One thing I noticed that would be really cool if I could ever find another clawhammer banjoist to play with is experimenting with “taking turns” of sorts with the dynamics. It gave a really neat sound when I would play loud over you playing soft and playing soft over you playing loud
A great idea! Short of finding another banjoist, you could always record yourself playing loud, soft, loud, and then play along with the recording with the reverse dynamics. It would be a fun experiment!
Hi Tom, I love your videos because I’m a beginner and your way of teaching clawhammer is something I can really understand. My question is, do you strike down and play with your first finger or your middle finger? I can’t decide which one I should make myself play. My pointer finger is loud and my middle finger is more quite.
Thank you so much Jeanine! Both fingers are viable, and you should just pick the one that is most comfortable for you. I play with my middle, and have done so from the get go. It just felt "right". Keep experimenting and go with your gut! Best, Tom
Great warmup. I'm going to use this all the time, especially since my downstrokes tend to be accented even in pieces where I should be accenting the 5th. I already played through a few tunes after practicing that and they instantly sound better. Have y'all noticed UA-cam tags every one of Tom's videos and any video that has something to do with clawhammer banjo with, "Clawhammers"? The algorithm must think there's a whole group of people who are real enthusiastic about pulling up nails, like some kinda, "Most SATISFYING Nail Removal Ever! (Gone SEXUAL!)"
I've neeed this!! Thanks for all the banjo help over the years Tom. love the content.
Excellent Tom.
Thanks for more video of exercices like this. 😊
