During and after World War II, many new types and models appeared: the British 9 mm Sten gun; the Soviet 7.62 mm PPSh M1941 and PPS M1943; the German Schmeisser MP38 and MP40; the Israeli Uzi submachine gun (q.v.); the Czech Model 23; and the American M3, a .45-inch calibre, nine-pound weapon called the “grease gun” because it resembled the device used to grease automobiles.
