I know this girl and her family as I have interviewed her myself for our video project. Children are not the ignorant ones.

@alexbalerdi Absolutely! I know this girl and her family and have interviewed/filmed her for one of our videos. She is truly passionate about the subject as were all the kids we interviewed for our project. They are not the ignorant ones!

Thank you for such an amazing inspiration. We are starting our transition town in Hollywood Florida and this has been very helpful. Blessings to all of you involved in making this world a better place!

I'm fascinated about transition towns, and passionate about permaculture. What I don't understand with the very positive idea of local resiliency, is (in context of local currency etc) how do you economically afford to trade *natural resources* unavailable to your local community, if the only places that source these materials are very distant? how do you disassociate your economic system from new york if the metals&minerals used in your solar power system are sourced-produced there?

Does someone have the transcript to this?

In permaculture design philosophy, like in any ecosystem, every element of a system should have multiple functions to serve, and every function in the system should have multiple parts playing that role.
These ideas, to me, have less to do with dismantling and replacing current systems, and more to do with cultivating all possible solutions to various human processes. It is about diversity on every level. There is no reason we can't have multiple, very different forms of economies coexisting.

How to say a lot without actually saying anything at all. What changes are you proposing to make and what individual rights are you going to take from people by doing it?

No one can possibly know what proper balance of how many of which types of economies would optimize society.
A gardener cannot know which seedings will thrive and which won't. And, it would be unwise to attempt to plan around the best guess. Good design is observing and tinkering endlessly.
Transition is not a new model for civilization. It is much better than that. Transition is a community with tools and encouragement to try out and discover new pieces of models, and to share our findings.

Actually I've changed back to incandescent light bulbs after being made sick by energy saving fluorescent bulbs. The latter actually use up twice as much electricity as their wattage denotes as I found by using an energy meter. You don't need 100 watt light bulbs anyway. 60 watts is adequate. That's the mistake we were making when we were using incandescent light bulbs.

I got the CFL's for free. Anyway I'm sticking to incandescent bulbs.

'Keeping talking to people' says it all. Talking talking talking and not doing. Transition cities take years to be set up because of all the bureaucracy and consciousness raising involved. In the mean time you could have planted a few trees or set up an aquaponics system. Happiness isn't about getting together with complete strangers but about close friends and family and being an individual.

It's true that not everybody wants to be or work with people 24/7 bút these cities do not have to take years to set up. Keep it practicle and just start. Consciousness raising is part of the deal and that should made fun. :-)

Stop buying the cheap Dollar store CFL's. Go to Home Depot, buy the Philips or GE & try again.

@TransitionMalvern That's because it's easier to brainwash them.

Like if you're fed up with plastic carrier bags being pushed onto you in shops you simply refuse to accept them and carry an old plastic carrier bag or two around with you rather than start a campaign to turn your town or city into a 'plastic bag free' town or city and have endless meetings. When people see you acting they are quite likely to copy you and then store assistants will get sick of customers refusing plastic carrier bags. Thii how change happens.

Wrong. Behavior responds well to consequence. Simply charging a nickel for a bag has led to mass adoption of reusable bags practically overnight. This is a direct result of bag free local initiatives and ordinances.
