+Quirentia I didn't see any salsa tracks in the snow - didn't really look like it was working that well! Thanks for the subs!

Hold on. Lefse is just a tortilla? There are all these Norwegian-Americans all talking about lefse all the time as if it were the most Norwegian thing on the planet, although none of them can ever produce lefse to show me. When I was in Norway I looked for lefse, but couldn't find it. Has this all been some practical joke by Norwegian people from Wisconsin?! DAMN YOU, PACKER FANS! DAMN YOU TO THE HELL!!!!
    ...ahem...
    Takk for Subs.

+TaiChiKnees Lefse is a generic term for all flat and soft bread, in this case a tacolefse (tortilla). Your friends were probably talking about either a potetlefse (savory) or some kind of flour-based lefse (served with sugar, butter and usually cinnamon). The most common kind of sweet lefse is Vestlandslefse (search on google)

+TaiChiKnees I think norwegians started to use the name lefse/ tortillalefse because it is so similar to the good old lefse that we all know. But the original lefse is kept dry ( hard, a bit like "flatbrød"), then you add water, and it becomes soft. It was a way of preserving it. As far as I know it was ( and still is) allways served with butter and sugar, as a cake.

Ellisiv Nyhamar tante Torunn I'm not really mad; I'm from Illinois and we like to disparage Wisconsin. But the Norwegian-Americans do have a specific type of lefse which I'm told is made around Christmas in the USA. I would guess it is like many things from the home country in all different cultures... in the US they take on a mystique all their own.

+TaiChiKnees Hahaha! But at least we got the opportunity to tell you all we knew about lefse. You are probably right, traditions can become bigger and more mythic abroad than in the place they come from. Next time in Norway, wisit the "Folkemuseum" at Bygdøy in Oslo. They serve lefse.

I am hoping to return to Norway this or next summer, and I will definitely get lefse this time! Tusen takk! :-)
