For the whole thing I give it As and Bs besides acting thats a D-. They would get a F but the mother saved, i mean hell the child gave more emotion than the main dude.
This is a pretty good rendition of the song. If I could offer one criticism, Sam sounds too unemotional in the first half of the video. He's confronting the man who ruined his life; he should be fuming. He gets better around the three minute mark though, showing anger and even mania by the end.
That's actually not always the case you would be amazed of how burnt-out people are where they're filled with so much emotion that their emotional display doesn't present any of it because you have been wanting and tasting it for so long an empty feeling of Darkness takes you over
I feel like the emotionless expression and such actually make it better, cause we see this sort of change in character, he goes from seeming tired and battered down, such would be the case for someone who loses everything they have, but slowly see him build into that almost manic sort of glee as he reaches the point of killing the man who ruined his and his mother’s life
My only complaint is that the old man showed regret on his face throughout the video while listening to his past. I kind of imagined the man in the song to be sitting down, uncertain about what he'll do once he's finished with the story, not regretting his past. At the end it got better since the old man's face showed that he was curious what the mariner would do next but still didn't really have a scared look on his face. Other than these two things though the video was really good.

I've seen a few comments saying the man didn't look afraid at the end, but I think he did. It isn't like a cowering for his life kinda fear, it was a cold fear of the unknown/expectation of what's going to happen
I loved this song and the animations that came with it. Just a terrific haunting tale. However you did something with it that can only be described as art. You did so much with your eyes. Sometimes gleeful at reaching his goal. You see them drift into sorrow over his mothers death and then straight into a horrible rage. We are two mariners Our ships' sole survivors In this belly of a whale Its ribs are ceiling beams Its guts are carpeting I guess we have some time to kill You may not remember me I was a child of three And you, a lad of eighteen But I remember you And I will relay to you How our histories interweave At the time you were A rake and a roustabout Spending all your money On the whores and hounds Oh You had a charming air All cheap and debonair My widowed mother found so sweet And so she took you in Her sheets still warm with him Now filled with filth and foul disease As time wore on you proved A debt-ridden drunken mess Leaving my mother A poor consumptive wretch Oh, oh And then you disappeared Your gambling arrears The only thing you left behind And then the magistrate Reclaimed our small estate And my poor mother lost her mind Then, one day in spring My dear sweet mother died But before she did I took her hand as she, dying, cried Oh, oh "Find him, bind him Tie him to a pole and break His fingers to splinters Drag him to a hole Until he wakes up naked Clawing at the ceiling of his grave" It took me fifteen years To swallow all my tears Among the urchins in the street Until a priory Took pity and hired me To keep their vestry nice and neat But never once in the employ Of these holy men Did I ever once turn my mind From the thought of revenge Oh, oh One night I overheard The prior exchanging words With a penitent whaler from the sea The captain of his ship Who matched you toe to tip Was known for wanton cruelty The following day I shipped to sea with a privateer And in the whistle of the wind I could almost hear Oh, oh "Find him, bind him Tie him to a pole and break His fingers to splinters Drag him to a hole Until he wakes up, naked Clawing at the ceiling of his grave There is one thing I must say to you As you sail across the sea Always, your mother will watch over you As you avenge this wicked deed" And then, that fateful night We had you in our sight After twenty months at sea Your starboard flank abeam I was getting my muskets clean When came this rumbling from beneath The ocean shook The sky went black And the captain quailed And before us grew The angry jaws Of a giant whale Oh, oh, oh, oh Don't know how I survived The crew all was chewed alive I must have slipped between his teeth But, oh, what providence What divine intelligence That you should survive as well as me It gives my heart great joy To see your eyes fill with fear So lean in close and I will whisper The last words you'll hear Oh, oh

Nice! This is my favorite Decemberists’ song and I love discovering even late that other people like it enough to interpret it in other ways!
Why are 90% of the comments so recent when this was published like 3 years ago...?
sea of thieve me friend this is why
@@jaybornkiller I'm not sure I understand
@@greypoint000 its a game people search more pirate song
An animantic of the song has been going around recommendations.
UA-cam algorithim my friend
he didnt look very afraid... he looked confused the entire time like "dude i dont think this is the right guy" lol
The step dad is too old, he’s suppose to be 33.
Back then you were lucky to live to be 33 so 33 was old
Kalil Jackson lmao fair enough, still doesn’t quite explain the white hair tho
I mean, my dad looked like that when he was 40, its not too outlandish
it seems like it ws more than a couple months between when they met and she died. also he was looking for him almost 2yrs I say 35ish
if I didn't know this song by heart I'd be asking what musical this came from and googling where to stream it, good work!
(Unfortunately I do, and it gives me an irrational hatred of how clearly he's enunciating all the words, lol.)
Let’s just appreciate how awesome this is!! I absolutely love how it pure faces to the characters. It’s lovely.
I loved the video and you know what I felt like the singing added a more natural thing to it sure it's not as good as the actual singers but the way it's conveyed with the video makes it amazing we're supposed to feel this guy's pain and this isn't a song about handing is it's a painful song to sing so the emotion behind the character makes it feel like that's what it was going for
I've seen a few comments saying the man didn't look afraid at the end, but I think he did. It isn't like a cowering for his life kinda fear, it was a cold fear of the unknown/expectation of what's going to happen
The production value of this video is so impressive. Also, whoever the makeup artist is was extra good.
damn you put everything into making these sets. i love it!
Wonderful! Good work !
I've known this song for years and this is the best live-action rendition of it. Bravo from me.
Not me almost crying when his mother danced with him again 😭
its really cool to see a live adaptation of this song
This is really well done!
AMAZING! love this song and every bit of this was amazing to me, thankyou so much for making this
Woah
Great job guys
Thank you for creating this
Excellent. They should've adopted this as the music video
Wait, why was this not recommended? This is amazing
Great video. Good voice. Kickass actors.
4:50 thats the original mother!
So why is he Asian when he's young but as he grows up he's seemingly Mediterranean?
filipino?
@@lj-wp3sf Holy shit this makes sense lmao.
His dad wasn't an asian apparently
We are all brothers
Hot damn! This was so damn good. I've always wanted to see a video for this song and you nailed it.
She died in the middle of the street?
no she died on the side of the road
How have I not seen this before, I listen to the song all the time, this is a great video.
I loved this song and the animations that came with it. Just a terrific haunting tale. However you did something with it that can only be described as art. You did so much with your eyes. Sometimes gleeful at reaching his goal. You see them drift into sorrow over his mothers death and then straight into a horrible rage. True showcase of the misery that creates a broken man consumed with revenge. I am so happy I clicked on your video when I searched for this song again. I subscribed and will look into your other content very soon.
15 years apart, that guy's aged terribly
WOW!!!
This is so cool and creepy in he same time!!!!!!!!
And who realizes when their in the whale it looks like Pinocchio?
This is amazing. I’ve watched so many videos of people doing something like this for the song but none of them do it right. This one is perfect.
I’m obsessed with this song and video-
The clip is badass but the music and vocals are much better from the decemberists
THIS IS SO COOL OMG the production quality? The set design? The filming? I just,, AAGGH ITS SO GOOD
This was really well done. Absolutely outstanding.
Excellent work! Very well done. A combination of a tragically beautiful narrative with equally beautiful vocals and visuals.
this was actually really good
I absolutely love this song and to see a video like this to accompany it is just beautiful 💕💕💕 I love this beyond belief
I... didn't see fear in the old man's face. I think he won that fight.
I don't always drink while about to be killed in the belly of a whale..
But when I do, I drink Dos Equis.-The most interesting dead guy in the ocean.
Really well done! Great job!
Great video
Damn, this is really good! It's really professional-looking! Ugh, now I wish someone would make an actual movie out of this song lol. Nothing like a good old-fashioned revenge story, amirite? XD Seriously though, good job.
Why haven´t this hit 1 million views already?!
I like this
This has got to be the best one of this song I've seen
Good work. The actors could have sold it better, but besides that everything else was excellent.
This is incredibly well done!
Why are there only five comments. Also they look way too unenthusiastic
You've answered your own question my friend, at least partially.
Someone should make a movie about this Song
This is a pretty damn good video, well done.
This is so cool!
I love songs like this
Really enjoyed this cover and the video helps people bring the song to life Great Production
Great video but the singing wasent very enthusiastic deserves more views though
I like the mothers part and the effort that went into this BUT his singing needs more feeling
We are two mariners
Our ships' sole survivors
In this belly of a whale
Its ribs are ceiling beams
Its guts are carpeting
I guess we have some time to kill
You may not remember me
I was a child of three
And you, a lad of eighteen
But I remember you
And I will relay to you
How our histories interweave
At the time you were
A rake and a roustabout
Spending all your money
On the whores and hounds
Oh
You had a charming air
All cheap and debonair
My widowed mother found so sweet
And so she took you in
Her sheets still warm with him
Now filled with filth and foul disease
As time wore on you proved
A debt-ridden drunken mess
Leaving my mother
A poor consumptive wretch
Oh, oh
And then you disappeared
Your gambling arrears
The only thing you left behind
And then the magistrate
Reclaimed our small estate
And my poor mother lost her mind
Then, one day in spring
My dear sweet mother died
But before she did
I took her hand as she, dying, cried
Oh, oh
"Find him, bind him
Tie him to a pole and break
His fingers to splinters
Drag him to a hole
Until he wakes up naked
Clawing at the ceiling of his grave"
It took me fifteen years
To swallow all my tears
Among the urchins in the street
Until a priory
Took pity and hired me
To keep their vestry nice and neat
But never once in the employ
Of these holy men
Did I ever once turn my mind
From the thought of revenge
Oh, oh
One night I overheard
The prior exchanging words
With a penitent whaler from the sea
The captain of his ship
Who matched you toe to tip
Was known for wanton cruelty
The following day
I shipped to sea with a privateer
And in the whistle of the wind
I could almost hear
Oh, oh
"Find him, bind him
Tie him to a pole and break
His fingers to splinters
Drag him to a hole
Until he wakes up, naked
Clawing at the ceiling of his grave
There is one thing I must say to you
As you sail across the sea
Always, your mother will watch over you
As you avenge this wicked deed"
And then, that fateful night
We had you in our sight
After twenty months at sea
Your starboard flank abeam
I was getting my muskets clean
When came this rumbling from beneath
The ocean shook
The sky went black
And the captain quailed
And before us grew
The angry jaws
Of a giant whale
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Don't know how I survived
The crew all was chewed alive
I must have slipped between his teeth
But, oh, what providence
What divine intelligence
That you should survive as well as me
It gives my heart great joy
To see your eyes fill with fear
So lean in close and I will whisper
The last words you'll hear
Oh, oh
Wonderful
Incredible work! I love seeing a live action rendition of this song!
Hmmm, he went from Asian to Indian/white mix in 15 years... Interesting 🤔
Would be great if credit was given to the group that wrote this song. This is “The Mariner’s Revenge Song”, by The Decemberists.
Did you actually watch the vid? Its right before the credits.
Jesus, the father looks terrible for being about 40.
Being 18 when he met his mom, asuming the kid grew up a bit before his mom died, and then he took 15 years to get over her death should leave the dad at like 40 (give or take a few years).
My point still stands, I just mistyped father when it should've been ex-boyfriend
They don't have a shave in those days....
Holly... why this doesnt have more views?
Super cool to see a dramatization of this song
