What a great explanation of how to ID parasols. You should consider writing a field guide! Straight to the point of identification and differences between edible and not. Good stuff that I wish more people would watch (and I hope they do!).

Thank you so much! I make mushroom illustrations so I’m kinda trying to figure out a book project that incorporates that work. But then I get all distracted by this mushroom hunting habit

@@anna-identifies-mushrooms Lol, that does happen! That would be really cool to create a book with your own illustrations. If you do it, be sure to let us know!!

@@anna-identifies-mushrooms I know what you mean. I love to draw and paint too, but were I to do a whole books worth of illustrating that alone might take me 27 years, let alone writing the book itself! I do hope that you do it though. So many field guides just aren't the best and your style I think would be very welcome to a lot of people!

Thanks for this! These past rains resulted in a dozen or more of the false parasols in my yard. Subbed.

Awesome video! I would definitely benefit from a field mushroom guide. I haven’t really encountered a comprehensive video yet

Thank you! I had a ring of several parasols grow in my yard last year but was too afraid to eat them. I will have to check to make sure the spores aren’t green if they come up again this year.

Congrats on great video of what I think is the best tasting mushroom. I Suggest for people to grill it. Where do you find them there? Here in Michigan I find them alongside trails in poor-soil oak and pine woods.

i find them in light forest - at the edge of them typically or in clearings. since they're not mycorrhizal i don't have good "spots" per se. There's not terribly common in NC - I usually find them 5-6x/year, and I'm out a lot

@@anna-identifies-mushrooms I was surprised when I heard they were decompsers because I almost always found them around oaks. The other times were in aspens. May have something to do with what's in that poor sandy soil they like.
Your description method is very thorough.

Will Parasols that are not edible definitely grow in grass or is the edible likely/ possible to grow in grass… in sunshine? I have white filled Parasols but the flesh turned brownish when cut, and spore print is creamy white.

i have found edible parasol species in grass, in full sun. far less common than in partial shade near trees, but i def see it from time to time. the brown stain is curious and definitely an important ID feature,
