Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video on "My Favorite Music Videos of All-Time". In this video I'm talking about a bunch of different ways that the medium of music videos works its magic. Whether you're doing some kind of artistic short film, a traditional lip-sync, something super vague and metaphorical, or you wanna test out your creative chops and mix & match these things...the possibilities are endless. From Lady Gaga and Kendrick Lamar, to Bjork and Carly Rae Jepsen, Young Thug to Daft Punk, Rick Astley to OutKast and everybody in between -- here are some of my favorites! Let me know what yours are down below.
favorite / music videos / all time / ever / list / top / kendrick / kanye / gaga / carly / radiohead / best / never gonna give you up / rickroll / take on me / mcr / ok go / daft punk / bjork / etc
2D animation in music videos is really cool. I remember being entranced by the Gorillaz videos when i was a kid. Super influential and timeless stuff. And thanks for the video btw.
what godzilla videos?
@@einar9994 I'm not sure man. U tell me.
Gorillaz the best i'm forever grateful that i grew up with them
@@LieLikesMusic i read gorillaz as godzilla for some reason
At The Door by The Strokes is the recent example of that
a boy is a gun by tyler the creator is honestly a cinematic masterpiece
Went from my least favourite on the album to one of my favourite songs after watching the video a few times
gun*
@@georgewright199 gun**
Ah that's why Biden likes kids
@@scottphillips7795 lmfao what
personally I'd definitely add a Michael Jackson video in there somewhere. Dude really laid out the blueprint for extravagant music videos with high production value. He legit treated them like short films
@Jugizet absolute banger. Scream is also pretty sick
Thriller would probably have to be the one mentioned.
@@mrmysterion5533 oh for sure. That or Billie Jean and Beat it. Generally speaking, everything he did for the Thriller album kinda set a new standard for how heavily music videos can support an album
I dont think he even likes mjs music
@@qdominika7253 why?
Just because he puts Prince above MJ doesn't mean he dislikes MJ completely
Always loved the music video for The Weeknd's "False Alarm" and that's exclusively because it was directed by Ilya Naishuller, the same guy who directed Hardcore Henry.
I also adore the video for BROCKHAMPTON's BUZZCUT. It's abstract visuals are so incredibly creative.
Bro , are you gonna be uploading more videos anytime soon or are you done with the UA-cam 🤔?? 🤷♂️
One of my faves too
miss u boo~
false alarm is SO SCARY. the entire thing is a giant TW, it’s so cool
The Weeknd's "False Alarm" was a bold move considering its age restricted
All Caps - Madvillain
Hey Ya - Outkast
A BOY IS A GUN* -Tyler, The Creator
I've Seen Footage - Death Grips
Karma Police - Radiohead
Alright - Kendrick Lamar
Virtual Insanity - Jamiroquai
Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads.
There are more but this is a sample of my favorite music videos.
When you're dead - Mgmt
All caps when you spell the mans name
Asap forever
I love Karma Police
All caps?🤨
Cellophane is honestly so beautiful why didn’t it win a grammy?
Because they picked old town road, just a famous mv
Frrrr like i have goosebumps every time i watch it so beautiful:')
Once In A Lifetime - Talking Heads
edit: all talking heads for that matter
They really understood how to make a killer music video
Once in a Lifetime, Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer, A-ha's Take On Me, Michael Jackson's Thriller, and Dire Straits' Money for Nothing are the most innovative videos of the 80s and some of my favorite music videos of all time
My favorite video ever since MTV debuted! Nobody has been able to do it better.
Talking Heads were so underrated.. they really were out on their own - very talented and original.
I think you forgot the GOAT of music videos. MJ pushed the music video format to the next level. My personal favorite of his is Scream with Janet
I think his best video overall is smooth criminal one. Its like his own little musical.
My favorites are Bad, Beat it, Billie Jean, and Black or White.
thriller was basically the first one so it cannot go unmentioned.
Nah. “Video Killed the Radio Star” came out years before Thriller. It was the first video featured on MYV.
@@adrianatgaming8640 it can go unmentioned if it's not one of your favorites 🤷🏻♂️
Okay but any of A$AP Rocky’s videos could definitely be on this list, all of them are wildly beautiful
very true especially lsd and sundress
asap forever video is the best music video if you’re talking film technique imo
The kid turned out fine is also brilliant, all the magic of Dexter Navy
All these videos are next level on Shrooms lol
Yeh L$D, Sundress, Babushka Boi (if that’s how u write it) & Everyday
I'm so early that Harrison hasn't referred to any of Kanye's videos yet, lol.
Keep up the good work, tho🎌
Same
Don’t worry he does 😂
A$AP Rocky got some of my favorite music videos. L$D, A$AP Forever, and Praise The Lord are all super dope.
Yamborgini high 😤
Tony Tone,Fukk Sleep,RAF,Money Man and Peso as well
praise the lord’s music video blew my mind
Excuse me always struck me as a very aesthetically pleasing music video
Even Fukk sleep is fire !!
Gaga has some of the best music videos oat, and I’m glad people are aware of that
I’m also happy that Alejandro was given some love. It’s a great music video and I think people forget that because Bad Romance was so well done
@@christiancage7431 yes, between bad romance, telephone and alejandro it does get the least amount of attention. shame.
911 blew me away. 😭
Can't emphasize enough on how much I love the mise en scène in Humble by Kendrick, while rappers usually rely on fast editing to convey dominance and look hard, Kendrick can hold a shot for 15-20 seconds and still be powerful. that shot with all the mens bald heads is incredible
The Jamiroquai video was achieved by the camera being attached to a small set that moved about a larger room. So the floors are never actually moving, it's all the walls, but because Jamiroquai's dancing is so good, he effectively gave the impression that he's moving about on a moving floor.
To me, the BEST music video ever is Johnny Cash - HURT. Something about it just fucks me up bad. The fact he's basically DYING of old age while recording the video is just heartbreaking. And the editing and cinematography also really shows his regrets with his life of being a famous folk singer and songwriter, knowing that all of that fame is for nothing at the end.
Absolutely, Johnny Cash is a legend.
That’s a music video that gets me upset every time
Bold of you to talk about music videos and not mention Michael Jackson.
Yeah, weird.
Fr. MJ legit revolutionized music videos and the story telling in them. So many iconic vids 💫
Agreed
Underrated comment
The video is called "My favorite music videos", it's not the best, or the most influential, it's just his favorites. Thats why, I guess.
Every music video for Daft Punk's Discovery, played in album order tells one big cohesive story and thats why it'll always be the top of my list.
This is actually because they are broken up from an actual film. The album was made into a film called Interstella 5555. It's really good
@@lochlanhanham8308 They aren't broken up. The movie was done as a companion of the album. Daft Punk Discovery served as inspiration, not the contrary.
Rammsteins Deutchland made me rewatch it 6 times in a row
Yeah was a little shocked it wasnt on this list
Omg i was about to post it abd then i found you.
Auslander, Du Hast and Amerika have realy cool videos too but man Deutchland hits hard
Yeah ok, but have you seen “Cookie Monster sings Du Hast”?
I feel like music videos are kind of a gateway into the artists mind and where they were at when making the song
Kanye’s “no church in the wild” and daft punk’s “instant crush” both have amazing videos
Runaway, the long version, is really beautiful and well done also.
The story of oj and this is america are easily some of the best modern music videos period
@Joe trash taste joe
@Joe "but not me I'm special" no one cares joe jay z and Gambino are great artists
@Joe good for you dweeb 🤣 want a cookie?
The Ghost of You transition from dance floor to ocean water running across the screen rivals some of the best feature film transitions
Fka twigs videos are absolutely a spiritual experience. Home to you made me cry so hard. I also suggest Panda bears boy latin if you like trippy visuals and animation. Radiohead's just is such a intresting and mysterious video.
Some of my favourites are
Aphex twin- rubber Johnny
MGMT- Little dark age
The Strokes- Ode to the Mets
Radiohead- karma police
I made a short list of favorites, but "Tonight, Tonight" by the Smashing Pumpkins is a beautiful homage to one of the first films ever made. Its imagery crossed with the theatrical goth/alt sound of the music is amazing. The peak of the orchestral music near the end followed by soft guitar strumming gives me chills.
Music and music video really on another level
The music video Cloudbusting by Kate Bush.
It’s like the best music video that could be a short film ever.
He seems to think that the name of the song is cloudBURSTing
Can't go wrong with Donald Sutherland!
Now we just need a playlist with all those music videos
Some of my favorite music videos are Jewelry by Blood Orange, Nikes from Frank Ocean and Cellophane and Sad Day by FKA Twigs. Side note, FKA Twigs has gotta have the most underrated music videos ever. So artistic and well shot / acted. Specially Sad Day which was directed by Hino Murai, the director behind tv shows like Donald Glover’s Atlanta and HBO’s Barry.
chihuahua
Fka twigs videos are so beautiful. Andrew Huang is one of my favourite directors. I really love home with you. So beautiful and emotional
nikes has a music video?
@@astrobb6s610 yes but it’s not on youtube for some weird reason, you gotta search it on vimeo
Clipping not only has great stories within songs, some impressive experimental hip hop, and some great videos.
Also the unsettling videos of Jack Stauber
I still imitate Christopher Walken's dance moves to this day lmao
My favorites (not including the ones you mentioned which I also like):
Radiohead - Man of War
Radiohead - Daydreaming
Tons of people - Frontier Psychiatrist Reanimated
They Might Be Giants - Unpronounceable
IDLES - Colossus
Crumb - Locket
Edit: IDLES - War
Honestly I’m not even huge in colossus but that music video was fantastic, just love the imagery 👏
Taylor Swift's look what you made me do is quite amazing
Stromae - quand c'est. This just looks really artistic
Stromae - papatoui. Most beautiful of the two
ASAP Rocky and Travis Scott have some pretty dope ass music videos 🔥🔥
i loved the span of videos you used- from the different genres and visual techniques! it definitely gives me a different way of looking at music videos!
beyond grateful for this video, thanks! Been hooked on Brockhampton vids lately and I've started to fall back in love with music videos
How “subterranean homesick blues,” isn’t on this list is beyond me. One of the most original and classic videos of all time.
One of the first!
I can't believe "Baby I'm yours" by Breackbot wasn't on the list. The animation is sureal, smooth, and honestly breathtaking.
Surprised there was no Lana Del Rey mention, her videos are always an experience
Star Guitar - The Chemical Brothers - Crazy Concept
Run Boy Run - Woodkid - He did it himself and it's just beautiful
2:25 I feel like the fact that he worked on Breaking Bad, and more specifically Ozymandias, often gets left out here. Sadly Rian's gotten a bad reputation because a lot of people didn't like the new Star Wars movies but they forget he played a big part in creating literally one of the best tv episodes of all time
Revolution 909 by daft punk is one of my favourites
It takes a girl leaving a rave encountering a cop, and she notices there’s a sauce stain on his shirt.
Then the rest of the music video shows a tomato growing, being harvested and processed, being sold in a store, being bought and cooked into a pasta sauce, then it shows how the cop spilled sauce on his shirt.
It’s the best kind of weird
I'm so happy that you mentioned OK Go. I really love their videos and music and I think it's a crime that so many people haven't seen their masterpieces yet
i love when artists use mvs to make a world and when certain videos connect together it's just satisfying to me
a lot - 21 Savage ft. J. Cole is up there for me, it just paints a great picture to an incredible track
That Aphex Twin's Windowlicker short characterisation was on point :D
"Come To Daddy" has a fantastic video.
aries has such a distinct music video style, love every one of them
Come to Daddy by Aphex Twin and My People by The Presets are both examples of electronic songs with really trippy visuals in their music videos
one of the most vivid memories i have from my childhood is sitting on my dads bed in his apartment watching the alejandro music video on his bulky 2000s tv
Rammstein - Deutschland is fantastic. Many hidden references
Omg thanks I discovered some great mvs thanks to this video and more specifically OK Go's amazing videography/discography 😍
Breezeblocks by Alt-J has always been one of my favorites, it's super interesting how they tried to tell a story in reverse from the ending and I had to watch that video like three times over to piece together everything that was going on
One - Metallica. When it came out it was unlike anything and uses the monochrome color and movie clips in the best ways possible.
That video creeped me the hell out back in the day!
Naughty by Irene & Seulgi has some of the best choreography I’ve ever seen in my life
I loved the choreo (probably my favorite from them) but I think Red Velvet have better music videos tho
I AGREE!
I totally agree but like others I would argue that rv has better music videos, beyond just the choreography. I think that some their mvs like Russian Roulette, Peek-a-Boo, ect. are really incredible because of they create unique concepts we associate with Red Velvet. Even their happy songs are just weird enough that they fit into their perfectly created and unique concept
I love all types of music, randomly found your channel. Glad I did! Subbed! Keep up the great work!
woah i love the avalanches and that video, I never thought I would see it in a compilation like this. I am so thrilled
Baby Keem - Hooligan is a great video for a great song. It’s simple, but it’s so dope how he has models rapping the song while he is sitting there with a disinterested expression on his face.
My all-time fav music video is Nirvana - Heart-Shaped Box.
Mine too
thx for including oh baby. the music video is soooo good
So happy someone else remembers that avalanches song and clip! It was a fever dream. I also loved Daft Punk’s Big City Nights and Whitetown’s ‘Your Woman.’
Music videos is genuinely one of the coolest genres of film imo so much cool stuff is made with the neat songs
Check out Deutschland by Rammstein. That video is packed full of lore and symbolism in one epic rendition of the history of Germany.
Five Finger Death Punch's A Little Bit Off about making the best out of a bad situation in the background of the pandemic, and Puscifer's Apocalyptical for ...just watch it.
I was hesitant in watching this video as I saw some of the comments and the artists mentioned aren't really my thing. But thank God I watched it because I loved the variety in this! I also like how each and every music video has a different reason why. I still think Ok Go is very underrated, and I'm glad how you didn't select a specific one (cause that's how good all of them are). I've already seen more than half of these videos and I took notes of the rest to watch after. Thank you! Really.
False Alarm by The Weeknd is my personal favorite. Super creative work with a drone plus the first person POV they used for the whole thing, with action happening at all the right times. It’s something straight out of a video game almost.
The Hi This is Flume visualizer deserves a shoutout. Imo the greatest music video of all time is Hurt by Johnny Cash though. A haunting look back at the flaws, love, and life of a legend made all the more powerful by the masterful editing.
YES FLUME
ariana grande's god is a woman and no tears left to cry are some of the best pop music videos of the last decade. some of my favorites also include MJ's thriller, travis' sicko mode and beyoncé’s formation
facts
ooo taste i see? nah but fr god is a woman is such a masterpiece, you can tell how thought out the music video is
Formation is pure genius, but then again, Melina Matsoukas is one of the greatest music video directors of all time. There's really only Hype Williams, Jonas Åkerlund and Sophie Muller at her level.
People don’t give One Last Time’s video enough credit either.
Great video, the pacing was fantastic
With the Hey Ya video, I think it just adds to the meaning behind the song itself. We're having fun just like the people in the audience dancing to the song without really listening to what he's saying.
Also I've been binging your videos, I love these
Toro Y Moi's Rose Quartz & MGMT's When You Die are top tier psychedelic experiences.
I’ve always loved “Razzmatazz” by idkhow, it’s equally modern and extremely 90s.
That Aries mv in the beginning got me off guard
Love to see Aries getting recognition he deserves
A truly beautiful addition to the whole lifetime of a song I feel as if they offer a greater insight upon the overall intended mood of a song that the artist intended. Much more immersion in seeing their creative vision in the visual format rather than just the audio of their tracks alone. Makes a song even better and greater to digest
I just shit myself
“Sacrilege” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is easily one of the greatest music videos ever.
Also love “Afterlife” by Arcade Fire with their live, in-one-take masterpiece.
My top 3:
- Vogue (Madonna)
- Bad Romance (Lady Gaga)
- Thriller (Michael Jackson)
Thriller is the reason those other 2 vids exist
we watched ok gos this too shall pass in science when we were learning about rube golberg machines, and that video has stuck with me so much, to the point that when i feel sad, ill go back and watch it, mostly for the final shot of the crew that worked on it cheering and celebrating how well the video went!
Steven Wilson - Drive Home may be my all-time favorite. The whole narrative and visuals fit the music perfectly! (also the video of The Raven That Refused To Sing is gorgeous as well)
A song that would have been nice to see here would have been Deutschland by Rammstein. Great cinematography and a critical take on Germany's history
Love the circles by posty vid, the song is about well things repeating with relationships and that but the video is about war and violence just expands on the songs meaning 👍
was hoping you’d mention OK Go. i was obsessed with their music videos as a kid
i fully expected This Is America to be on this list since its the only song that really comes to mind that is a true multimedia experience, where neither the song nor the video work without the other.
oh, and this one definitely isnt like advancing of the medium or anything, its just a personal beloved one: Genghis Khan by Miike Snow
Kendrick’s got some insane MVs
New Lands by Justice, Time To Dance by The Shoes, and Turbo Killer by Carpenter Brut. Turbo Killer is especially visually spectacular and fits so well with what Carpenter Brut was doing with his Trilogy album
I saw Turbo Killer as the short to kick off Blood Machines and both were so visually stunning and a perfect fit with the music.
Awesome video! As someone who has loved music videos since before MTV existed- HBO's Video Jukebox, anyone? - I really appreciated this. Also, glad to see Frontier Psychiatrist.
The ghost of you was super amazing. Especially that dance to wave transition. The acting is also amazing, i heard gerard imagined his brother was dying for real in that final scene.
The kids turned out fine by A$ap rocky is a great music video
This is america and UNLOCKED are some of my favourite recent rap music videos
I just want to say wow. this is some great editing.
I always just imagine my own visuals for Frontier Psychiatrist and never thought to actually look for a music video. Thanks for that and all the other recommendations.
virtual insanity music video is just phenomenal
If you ever do something like this again, you should include at least one Rammstein music video. Most of their videos are SUPER over the top, and that isn’t a bad thing at all, since that always means awesome visuals and crazy storylines attached to them.
These videos great! It would be helpful if you put a full list of these in the description, to make it easier to go back and watch all of these later
The Bachelorette music video is what got me into Björk! It got reccommended to me on youtube randomly and I was hooked.
I've always loved the music video for "once in a lifetime" by Talking Heads. The video feels hypnotic and so entertaining. He preforms gestures and ritual like actions like a speaker at a church or holy place would preform. Its an all around great video in my opinion.
Some of my favourite music videos (in no particular order) would be:
Deutschland by Rammstein
The Universal by Blur
Read My Mind - The Killers
Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve
Angels - Robbie Williams
Jamie’s xx “Gosh” is the one music video that comes to my mind in terms of how stunning it is. It elevates that song.
LCD Soundsystem video was incredible man.
My Machines by Battles ft. Gary Numan deserves a mention. I've never seen a man fall down the escalator for 4 minutes before.
Walk in the park live is also pretty cool, love his intensity.
Benjamin Clementine's "I won't complain" is absolutely haunting. He is kind of a haunting guy in general
You kicked it off with my absolute favorite from LCD Sound System then continued to hit it out of the park. I mean you mentioned So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings. Well done.
I still love music videos so I’m glad a lot of artists still put effort into them
