against saturation attacks, while you can use the rest of the vertical launchers with aster 30 against jets and a small number of scalp navals, In the future they will create a beast version with 2 sylver A 70 and 2 A50 vertical missile launchers. I think MBDA said they can put four camm er missiles to one tube. I'm talking only about the vertical launchers
Quad packing 32x CAMM-ER into 8 of the A-50 cells and then 24x Aster-30 in the other 24 cells would be an extremely potent AAW loadout for a 4500 ton ship. Add the 21 cell Rim-116 launcher to that and you've got a world class air defense warship.
@@steamedcream7671 ΥEAP and I dont undrestand why Greeks want scalp naval on the ships. I prefer air defense only in our tubes. We can ask to buy ground batteries with scalp missiles, a good truck can do the job. From Athens you can reach Cyprus with a ground batery, from Crete too . Greece doesnt need to travel long distances against their enemies. On ground is much easier to develop a ground version weapon and at the same time you avoid to lost everything at one strike. Even if a ground battery doesn't exists, French can create one, we already have at our mirage scalps
@Sto So As far as I know, there is no intention to quad or dual pack CAM missiles in the A-50 cells at this point. Fairly certain Aster-30 will be the primary armament of the ship with the RIM-116 launcher acting as a close range CIWS.

It will cost for Greece 900 miilion euros each incuding ammo/surplus, training, infrastructure.
The FDI HN(stands for Hellenic Navy) will have the 4 faced fixed AESA radar SeaFire(capable of tracking 800 targets and engage 16 of them at the same time), advance ESM/ECM, 32 VLS Sylver for ASTER-30 1NT, a 76mm Super Rapido STRALES gun capable of firing the Dart guided ammunition(against sea-skimming missiles, bombs etc) and Vulcano round of 40+ km, Exocet blk IIIC antiship missiles, MU90 torpedoes, RAM blk 2 CIWS, 2 remote weapon stations and 2 sonars the hull mounted Kingklip Mk2 and towed variable CAPTAS-4(the best in its class) with a maximum detection range of 150km and also the FDI HN will have the best ASW helo, the MH-60 Romeo that Greece recently has ordered.

By the time it gets delivered in 2025 it will need an upgrade.But still, this is the best option for greece as long as it carries the scalp missile too.

je suis pas un pro des frégates, mais un pote m'a indiqué que les 3 frégates françaises présentent un défaut: la plate-forme arrière pour les hélicos est trop petite, et en plus les barrières autour sont mal concues. D'ailleurs il me semble qu'un hélico s'est crashé à cet endroit y'a environ 2 ans.
La plateforme est standardisée pour des hélicoptères de classe 11tonnes (NH-90 - MH60). Les "barrières" sont en fait des filets anti-chutes qui sont abaissé une fois qu'un hélicoptère est mis en action. La FDI n'est pas encore sortie du chantier naval, il est dont peu probable qu'un hélicoptère se soit "crashé à cet endroit y'a environ 2 ans".

France doesn't make FREMMs anymore and won't let MdCN on the IT version.
the FREMM FR and IT are very different, so is the SCALP and MdCN.
Finally the Seafire is much better then the current radar on FREMM and cannot be integrated on the Fremm.

The French ship did not qualify for the last tender, more consider Mogami or type 31 arrowhead or Modification Iver huitfeldt for the next ship because we need at least 16 frigates in the 2024 program to fulfill the MEF program and it is already divided into 2 Iver huitfeldt and 6 Fremms and the rest of the interim plan is 8 Mogami class
The French are the most likely to win the contract and I don't mind as long as the germans and English don't win .

It is the best ship of all. But the Spanish Prime minister pissed off Mitso when he visited. So that deal which was good went out. Now the Italian FREMM with 32 Mk. 41 launchers for US missiles is the best with the Dutch sigma second.

Unfortunately it is weak compared to others.
This ship lacks equipment the other ships offer like the STRALES gun system and ECM. Not to mention that belara is the most expensive option. It carries only one missile per cell. The US armed FREMM and the Sigma both carry 4 ESSM missiles that Greece manufactures. The French missiles are more expensive. the only reason why some like this ship is because they are French obsessed. They believe that if they buy this monstrosity the French will love them and give them an alliance.
