- Guild vs. Guild, this time in the Westerly collection. The comparison here is really a demonstration of what happens when a builder uses a hard wood top like mahogany versus a softwood top like spruce. The tone changes but the attack and response changes as well.

Excellent comparison! For me the Mahogany one came out on top. Maybe a bit brighter than my Martin D15
Switch guitars after each song. Easier to compare sounds.
I found your comments about bracing interesting. How come some makers build some instruments with non-scalloped bracing intentionally? I believe the Martin 15 series uses non-scalloped bracing. It would be interesting to hear the Martin D-15 against this Guild D-120 to see what the sound difference is comparing scalloped vs non-scalloped bracing. In this video, I preferred the D-120 for sound.
I think I like the Guild better than the Yamaha Red Label
I love everything you play during the demo, I am a beginner and bought my Taylor Gs mini koa from you and love to learn the songs you use during your demonstration in your video and I love the mahogany one the best. I would also love to see the guild 120 vs the Taylor academy 20 walnut in comparison
Apologies if this is a stupid question, but have these Chinese-built Guilds effectively replaced the Madeira line? I've just bought a D-140 (in natural finish) for my dad and expect it to arrive sometime this week.
Besides replacing the strings (I'm most likely going to use D'Addario EJ16s), what else would you do as a matter of course of setting them up right out of the box?
Does it have the bottom of the American D-20 Guild? They sound amazing!
I love everything you're playing, could you guide me to titles? I'd love to start playing these too!! Thanks for taking the time to put together all these quality reviews 🙌
Nice, I love the all mahagony ❤
Prices so good
8:06 spruce 10:31 mahogany
Is the Top & back & sides solid wood? You did not make that one hundred percent clear. Thumbs up to your videos.
I understand the results of the compressive nature of an all mahogany guitar - couldn't you regain the highs (at least in part) with a 12-string all-mahogany model?
Hi from Germany
Great review, Chis. Nice to see Guild getting some love. I have the OM version of the 120, and the 140 in antique burst, and both are truly excellent guitars.
Are you Andy Mckees brother?
No one notices near the end of the video. He says the guitar I am holding, the (all) mahogany, is the one I would choose. But he is holding the spruce top Guild guitar. Then he picks up the guitar and spins it around to look at the guitar. His face-features changed, and his words began to crumble. As if saying to himself "Oops, I'm bad my mistake".
That was very funny.
You cannot go wrong on either guitar by Guild. I thought the spruce top sounded more real and alive. They are both great sounding guitars. Anyone would be happy to own either one of them.
I like the mahogany better.
If Guild the manufacturer can't state where they are (what country) manufactured. Then, they are not worth my time or money. Overseas does not cut it.
They are made in China.
@@keithclark486 Outside of the US, Japan probably make the best guitars.
It says in the soundhole...made in china
Why doesn't anyone play some rock ballads? That would bring out the true tone of the guitar. This stuff puts me to sleep.
Both sound awful to me! Boxy, unrefined, lack of presence
