I've had Pigments since v1 but honestly I haven't done all that much with it. But I have to say, this is by far the best intro I've seen. Great job explaining the overall layout of the synth. Now I'm motivated to actually use Pigments!
I have pretty much everything Arturia in terms of software and they haven’t disappointed me. The V-Collection is fantastic as it is basically having a legendary synth museum all inside your computer. No real estate or maintenance issues and, even at full price, it’s ostensibly a steal. Pigments can be seen as the ultimate dream synthesizer where there are elements that evoke classic synthesizers and yet can do new things (or at least go beyond a particular one). The FX Collection started out as a kind of V-Collection but with console/rack gear but has added some effects that are more like Pigments in that they are new or dream effects. It’s great to have these videos that explain this software so you can take advantage of what they can do. Nice job, sir =]
@@jefgibbons I think you'll really get a kick out of the V-Collection, especially if you are a fan of any particular synthesizers/instruments that you may have always wanted to own but never could for whatever reason. But they have also added functions to all of them that makes it a tasteful revision had these instruments continued in some form. Oh and their DX7 ... *much* easier and *much* more intuitive to program.
Jef, fantastic tutorial, very well structured and delivered. I learned a lot about Pigments (you made me wanna buy it now!) and soft synths in general. After watching your video I watched many more and yours is the best. Great job!
This is a great peace of software and you have an excellent and clear way of explaining Jef. Thank you for this and I'm gonna watch your synth basics video straight away!
Wow! Once I clicked on the video and saw 51 mins... I said no way I will watch an hour long video... but guess what.. just finished the whole thing and I didn't even realize it. Well done Jef and thanks for such a detailed presentation.
I have been using pigments since it came out and I have not stopped (addicted)... its my desert island vst. I can make all the techno sounds I want from pigments 2.I use my mpc studio mk2 and it responds to polyphonic touches and adds different level of control. Pigments imo is the best overall swiss knife plug in.
This is really good stuff. I'm only 1/3 the way through so will have to catch the rest later. Pigments is also part of Splice's Rent-To-Own program, where you get the full version and pay off over time. I just bought it after watching this, so will be great to follow. As always, top video. Thanks!
Nice! Yeah man, it's just a sweet sweet synth... Making the video forced me to really dig in, and I can't wait to get making patches on it. Make sure you download the demo, I think it's good for a long time too!
Great software. Especially for combining different samples or your own cool melodies and manipulate them any way you want.:D Top program and i got it for 49 bucks, cuz i bought V Collection 7 earlier hehe. Happy costumer. Cool review.👍👌😎
Excellent overview of this synth. My first experience with granular synthesis was with the Native Instruments "Splitter" in Reaktor. Although Pigments has much more flexibility to manipulate the sample. Especially with the modulators!
Brilliant synth, great video. Many thanks! Really wish they would add per-section presets, so you could save and load entire effects racks, or modulation, sequences, presets for individual oscillors and FX... That's really the only thing that still makes me dream of upgrading someday to VPS Avenger.
Hello Jef, thank you for your videos. Is the NI KK MKII a solid keyboard? Is the Pigments 2 plugin a NKI compatible for use with the native instruments série S Thank you.
Thank you for this. Great into to Pigments 2. Liked and subbed. And may I ask what that gorgeous large screen is? I am wondering what to use as a main monitor.
Hi Jef thanks so much for this review :) What is your opinion about the Sample Engine in Pigments vs Form by Native instruments (if you could do a review about this one too and Portal by Output it would be awesome !). Cheers from Canada ;)
Just found this while thinking about getting Pigments 2 in the 50% off summer sale. Did you ever do the follow up videos? I can't see them on your channel.
I get audio break quite often. To be more specific, if you press more than two notes at a time, you can get an audio break for sure. I am using Core I7 8th generation intel processor with 12GB RAM.
Nice overview Jef. I picked up Pigments 2 with a Christmas special but haven't really touched it. I'm digging in now. An aside... a couple months back you started using the large monitor as a trial. How are you liking it? A few years back a 27" seemed huge! Not any more. I'm thinking larger now to give my tired old eyes a break.
It’s a weird thing... hard on the neck to look up so high, so sometimes I have to arrange things so they’re lower on the screen... ideally you’d want the tv as low as possible. It works great for my UA-cam videos, but I actually think a superwide 42” monitor would be better for ergonomics!
@@jefgibbons Thanks for the reply. Moving your head instead of just your eyes causing neck strain. Possibly the wide 42" would be the sweet spot. I'll check a couple out.
Thanks for this video, it's been very helpful to me! Question: I see that your pigments 2 GUI also displays the mod wheel as being fully low/down on each preset. My pigments 2 does this as well, and I've concluded that the mod wheel is actually in its lowest position because when i move my physical mod wheel on my hardware, it shows accordingly. Is this normal?
thank you so much for this video ! one question regarding assigning midi. i have a standard novation launchkey 49 controller and im trying to control the cut off of pigments on one slider of the midi keyboard and also the cut off of u-he Diva on another. im just not able to get my head around doing this. ie: im not able to control 2 different vst parameters at the same time . help please? thanks . im on cubase 10.5 pro :)
when i first opened it in ableton it took so much seconds to load that i wanted to avoid this synth but its that powerful that it can eat up my cpu anyday
You might look into getting a new, faster hard drive. My hard drive was dying and I didn't realize it until I purchased Pigments and started using it with Ableton. I had to bring my laptop in to a good repair place for other reasons, and the new drive has helped tremendously with the CPU issue you describe.
Hey Jeff, silly question but what chair are you using? I've been through several and as I'm sure you know when you're spending hours in the studio it really starts to take it's toll on the back.
if I were in the office and not confronted with a lockdown I could give you the brand right away as there is one left. Those chairs are being used since nearly 15 y especially in music studios (when you watch reviews on youtube or even in printed journals). But be aware that if there are open windows/doors behind you and you sit in the draft it can hit you right in the back as there is only mesh. That is why I stepped back from using such chairs. But maybe I can ask the janitor to check on the brand. Might take a while these days :-)
@@jefgibbons Thanks Jeff, I really appreciate it. On their site now and man you weren't kidding about not being cheap. But every mix engineer and producer I've seen seems to be using those chairs so obviously it's worth it.
What pisses me off in this synth is the steppy behavior of various knobs (cutoff, pulse width etc.) when you crank them with mouse. Especially prominent in the VST3 version but also present in AU and VST2. At least this is happening in Live 10. No other soft synths I have produce this annoying steppy sound when doing filter sweeps
This stuff has been getting exponentially more boring every year since 1989. Kids, if you are playing 10 minute loops of minor9ths, throw your computers away. Software synths are horrible.
What's even more dope is the orange Adidas warm up.
Thanks man, it took some digging to find it...
Lol
Nice colour matching with the Microlab.
Not gonna lie. I clicked this Pigments review out of a bunch of others, because of that orange jacket.
22:39 BT an absolute synth and computer music legend. Love his stuff since the late 90s. An inspiration for sure with me too 👍
This is the best presentation of Pigments that I've ever seen or read. Really great job. Pigments is amazing. Thanks!
Fantastically detailed review. Thanks so much, Jef.
Thanks Thomas! Glad it helped
One of the most aesthetically pleasing studio's i've seen! Great job

As A historical point, the MORPH feature looks a lot like what Ensoniq called Transwave. Interesting to see someone returning to the older ideas.

Is that monitor a 4K tv? I’m thinking about using one.
Great video...Thanks! What's the monster size monitor you're using?
this plug in does not recognize my midi under settings in the top right at all and will not play out....how do you do this?
What is the monitor that you are using? That's quite large...

thanks a lot
