Cuz the commenters are missing the mark: yeah, the Decembrists version is better. It's never going to happen to have someone outperform the Decembrists with their own music.

Decemberists did it better, also, historical relativism is at play here. Songs like this typically found themselves in English folklore. I dont mean to be racist, but people are interjecting their ideologies into songs about sea chanties based on real events.

People who are having a hard time grasping the songs timeline, allow me to shine some light. He was 3 when his mother Met this man... realistically they probably spent a few years together before he had so much debt he had to flee from debts. So now the child is 6, the mother wandered the streets for a year until consumption killed her probably due to lack of shelter and good food. child is now 7 it took me 15years to swallow all my tears... now the child is a young man of 23 and works for the church sweeping.. .probably another year or two at least before overhearing the news, so hes 25 and sets sail... he could have realistically been at sea for YEARS before catching up to the ship in question... so he could be in his late twenties or mid 30s by the time he finally catches up to the crook. the crook would be roughly in his late 40s to mid 50s at this point... so this old man isnt too far off from how an elderly sailor might look.

Love the deep voice for the mother and that she dies on the street - I've seen a lot of interpretations have her lying on a bed, but I think yours makes the whole story that much more tragic and realistic. I also think your video captures a deeper connection between the mother and son, particularly with them laughing and dancing on the boat, which is both wholesome and terrifying considering the mother is a ghost and the two are laughing about their plot to violently torture and kill a man. And not to mention the costumes! I particularly like what the mother is wearing inside the house and her ghostly outfit. Nice attention to detail including stays! Periodically showing the Mariner and the Captain inside the whale contributed to the balance and variety of scenes and made extra use of one of this videos strengths: having real people play the characters - which gave a more raw and realistic feel and allowed for more focus on facial expressions. Quite a captivating watch throughout. Well done 👏👏

@@Timbo__Slice I would argue that the man is established to be a heavy drinker, and alcoholism can definitely age you physically. I think that combined with being out at sea time and time again over long periods probably contributed to his haggard appearance, that and people who are in their mid-30s can start going gray/white, especially if their constitution isn't the best.
I know this comment is old, just something I was thinking about myself... this is the only explanation I came up with. If you want to think more metaphorically, you could consider it a stylistic choice, as the younger man seems scarily alive with the prospect of finally getting his revenge, while the other is frail, gray, almost dead-looking. He's "not far from his end," as it were.

@@selestedoesntevencare2169 I found myself maniacally singing that refrain yesterday, while thinking of my ex-husband who did all he could to destroy me and his son, 30 years ago. Our's is a long story involving kidnap and murder, and I appeared on "Unsolved Mysteries" in 1997 to describe his crimes. I can't watch that episode, I look so dead inside but I was anything but. I was controlling my rage.
My ex went to prison for 4 years, on a different charge. He was never indicted for murder. When I found he was to be released, I sold my house and moved 1500 miles with my little boy and our two cats. When I got to my new state, I went to court and changed my name to something very common, and was able to get some recent details removed from my credit report so he couldn't track me.
20 years ago, I bought a 20 acre property in the mountains, no neighbors for 2 miles. We're off-grid, only one dirt road to my house so I know when someone is driving this way. We've lived peacefully here for 17 years.
Last month my son received a letter. From the man who murdered our family member and hurt us in every way he could.
      He's found us.
My son is 31 now. We discussed what to do if this monster shows up. We just don't know which of us should pull the trigger. My son is a better shot, but if someone goes to prison for ending that monster's reign of terror, it should be me.
My son asked, "What if you're incapacitated? What if he shoots you first?"
With a maniacal grin I sang: THEN...
      "Find him, bind him
Tie him to a pole and break
      His fingers to splinters
      Drag him to a hole
      Until he wakes up naked
Clawing at the ceiling of his graaaaaaaaaaave!"🎶

The captin had most of his emotions shown through his makeup with the dark circles on his eyes. While the main dude was lifeless the entire song and gave little to no emotion the entire time. I mean in the whale scenes he looked liked he was reading the most uninteresting book in the world then smiled a little for a whole of like 3 seconds and went back to lifeless for the ending. For the whole thing I give it As and Bs besides acting thats a D-. They would get a F but the mother saved, i mean hell the child gave more emotion than the main dude.

I kind of imagined the man in the song to be sitting down, uncertain about what he'll do once he's finished with the story, not regretting his past. At the end it got better since the old man's face showed that he was curious what the mariner would do next but still didn't really have a scared look on his face. I loved the video and you know what I felt like the singing added a more natural thing to it sure it's not as good as the actual singers but the way it's conveyed with the video makes it amazing we're supposed to feel this guy's pain and this isn't a song about handing is it's a painful song to sing so the emotion behind the character makes it feel like that's what it was going for

I loved this song and the animations that came with it. Just a terrific haunting tale. However you did something with it that can only be described as art. You did so much with your eyes. Sometimes gleeful at reaching his goal. You see them drift into sorrow over his mothers death and then straight into a horrible rage. True showcase of the misery that creates a broken man consumed with revenge. I am so happy I clicked on your video when I searched for this song again. I subscribed and will look into your other content very soon.

    We are two mariners
    Our ships' sole survivors
In this belly of a whale
    Its ribs are ceiling beams
    Its guts are carpeting
I guess we have some time to kill
    You may not remember me
I was a child of three
And you, a lad of eighteen
    But I remember you
And I will relay to you
    How our histories interweave
    At the time you were
    A rake and a roustabout
    Spending all your money
    On the whores and hounds
    Oh
    You had a charming air
    All cheap and debonair
My widowed mother found so sweet
And so she took you in
Her sheets still warm with him
Now filled with filth and foul disease
As time wore on you proved
    A debt-ridden drunken mess
    Leaving my mother
    A poor consumptive wretch
    Oh, oh
    And then you disappeared
    Your gambling arrears
The only thing you left behind
    And then the magistrate
    Reclaimed our small estate
And my poor mother lost her mind
    Then, one day in spring
    My dear sweet mother died
    But before she did
I took her hand as she, dying, cried
    Oh, oh
    "Find him, bind him
Tie him to a pole and break
    His fingers to splinters
    Drag him to a hole
    Until he wakes up naked
Clawing at the ceiling of his grave"
    It took me fifteen years
    To swallow all my tears
Among the urchins in the street
    Until a priory
    Took pity and hired me
To keep their vestry nice and neat
But never once in the employ
    Of these holy men
Did I ever once turn my mind
    From the thought of revenge
    Oh, oh
    One night I overheard
    The prior exchanging words
With a penitent whaler from the sea
    The captain of his ship
Who matched you toe to tip
    Was known for wanton cruelty
    The following day
I shipped to sea with a privateer
And in the whistle of the wind
    I could almost hear
    Oh, oh
    "Find him, bind him
Tie him to a pole and break
    His fingers to splinters
    Drag him to a hole
    Until he wakes up, naked
Clawing at the ceiling of his grave
There is one thing I must say to you
As you sail across the sea
Always, your mother will watch over you
As you avenge this wicked deed"
    And then, that fateful night
We had you in our sight
    After twenty months at sea
    Your starboard flank abeam
I was getting my muskets clean
When came this rumbling from beneath
    The ocean shook
    The sky went black
    And the captain quailed
    And before us grew
    The angry jaws
    Of a giant whale
    Oh, oh, oh, oh
    Don't know how I survived
The crew all was chewed alive
I must have slipped between his teeth
    But, oh, what providence
    What divine intelligence
That you should survive as well as me
It gives my heart great joy
To see your eyes fill with fear
So lean in close and I will whisper
    The last words you'll hear
    Oh, oh
