The song ‘Spring Day’ is a personal meditation by RM and Suga on the grief of separation from friends and family and the loss of friendship. RM began writing sitting in a park in autumn, watching leaves fall and thinking about those he’d left behind when he moved to Seoul to pursue his musical dreams. Suga wrote from the same emotional place as his song ‘Dear My Friend’, which was addressed to a very close friend from his youth who he ultimately lost to drugs and prison. The video takes that universal theme and is very definitely evoking the national tragedy and scandal of Sewol. It quickly became adopted as part of a national movement which eventually lead to a change of government and the impeachment and imprisonment of the previous president. Artists were being blacklisted for supporting the protests so they had to be careful. The BTS members had already quietly donated about a third of their 2015 earnings to support the families of the victims and had met with some of them. This only emerged after the families spoke out to defend them when they were attacked for ‘exploiting’ the disaster. I think it’s important to recognise that the song and video both end with a tentative expression of hope. That’s why it deserves its place as an ‘immortal song’.
Queen Spring day. In December, when army was really sad bc of their enlistment, it charted again and even pushed 2 songs from the top of the charts which ALWAYS are on top in December here in Germany, all I want for Christmas and the theme for „3 Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel“. I Love Spring day. It IS kind of wholesome
I remember RM and Suga said that, when written, it was about missing friends from their childhood that they no longer saw. The Sewell ferry incident was not allowed to be mentioned by anyone in South Korea or they would be blacklisted and so BTS bravely made the music video in order to bring it to light.
I wish people had a better true understanding of Korea's environment at the time. When Spring Day was released, the president had already been impeached and they were moving on with kicking her out of office and arresting her. This was past the time of 'blacklisting'. The streets were filled with people protesting against the government, and you probably couldn't find someone in Korea who wouldn't talk about it. They most likely didn't speak directly about it because it was obvious and because they were showing support, not taking away attention from the cause. They were brave for donating back when it was damaging to speak about it, but I don't think it's fair to say releasing Spring Day was 'brave', at least not when the real bravery were people protesting on the streets and celebrating the president's impeachment openly.
Yes, unlike in America where the citizens have freedom of speech, it is not the same in S Korea It would have been viewed as hate speech against the government if anyone spoke out about the Sewol tradegy. Other songs hinted at the tradegy but for me and I think many others, none of them hit the heart like Spring Day does due to the way the song was openly crafted and then in combination with the video, Spring Day has steadily remained on Korean music charts for 7 years.
@@lunariadynasty3065 this is incorrect. The president had already been impeached and was heading to prison by the time Spring Day was released. Literally everyone in Korea was talking about it. Years before, like when BTS donated money, there was the possibility of being “blacklisted”, but not during this time. Also, the “blacklist” already had BTS one it, the whole thing was just never put into motion before the president was impeached. And it was from other stuff they had done, like Yoongi’s lyrics about mocking a conservative politician from Daegu in Ma City and Am I Wrong. It had nothing to do with them supporting stuff about the Sewol tragedy. Also, be more careful about your descriptions of South Korea. It is more conservative than the US, but it is also a democracy and that’s what they literally went to war (and still technically in war) for. People CAN express their opinions and protest and do important things, I mean they literally impeached and threw their corrupt president in jail, America has never done something like that. And “black listing” is a thing in America too. Ever heard of the Dixie Chicks? They literally were blacklisted for speaking up about the USA’s invasion of Iraq. Let’s not speak down on other countries’ citizens with the idea that America citizens is somehow “more free” than them.
Of course, til this day, they don't say it out loud. But the MV made it clear (3 years later, maybe because they felt the memory fade away) and, in this case specifically, it doesn't change the intention just because they didn't confirm it publically. Army and the whole world understood and remembers. Never forget. 🫂 🎗 💜 (That's why we keep our queen in the charts! It's not an accident. NEVER FORGET!)
I see someone (Johnny) has become enamored with our WWH Jin 😄 ALSO, I HAVE NEVER CLICKED SO FAST. I've missed your BTS reactions. Spring Day never fails to make me cry.
I love hearing people praise Jimin's vocals. He's so special. The best thing about him is as beautiful as his voice is, as beautiful as his face is, his heart is equally as beautiful.
Beyond what Spring Day is, it also is a reminder that art is reflective of the human experience. It has always been and will always be a part of culture and the stories that lead to how things are now (poems and songs of revolution, pieces about change and a new society, etc.) So in a lot of cases, when journalism fails, it is up to artists to tell untold stories and mark them down in history.

The pain in those parents' voices is something that breaks any single soul. As a parent, it is worse because it is too relatable 😢 Film out is also about loss. As you perfectly said, even when the subject is hard, they transmit a message of hope. At least, better times will come. 🙏🙏 Thanks for your joy, your sympathy, for spreading your knowledge in a so soft way, for your beautiful musical "pauses", Johnny! Borahae! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 Oh! It always amazes me how you guys can pick up on the melodies really quickly, esp Johnny who can play them in a matter of minutes after listening to it. I mean duh, you're professionals, of course you guys can do it, but it's still so amazing to me. ❤
RM said his lyrics were about how he missed his friends, how he wishes they could be there to share his experiences with him, and how he's missing out on theirs. They didn't get to continue growing up together and that made him sad, at times. The lyrics do lend well to the tragedy. I usually avoid hearing this beautiful song because it's so heartbreaking.
Really love this in-depth, genuine, thoughtful reaction. Emotional rollercoaster but appreciate the organic nature of your BTS exploration! Love Johnny’s musical interludes and your commentary based on your expertise. 💜
Everytime I watch spring day explain by Italian army.. my eyes leaking especially when i recalled the parents bagging to save their kids life.. coz they still alive that time.
Film Out is such an underrated song, or at least to me. It was released in the same year as Butter. It kinda went under the radar. I love Jin's voice too, especially live. During live shows we can really hear his voice. I kinda get that "cut" reference.
Good morning guys thank you for this amazing reaction! Spring day has a very special place in my heart and I loved the way you addressed it. All the members are amazing but I really appreciate Johny’s comments about Jin’s voice 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

46:43 "You need these moments, too, to give the relativity of why a spring day and hope is so necessary ..." 100% agree, Richard! For the Sewol tragedy victims and their families, I offer the words of an ancient hymn, Kontakion. We still sing this (translated into English) at funerals and memorial services, giving voice to our sorrow and affirming our hope: "Give rest ... to your servants with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more ... but life everlasting."
Kudos to Richard and Johnny for another great live session although this one had many of us in tears not just Richard. Thanks for handling the topic with such care. Sewol Ferry Tragedy is such a scar on Korean history and so many families are still living with the emotional trauma. Our thoughts and prayers go with them on the anniversary Whether you choose to react to it or not, I recommend listening to the So Hee Immortal Songs 2 Spring Day version. It’s incredibly moving to hear the song that has become an anthem in a traditional, Korean folk style, and her voice is just gorgeous. I think you would both appreciate it.
Film Out is SO BEAUTIFUL 😭😭😭❤ Jimin actually has a voice of an angel. Jin and Jimin's voices are especially beautiful in 'Film Out'. The harmonies and layering are both so beautiful too. I'm watching this while being sick too @richard hahaha bts is healing xD truly
The government neglected the rescue, but many fishermen and civilians joined small boats and braved rough waters, risking their lives to search for survivors. Although the golden hour had already passed, there was no chance of their survival, but the people did everything they could to send the children to their bereaved families. I gathered it. All celebrities were reluctant to mention it for fear of being disadvantaged by the government, but BTS created Spring Day and comforted the bereaved family and the people with this song. The president who did not take any rescue measures at the time was impeached and punished, and korean have still not forgotten this incident.
if you notice in the mv/studio version, it was RM who sang the first verse, but in tinydesk it's j-hope. j-hope actually has no lines in the studio version (only hidden backing vocals) but they eventually decided to give the part to him when they sing live. (feel free to correct me if im wrong ARMY, but thats what i understood from research)
I know they said they pick lines which fits them. I think Jhope fits the lines he sings live. But what I also think that Jhope not having a line in the MV could represent the youth that don’t have a voice and are oppressed both the tragedy and still now. It’s probably not correct but that’s just what I think.
There are even more live scenes that cut your heart to pieces...like the one where they line up the parents and grandparents to identify their dead children. The wailing and cries are so so soul crushing...
Thank you soooooo sooooo sooooooo much for this! Reacting to Spring Day and the explanation video (technically a fan theory) by Italian ARMY. This song really was what I needed when I was at my lowest some years ago. This song is SO special to me. And I LOOOOVE the Tiny Desk Concert!! It always puts a smile on my face.
There are so many things that set this group apart from others - and one of them [something you 2 often touch on in your reactions] is the music - listening to just the music tracks of their songs [when one can find them] is amazing too - put their voices and harmonies on top and it's stunning.
They're really good at doing that mixture of melancholy and hopeful, and it really gets through even when you don't know the language or even what they're singing about (when first time listening). It's just baked into the composition, and among the 3 members who are the primary writers in the group (basically rapline) they are ALL. REALLY. REALLY. GOOD. at this. Their songs are just really well crafted, which i think is a rarity in popular music these days *shakes fist at cloud* It feels a little corny to admit this but I still do suddenly find myself choking up or even just outright crying when Spring Day comes on, it just hits me right in the feels. And it's not even the only BTS song that has that effect on me. It's crazy that these young guys singing in Korean can have that effect bc I can't think of any other artist who can do that to me on a semi-regular basis
3 lead rappers and 4 lead vocalists make up the mega group that is BTS. They are so talented and endearing that they are able to shine on their own, but together, they are magic. Film Out is one of my favorite songs, and Spring Day is timeless. Thank you for your reaction!
Adding to your ending comments, I have always thought of BTS as the perfect example of "greater than the sum of its parts". I am relieved you watched the whole BTS Tiny Desk for a couple reasons, but mainly for the breather it provided after the explanation video. Oof. I have come to expect thoughtful analyses from you both and I appreciate the sensitive responses and humanity you both demonstrate. Thank you. And finally, thank you for the extra gift. Film Out is one of my favorites with that performance being in my top 5 live performances for the vocals.
RottenMango dies an amazing episode doing one of the best description and explanation about this horrible tragedy and explaining the Korean culture and all the BS involved with this when all the people on the ship could have been saved. What happened and especially what did NOT happen is so much worse than we know. Was really eye opening and surprising the US Navy involvement. Spring Day, to this day, is one of my favorite BTS songs. 💜
I am so happy you reacted to this. I love Spring Day, but it really puts you through the wringer from sadness to anger to nostalgia, that BTS for you. And I was super excited you did tiny desk as I love to see them live. And when you ended with Film Out, which is one of my all time favorites, i was literally doing thie Snoopy Happy Dance! I am happy you came back to them. Would love Crystal Snow, Tomorrow, and Baepsae. Thank you for you open reactions, we all feel it.
The mix of Spring Day here is the one they always perform BUT it's not the recorded version. In the recorded version Namjoon (RM) does the part that JHope does here. In this song, JHope had A LOT of harmonizing vocals with the vocal line. So to perform it they gave JHope that part at the beginning since what he did for the song would be on the backing track of the song.
Wow what a great episode to wake up to! Glad you decided to include an explanation. It's a lot, but pretty much required to fully understand why we are so devoted to these guys. Film Out is such a great song, and like you were saying, the hand-offs.. They are on a whole other level in Film Out, it's hard to even keep up!
This is the only song that can make me cry every time I hear it. When the man is at the City Council meeting begging for justice did you notice that the people sitting at the table and against the wall are not paying attention to the man sobbing but are looking at their phones. In the song they mention WHITE SMOKE. When a new pope is elected: With each unsuccessful vote, the cardinals release black smoke through a chimney visible from Saint Peter's Basilica. When the College of Cardinals has elected a new pope, white smoke is released to announce that a new pope has been chosen.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You are almost as entertaining and fun as our Bangtan! In light of the heaviness of the subject, you are just very genuine humans! Lol IDK? Thank you for the reaction! 💜
Love your reactions and specially that you started feeling better after listening to BTS . Both of you take care. And hi to all ARMY watching the video.
I'm soooo happy you did this! Also, gotta say it's so wholesome remembering your first reactions in October, was it, failing to recognise who is who and compare it to now, like Johnny actually noticing Jimin's hair colour change 😂 Also, I'm still waiting (patiently, I'm sure time will come) for you to do Lie. And when you do I'm BEGGING you to react to: the song, the lyrics vs musical structure of the song (I KNOW Johnny will be in heaven to analyse that ❤) AND then Jimin singing it live WHILE dancing. Just prepare to be blown away. I love your reactions. Yes, Richard, BTS heals! 🎉
Loved this!!! From Spring Day to Film Out!! All beautiful songs... film out is one of my favorites. That Tiny Desk during the pandemic was healing itself. Thank you
Back again to see this again. I remember when this happened but once again I learned more about this terrible incident from you two and the people in the chat. The failure of the gov reminded me of the school shooting in Uvalde Texas where 300 police stood around doing nothing while the children were killed. Thank you Richard and Johnny for taking on this sad subject.
I missed the live yesterday 😫 Aww Film out ❤ that's my all time favourite BTS Japanese song!! You guys should have watched the MV too its a piece of Art! Spring day song is played every year on South Korea's National Cultural Day, its become an anthem 💜
I really like the Film Out mv too as well as the lives. Your Eyes Tell is an equal favourite or slightly ahead in my rankings I feel. Gets to me somewhere deep inside that one.😊💜

Spring Day is a song that I feel has many meanings and layers, and all of them are true at the same time. It's about a dear friend of Yoongi, it's Namjoon writing about loss, it's about breakup, about renewal, about hope, about moving on, about those who are not with us any more, it's about breaking away from the accepted status quo and seeing that a better society/future/life might exist. The music video goes more into direct references to Sewol, but it also brings in references to Snowpiercer, and The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, and much more. It's a song and a video that could be read on so many levels, and that's why it has such lasting power. It is eternally relevant, and eternally true.

Jin always shines in the Japanese songs. It really gives me an added appreciation for him when I listen to them.
Agree!!!
People weren't getting 'blacklisted' by the time Spring Day came out. The president was already impeached.
Yes, unlike in America where the citizens have freedom of speech, it is not the same in S Korea
It would have been viewed as hate speech against the government if anyone spoke out about the Sewol tradegy.
(That's why we keep our queen in the charts! It's not an accident. NEVER FORGET!)
I see someone (Johnny) has become enamored with our WWH Jin 😄 ALSO, I HAVE NEVER CLICKED SO FAST. I've missed your BTS reactions. Spring Day never fails to make me cry.
Idk why but Johnny reminds me of Chris Martin every time he compliments and talks about Jin.
Jin is extra special when he sings in Japanese. His voice transforms and blossoms.
BTS Japanese songs hits different, film out is my top 1, can't wait for you to hear crystal snow.
Thanks so much for your reactions guys, and especially consideration and sensitivity regarding Spring Day.

I DID NOT EXPECT FILM OUT my favourite BTS Japanese song man I feel hit by amazing vocals it gives me chills I'm happy you did this thank you
Our main vocalist jungkook co composed n co writes this beautiful Japanese movie song....film out...sooo amazing 😍...n soo proud of JK 😊💜💜💜💜💜😍🔥
When my husband and I need a good cry, Spring Day is the go-to song for us. I'll probably have it played at my funeral; it means that much to me.
Jimins voice😍😍
As always, you killed it! Thanks for one more excellent and emotional reaction.
Richard, don't worry, none of us was able to hold the tears back at that moment. The pain in those parents' voices is something that breaks any single soul. As a parent, it is worse because it is too relatable 😢
Film out is also about loss.
As you perfectly said, even when the subject is hard, they transmit a message of hope. At least, better times will come. 🙏🙏
Thanks for your joy, your sympathy, for spreading your knowledge in a so soft way, for your beautiful musical "pauses", Johnny!
Borahae! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Oh! I forgot to say that Spring day is called "the Queen", for obvious reason 😊
Sugas spring day verse was actually written about the same ex friend he wrote dear my friend about, its a beautiful song worth checking out
It always amazes me how you guys can pick up on the melodies really quickly, esp Johnny who can play them in a matter of minutes after listening to it.
I can't watch that again, I just can't. I'm a parent and that's someone living through my worst nightmare.
It doesn't matter how many times I've seen both explanation videos, I get choked up every time.
Spring Day is such a beautiful song. It has so many special meanings.
Jimin's voice... lifts me up, calms me and excites me at the same time.
Great great great reaction! I’m glad you watched the Italian Army explanation. Spring Day brings so much comfort to me 💜
This is why SPRING DAY is still charting. The longest charting and most streamed song on Melon. It never left d chart, 7yrs. It's THE anthem.
Thanks for tbe last song, film out! Love that song!
Arent they all amazing?! They all have their own flavors. Awesome solo, awesome togetger. Perfect fit. 💯💜
Oh my God, how beautiful, thank you for this video, I got really emotional watching it.
the boys sing too much, and I'm in love with Jimin's voice is 💜💜💜🇧🇷🫰🏻
Suga has a great squeak 😂
That he does….
Jins voice touches hearts, it feels close to us when hearing, it sounds personal. Magical Jin 💕
Yahoo, Welcome back to BTS!
Youu will love YOUR EYES TELL live version from same video after the film out.
Loving the appreciation shown to WWH Jin! 😊
Woah Film Out my Favourite 💜
Film Out is SO BEAUTIFUL 😭😭😭❤ Jimin actually has a voice of an angel. Jin and Jimin's voices are especially beautiful in 'Film Out'. The harmonies and layering are both so beautiful too.
I'm watching this while being sick too @richard hahaha bts is healing xD truly
I love how you guys smiled throughout the dynamite performance. You were just vibing with them
The government neglected the rescue, but many fishermen and civilians joined small boats and braved rough waters, risking their lives to search for survivors.
En la versión en vivo, J-hope toma líneas que la versión de estudio son de RM y JK, de igual forma, Jin toma partes de JK
I know they said they pick lines which fits them. I think Jhope fits the lines he sings live. But what I also think that Jhope not having a line in the MV could represent the youth that don’t have a voice and are oppressed both the tragedy and still now. It’s probably not correct but that’s just what I think.
That's a mystery. Maybe someday we'll get a logical explanation. 🤷♀️
he does have lines in the studio version, its even in the mv. and THEY choose their lines no one "gives" them to them
@@bt6248 the explanation is thats how BTS wanted it
There are even more live scenes that cut your heart to pieces...like the one where they line up the parents and grandparents to identify their dead children. The wailing and cries are so so soul crushing...
Jungkook harmonies in Film Out are amazing
There's a saying....Armies are always just one "bogo shipta" away from bursting into tears.
True...💜
@@multistansHeaven 💜
Thank you for this. I'm so glad you finally reacted to their tiny desk performance. I've been waiting for this reaction video.
Film out ....a jungkook masterpiece 💜💜💜😍😍😍🔥🔥🔥💯💜
wow you really had the most insane choice of songs/lives in the same livestream! BTS brings all sorts of emotions out of you
There are so many things that set this group apart from others - and one of them [something you 2 often touch on in your reactions] is the music - listening to just the music tracks of their songs [when one can find them] is amazing too - put their voices and harmonies on top and it's stunning.
They're really good at doing that mixture of melancholy and hopeful, and it really gets through even when you don't know the language or even what they're singing about (when first time listening). It's just baked into the composition, and among the 3 members who are the primary writers in the group (basically rapline) they are ALL. REALLY. REALLY. GOOD. at this. Their songs are just really well crafted, which i think is a rarity in popular music these days *shakes fist at cloud*
It feels a little corny to admit this but I still do suddenly find myself choking up or even just outright crying when Spring Day comes on, it just hits me right in the feels. And it's not even the only BTS song that has that effect on me. It's crazy that these young guys singing in Korean can have that effect bc I can't think of any other artist who can do that to me on a semi-regular basis
BTS Tiny Desk: I love the 70's colors/styles of clothing to match the vibe of Dynamite. These guys never miss any detail.
In Spring Day the first verse is sang by RM in the video but the seme is done by JHope in Tiny Desk
3 lead rappers and 4 lead vocalists make up the mega group that is BTS. They are so talented and endearing that they are able to shine on their own, but together, they are magic. Film Out is one of my favorite songs, and Spring Day is timeless. Thank you for your reaction!
Jin is the power balladist of the group, he needs a good rock ballad!!
I missed yall BTS reactions!
Greetings from South Africa. Found your channel through Dimash Reviews and really enjoy your insight into music. Your reactions are fantastic.
I still cry whenever I think about the Sewol my daughter was the students age at the time of the accident
1:24:40 Forget the pool and let Johny go wild on those keys! I love when he plays!
Thank you! Thank you!
The Rice Squad gave a good explanation of the MV for Spring Day. Thank you for your reaction to MV, explanation and Tiny Desk.💜💜
I’m so glad you did film out!! 🥹💜💜✨
나는 늙어가지만 아이들의 봄날은 영원해...
I don't know if you already watched their cover of Fix You (Coldplay) but it's so so good too
Thank you, guys, for your reaction and sensitivity regarding Spring day) It's a beautiful and sad song ❤
So glad you reacted to Spring Day and the Tiny Desk concert. It made my day.
So happy you chose the Explained by the Italian ARMY for this, and then followed it up with something lighter. Appreciate ya'll so much
I'm soooo happy you did this!
Also, gotta say it's so wholesome remembering your first reactions in October, was it, failing to recognise who is who and compare it to now, like Johnny actually noticing Jimin's hair colour change 😂
Also, I'm still waiting (patiently, I'm sure time will come) for you to do Lie.
Thank you
Thank you guys, i love BTS, i am ARMY from Brasil !!!!! Thank you so much💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Сколько уже слушаю Film Out, каждый раз как в первый восхищаюсь их исполнением.
Спасибо за реакцию.
С нетерпением жду новых видео 💜
Back again to see this again. I remember when this happened but once again I learned more about this terrible incident from you two and the people in the chat. The failure of the gov reminded me of the school shooting in Uvalde Texas where 300 police stood around doing nothing while the children were killed. Thank you Richard and Johnny for taking on this sad subject.
I missed the live yesterday 😫
Aww Film out ❤ that's my all time favourite BTS Japanese song!!
Some other very good performances by them are:

Life Goes On MV BTS
Proof Live is my favorite 💜
BTS are simply the best . Greetings from Tricity in Poland :-)
