Lovely video about - well - home :) A little anecdote you may have missed: You correctly mentioned that merchants travelling through Limburg were likely to have loaded their carriages too full to pass through the "Fahrgasse" you mentioned in the video, which enabled the citizens of Limburg to charge horrendous prices for helping them to unload and reload their carriages, which led to the citizens of Limburg being until the present day (somewhat derisively) nicknamed "Limburger Säcker" (after the bags they carried for enormous profit) by the surrounding locals.
Your Videos from the German Cities are realy nice. I live in the near of Limburg (in Andernach) and i think our Town is also worth a visit. Andernach is called "Bäckerjungenstadt" A Tale tolds that 2 Bakerboys saved the City from an attack of Soldiers from Linz. The boys threw bee baskets on the Attackers. Intresting is also the "Kaltwassergeysir" on the Namedyer Werth. Not like in Island driven by hot water it is driven by carbonic acid up to 60 Metres Also Andernach is over 2000 Years old and is one of the oldest German Towns The Name comes from the roman Name Castellum Antunacum.
Your videos are wonderful, especially the ones where you take us to various places. I remember hearing about that bishop. Love all the music you added into this one.
Mate, love the travel video's unfortunately we don't have as many picturesque villages or towns here up in the North. Looking forward to the next ones..
I came here from your tweet @YTCreators, where I was trying to promote mine. I really like the style: like a big network travel show, but not so afraid to be detailed and erudite. I also watched the Frankfurt video, and the voiceover and other audio has improved a lot.
ThamiorSilberdrache I took the German text at that point from the plaque fixed to the house itself. I'm guessing those were the words in use in the 16th century.
The cathedral has a lovely red and off-white color scheme. I first visited in September 1983, was eleven years old. I've been back about eight times, up to last October. Lovely town in Nordhessen
"Hoffahrt" is an obsolete word for "pride", but with an strong pejorative connatation of "vanity". There's an old proverb "Hoffahrt leidet Gewalt", meaning that vanity leads people to undergo unpleasant procedures or to risk danger.
On 6:10, you translate "Pride" to "Hoffahrt" in the german subtitles. Did you mean "Hochmut"? And wouldn't "Stolz" be better? And the traditional german name for the sin "Lust" is "Wollust", while "lust" is also allowed in german. "Unkeuschheit" is not used very often. A nice video. Didn't know much about the city of Limburg, only about Tebartz van Elst who already became infamous long before his extravagant building...
Great video as all of your Destination videos. However, you may have forgotten to mention that the Limburg Cathedral was also depicted on the old style 1000DM bank note, as can be seen here: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/62/1000_DM_Serie3_Rueckseite.jpg
The Limburg Cathedral is a brilliant example for the transistory style between the romanesque and the gothic style (and it is one of the very view churches in Germany with almost its whole paintings inside). The "gothic elements" therefore are not gothic, but late romanesque. Ribbed vaults are not an Invention of the gothic period, they emerged in the high romanesque period. The six-part ribbed vaults shown here are romanesque. In the German gothic style, ribbed vaults always constist of four parts. There is a simple evidence for this building being clearly romanesque: The bound system. I don't know the technical term in English and I doubt that there is one, because the "gebundenes System" is typical for the German romanesque style. It is a square schematism: The building is developed out of squares orientated at the square of the crossing. The nave's squares are as big as the crossing's square, whereas the squares of the side aisles have half the length of the crossing's square, so their squares have 25 % of its size. And there is another typical romanesque feature: The spire on the crossing. This can't be found in the German gothic style (in contrast to britain). However, there is also something very gothic: The triforium.
@09:13- And again, Germans embarrassing themselves: "Frühstücksbrunch" ... why not call it "Frühstücksbrunchmittagessen" right away, then it's all in there together? ;-)
I really appreciate the hard work you put in to bring us these wonderful travel videos! I always look forward to them.
