Declan is one of the finest singer, songwriter, story teller and musician, our country has ever produced. I´d go as far as to call him a genius! Keep her lit Deco!
I've had the pleasure of sitting in the same room as this man singing once upon a time. He really is the real deal....outshone every other performer in that room... just pure talent. Bless him.... I love to hear him sing
Just listened to many covers of this beautiful song here in UA-cam - in my opinion Declan's version is heads and shoulders above them all with the exception of Luke Kelly's of course. Bless the man!
My god, the last five seconds from 3:20 to 3:25 are heart breaking. There has been some talk on here comparing Declan's rendition to Luke's but I don't think its only us that are aware of this comparison. Look at John from 3:20 on. I could be reading to much into it but he cracks a smile as if this all feels so similar to when he was with all the Dubliners. Back in their heyday. He then looks up at, I think Ray D'arcy, then over at Declan and is hit with the sudden realisation that its not Luke and this feeling of the good old days will pass as quickly as it arose and his smile wavers. It breaks my heart.
John is overpowered with grace and charm . That is what all good heart - felt music does to the soul . If it does this , then you just know it is real good . Pure quality from Declan .

What most brilliant singing and playing by Declan and the boys, I wish I had enough money to buy the most expensive jugs hanging up on the dresser shelves at the rear by the way Declan is now the new owner of this song, he took it over from Luke
I'm so close to agreeing with you. I think we just have so much bias toward Kelly. But if you played both versions to someone who has never heard of either man I think Declan would win out.
Wonderful, probably the best singer out there for traditional Irish songs, but too many other instruments all playing out of sync, plus that old traditional Irish instrument the banjo. Why'd they leave out a verse?
Brother there is only one Luke and I'm not nearly as good as either however im a dublin musician who lived in jamaica for a couple of years and I recently put up a version of this song on UA-cam it's Mr Celtic Reggae raglan road id really appreciate it if you had a listen and would genuinely hope you like it ☘☘☘ missing home tonight listening to this 💚

Declan sings from the heart just like luke Kelly did. I wish he didnt leave out a verse. This song deserves the full version.
Prayers for Ireland.
This is the only version I've heard that comes close to Luke Kelly's, love it!

Have you seen the performance Declan did with Glen Hansard at Sheehan’s 80th burthday bash ? Absolutely fantastic !!

A truly amazing voice

Well done to him. That was a fine version. He isn’t always associated with traditional songs ‘ but he can certainly sing in that style.
Very moving 👍👌👏

Beautiful Declan
I think Patrick Kavanagh would be so touched that his words have lasted and lost love is remembered
Fabulous!
Outstanding👍👍

Pour moi la meilleure version est celle de ma belle irlandaise Sinéad O'Connor ❤❤❤
Great job - second only to the great Luke Kelly himself. Thanks
Declan Rourke fantastic voice all the best timothy Patrick peter rourke

U can't imotat a man not taking any thing from u ur great
He is no Luke Kelly or Patrick Kavanagh but he felt every syllable and made each count
Iontach! Fear maith tú féin.
I like this about the best of the male versions I have heard, although a few by women still fascinate me a lot.
I like this version very much, but I think I like prefer a little the ones that do not draw the words out so long. Mary Black, for example.
I disagree with many on here. I think that this version is BETTER than Luke’s. Declan has serious presence in his voice.

I couldn't agree more
Brilliant rendition and I truly respect your opinion but no nae never as good as Luke’s

He is no Luke Kelly. But is brilliant in his own right.

Ah there’s only one Luke Kelly 🙏🏼🇮🇪💚🕯 But this is a great rendition in honour of him 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
