In US news and current events today, NYC-based researcher and interdisciplinary designer Charlotte McCurdy is making carbon-negative plastic, including plastic apparel, from algae. After many trials and errors she finally figured out how to turn marine algae into plastic for apparel. Once she collects the algae McCurdy returns to her laboratory in Brooklyn where she then adds plasticizers and uses a heated water bath and custom glass molds to create and form the plastic.

Ugh this would be so great to have this replace plastic, especially if it's biodegradable so if it ends up in the ocean it can just dissolve.
Not if it can’t be injection molded. The uses for this are actually quite niche.
@Angello! R. algae farms, we can easily make those and not affect the eco system that much. If building are made to grow them and not interact with the sea life with the farms, than we good.
Youre trading one environmental polluter for another by switching to algae

Maybe sea turtles can eat plastic without it being bad.
the better alternative is seaweed bioplastic. it disolves in hot water and you can eat it
This is a true breakthrough. However, most countries need to encourage proper disposition of their trash and recyclables.
How long does the algae plastic last?
Wow, this just cleansed my soul.
she's amazing 🥰
I need the tutorial on how to make the bioplastic. Her bioplastic is a success!
Imagine if the fashion industry were to take this by storm. That would be amazing!! 🌎
Does this decompose like plastic?
This could be a really interesting invention... provided it can be developed and not blocked by larger companies
My only question is : Is it bio degradable? Because I don't see the need to make plastic out of algae if we keep polluting the ocean with waste plastic.
And even worse, taking massive amount of resource from it (if it is ever produced at larger scales)
It’s biodegradable for sure, only made with algae, a bioplasticiser, such as glycerol or even honey, and water
How does this algae plastic degrade?
Around 2-3 years so its quite long lasting and not in centuries
Please make this available asap so that I may all of my plastic artwear designs into reality and help our world 🌎, thanks for posting this revolutionary break through! You are loved!
Can you please tell me what algae was used specifically?
Give her a noble prize!!!!!
She will be a hero. In fact, she *is* a hero.
Very very impressive thank you 🙏🏼
Random fact, i’ve also recently read an isekai manga that makes plastic out of slime
Name please?
Interesting.. Does this textile disentegrate in water? because i wanted to know if you machine wash it if it will get destroyed
I'm still trying to figure why do you need plastics?
To make PPE
@@lizyliz970 well I hope it actually keeps bacteria and diseases out before it biodegrade! How long that plastic last?
Brilliant! 👏
When you don’t like your clothes anymore, you can toss it in your garden to fertilize your veggies
Ma'am can you please give me the link to make it in my algae curtain project I am a phd student.
If she could do this alone, imagine what could be done if there was funding, a political will to create other such carbon negative products.
Im ready to invest in her.
great work... do algal plastic is biodegradable?
Totally brilliant! thank you
That's amazing! Question, can it decompose?
Yes, she at one point states that she put a layer of wax on it to protect it from water. Why, other then biodegradability, would she do that.
What species of algae it uses
She can sell that raincoat down in SoHo for $900.
I wish i knew which exact plasticizer..
Glycerine
How do you know
Turn plastic into algae... then get back to us. 🥴
does anyone know her exact recipe? and where to get the plant based wax?
She is a superhero 🦸♀️
I’m interested: Would you have said this if a man did this? Or is it just because she is a woman?
I think she is smart, clever, innovative and an asset to society.
Gregory Ashton I don’t care if it was a man or a woman who discovered this it’s just amazing what humans can do.
Just to let you know most people think anyone that calls anyone "queen" is obnoxious and irritating.
Queen Of everything But you wouldn’t have called a man a “superhero” for doing the same thing.
This woman can make PPE. So cool.
But what are the Plasticizers? plant based? any toxic chemicals involved in manufacture of them?
True hero 😊💙
Plastic izers ?? What are these ?
I think it means they make materials "plastic" as in malleable and bendy.
Organic plastic?
Awesome
It’s sustainable yes, but what is time frame in which it composts?
If it’s under 5 years it’s better than any petroleum plastic.
This gives me hope ill grow up in a healthy world
Fascinating, she should draw more scientific community in the loop, at the same time investments.
10 years is too much as per the present condition of our planet. It should be as soon as possible... preferably immediate
Which palstisizer tell me
Which brand of mask is that?
yeah, but who wears plastic tho.
Plastic raincoats is a thing. That aint the problem tho. The problem are single use plastics.
I have an entire artistic clothing line I'm starting based off of plastics that I refuse to release that would blow your mind and soon I can without being a world futuristic enemy, an environmental destroyer, these designs will be revolutionary thanks to her!
Hi 👋 Vitalika
is it biodegrabale, in how much time it will degrade?
No materials should be made that can't biodegrade.
Is this a 100% plastic free ?
So mine we mine algae and destroy eco systems so we can have plastic
....algae is a plant?
now the ocean ecosystems will be destroyed to make algae
I am just searching for non-petrol plastic alternatives because my country simply does not have much oil deposits, and its new Constitution, at best, will probably close free commerce with the exterior.
Question can she grow the algae in a lab instead of harvest it from the sea.
Arson B she demonstrates the process in the video
@@tobolitocogito but did it say where the algae came from?
Its said she harvest it from the ocean so commercial use would destroy ecosystems just seeing if I follow.
Amazing and also she looks like a 30 yr old 9 yr old
Algae is very inefficient at photosynthesizing. It requires huge amounts of water compared to other plants.
you're wrong
@@reedrichards8677 No I'm not.
@@bremCZ you are. if you paid attention at the beginning of the video you'd realize she said theyre the most efficient at photosynthesizing.
@@reedrichards8677 If you paid attention you'd realise my post is disputing that. It was incorrect to say that algae is efficient at photosynthesizing, because it isn't.
@@bremCZ other researchers are disagreeing with you as well. give me a source suggesting you're right.
Ayo yo
People buy this? you would have to pay me to wear it.
ah a break
🤟🏾🤟🏾🤟🏾🤟🏾

What’s on her neck?!?!?
This is way overrated. It isnt the same. Calling it plastic is misleading. More like lowgradebiomass. Nice Sinceproject, nothing more
Random fact, i’ve also recently read an isekai manga that makes plastic out of slime
