@@andreichetan4694 FF VII Remake took 5+ years and that was just part one but it ended up being great. Let's hope it works the same way. And since they already built the foundations with this one, Gothic 2/3 remakes could eventually take a lot less time to develop,
Global Illumination is the sum total of all available light-sources that affect a scene. This can include direct lightsources, indirect light bouncing off other objects and purely baked light information such as emission. Environments that require to be illuminated by multiple light-sources (like a cave for example) tend to look better with Global ilumination on due to the various lightsources interacting with each other. A blue and red light will blend purple where they intersect for example if GI is on. Most "surface world" areas however use mostly one lightsource (the "sun") iwhich tends to be emulated with a single direct light. Since most engines allow for directional lights to have realtime ray bounces rather than requiring lightmap baking GI is less notcieable in such a scenario.
I really like your point on the outcry for gameplay. Devtime was always an issue for gothic and espacially in todays time, when one unfinished game after another gets released, I'd like a complete, finished and polished gothic, no matter how much time it takes.
Thank you so much for the words in the beginning... Like holy crap, the amount of people I see on social media demanding to see footage and a set release date right now is infuriating. Just give them time and at least some trust, there's so many dedicated and invested people working on this remake, even people who worked on fan favorites like Archolos. I don't know IF it will be worth the wait, but I'd rather have 6 years of waiting time and get a beautiful product than waiting 3 years only to get a half-assed remake.
But also, the online community of Gothic (especially on Reddit) is so vocally negative, it's honestly astonishing. I've seen so god damn many comments stating that the remake will be a failure, just because the VERY EARLY and EXPERIMENTAL gameplaytrailer from over 4 years ago didn't convince at all. Alkimia has repeatedly stated that they essentially scrapped everything from that trailer and remade it from scratch. Yet, some people are still complaining because of an outdated 30-minute trailer... And don't even get me started on people whining about the monster designs, urgh...
I really hope they restore the content cut from the original game in their remake, stuff like underground orc city, abandoned mine, tower of mists and, maybe, add some interesting things from the original beta version. Hell, I don't mind if they add new forth camp - both fort and ruined monastery are amazing locations for that.
Bro, global light means that one light source affects all the near elements. Let's say, a torch. Everything near the torch will be lighten and therefore cast a shadow. Great review. Mine is uploading right now and the other thing only you and I know about it is coming tomorrow. Big hug.
All the things you describe would work if GI wasn't enabled. so no, that's not the defining feature of GI. GI simply describes the sum total of all lightrays reflecting and refracting in a scene and these two words are crucial to understand the concept. In other words a lightray emitted by a lightsource is not "swallowed" by an object on first contact but bounces off and travels to other objects, picking up additional info with every bounce. That's the defining feature, not whether or not a lightsource casts a shadow or not.
No matter how good the remake will be, it won't recreate that feeling I had when I played the original Gothic more than 20 years ago. Back then, open worlds and fully voiced dialogues were something quite new, today it is standard.
I'm not so sure about that... I played Archolos 2.5 years ago, and the feeling was exactly the same as playing the original Gothics. There's a lot more to those games than just an open world and fully voiced NPCs. And THAT is what I and many others are hoping they can capture with this remake.
I’m afraid the dated graphics actually played a large part in the feeling you’re talking about since they allow your mind to “fill in the gaps,” so to speak.
Heightened realism is definitely what they should be going for. We begin the whole series as just a guy wanting to survive and only later on we start to discover that we're a part of some prophecy. The original had it with the way they've portrayed monsters. They looked like just some kind of an animal and not a hellspawn. That's probably why the bloodfly got such a backlash from the community when it was presented. I do hope that they'll keep this style for the future remakes, if we get any, and lean a bit less towards the high fantasy as it started with Gothic 2 and escalated in 3. About the video itself: It's nice to see that the visibility of the text improved and i hope that just like Alkimia with the game, you'll take your time with your next iceberg. We'll be waiting patiently as you're doing an excellent job with your vids. Work like that just a couple more years and maybe they'll let you join the Shadows 💪
I think the sentence will it work in the current time means more like game design. E.g. no quest markers. Might not work in the current time where u better have an option to pay not to need to play the game at all. Modern gamers need more handholding or at least the masses they want to milk need more handholding bc they used to skip the dialog and need a Dopamin kick fast and often.
I never played any Gothic game, so i'm looking forward to playing Gothic remake. The devs can take there time and fix and polish the game not spending another $89.99 CDN for a broken boring Starfield game.
"if this would work in todays world" Gothic color palette and atmosphere is generaly dry and dark, but still in itself original, rich and interesting - its freaking hard to do, to work with such a style and things that are hard and risky, arent really a NORM of todays world GAME PUBLISHERS ^ ^ there definitely are some who would give money for a Fortnite/Gothic horror baby.
"We finally see it" - See what? I don't see anything new here. This game is going to bomb hard. Don't be mad at me for trying to warn you. They'll keep your hopes high up, waste your time waiting and at the end it will be a massive slap in the face. The signs for that are already showing.
"and Dragons unfortunately" Lol 😄 There is no place for them in the Gothic world, sure thing. But I think if they will make a sequel they put dragons into it because of classic... Sadly
as a long time gothic fan, I think the remake new camp soundtrack misses too much from the original soundtrack vibe, I want the music to be better, longer improved version of old tracks, with new music aswell.

I really wouldn't mind political correctness influencing the game design a little bit, as long as it fits the setting. I don't think the developers should bend the knee to bigots who cry about "wokeness" and who can't grasp parts of speech. Also, I fully agree with the notion that Alkimia should get all the time they need. I still remember being very excited for the release of Gothic 3 and ending up very disappointed with its poor state, caused by PB being rushed by Jowood. I wish the fanbase was more supportive of Alkimia now, not trying to rush them into releasing gameplay footage.
