Yeah, an updated "(x number of) modules a noobie should get familiar with" video is in the works. And when I say "in the works", I have a roadmap laid out for the next 10 videos or so. It'll be in there somewhere.

No exaggeration, it took five minutes to get into the meat of the video after telling us about today's shop, his dog's illness etc. Your videos get straight into it, no wasted chat, absolute solid gold facts. That's why if I DO want to share something which is off-topic, I always leave it until AFTER the content you came for. :) It frustrates the living bejeesus outta me when other creators waste so much of their viewer's time on stuff which is completely irrelevant. As much as I love his video production style, Peter McKinnon is a shocking offender on this front.
I did follow you few years ago for DT. However i gave up b/c I couldn't get good result. Now there are so many changes to DT and many new tutorials from various speakers. I still find yours is precise and straight to the point. I am hoping this time i could get more out of DT. Thank you Bruce.

I’ve been taking photographs since the Sixties one way or another - on film. iPhones apart, I’ve made a quantum leap into digital photography with a Lumix M4/3 body and my old Pentax lenses. I’m also very much into b&w. I’m intrigued by darktable and am looking forward to a new journey, albeit at 78!✌️

Hello Bruce and the rest, this series (and many many tipps of my friend ecky) helped me to get fast results on my raws. Also, when i want to go deeper (masks etc), i always come back to this series. darktable is not self explaining, but with the community and series like this, its getting way more easier for a beginner, and i am still one. greets from germany too all beginners!!

Thanks, Bruce!. I picked up photography about 6 months ago and have been using Darktable since the beginning thanks to you. I knew I didn't want to pay the Adobe subscription so the choice came down to which free software had the best community and support. My latest breakthrough was learning how to use the mask manager to intersect masks which I mostly use to apply a gradient to a drawn mask. Also, Affinity Photo 2 can do focus stacking, HDR, and pano stitching in the free version. It's 100x easier to use than other tools like Hugin.
Excellent, because it's a recent video on the newest version. Also DT does not import pictures in folders on the date they were taken, wish is troubling. But there is a way to do it, you should make a video on it.
Hey Bruce, thanks for the great videos! I’m not quite understanding why I would want to use Copy & Import vs Add To Library. Maybe I’m missing something in your explanation. Do you have an example/s of why a project photographer would use the option to get their images into Darktable?
OK, so you would use "add to library" if the images are already in the folder where they are always going to live. You're saying to darktable "these images live in this folder, and I want you to add them to my library of all images". But you use "copy and import" when the images are not in their final destination yet (like when they are on a memory card which you've mounted to your system temporarily). In this instance you're saying to darktable "These images need to be copied to my internal hard drive so I always have them, even after I have removed this memorry card from the USB port". Make sense?
My sincere thanks to you for going through all this once again. If I say so myself, I'm usually pretty good at post processing, but this program remains one of the most intricate and awkward raw converters I've ever encountered. I've spent some time on it over the past couple of days but still can't even find the zoom/magnify button! At present, I find the colour adjustments in particular to be incredibly slow and long-winded, and so I'm hoping one of your other tutorials will make things a little easier for me. To be honest, I find any similarities to Lightroom to be purely coincidental because that program follows a simple, logical sequence and its user interface is second to none. Unfortunately my ancient version 5.7 is finally no longer fit for purpose with the output from a Lumix S5 camera. So I hope Darktable will eventually fill the void. If not, I'll simply convert all my RW2 files to DNGs and go back to old faithful. But anyway, keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words, Michael. Zoom is done with your mouse wheel. If you're on a Mac, or have some other pointing device which lacks a scroll wheel, I'm not sure what the alternative is. There's probably a keyboard shortcut for that scenario. As for similarities with, or differences from, lightroom, I can only point you towards the developers, who have long maintained that the intent with darktable is for users to dig a little deeper with their understanding of colour science. That's WHY things are not as simple in dt as they are in LR. Lightroom has dumbed everything down. And before you shoot me, I'm just the messenger! I'm not saying I agree with the design intent, or with the execution. I just accept that that is how it is. Nor do I claim to understand it all, either!! There are still gaps in my knowledge, and I try to be upfront with those gaps as I come across them. All I can suggest is... stick with it. It might feel awkward for a little while (took me a couple of months back when I started before I started to feel comfortable with it), but it does get easier as the muscle memory kicks in! :)

I can see there are a few alternative ways of modifying colours and I'll try to find the one that best suits my needs. Yesterday I did create a colour profile for the new Lumix S5 by ColorChecker, but have only applied it in Lightroom so far. It helps to have an attractive starting point, but the initial colour rendition on these Panasonic files is not something I particularly enjoy in Darktable. Anyway, I do have time on my hands so will persevere as you suggest.

Hi Bruce ; ) I'm so tired of Windows .................... I'm moving to Linux! Thus far, I've been enjoying your tutorials ( still have many to look through ). I have a question for you .............. As I'll be ditching Windows I'm taking the opportunity of moving my entire photo library ( 28,000 + images ) and ( video files ) to a larger drive. I've been using Adobe Lightroom 6 Classic, the last of the bought and paid for versions! ( I like to 'own' my software! ). As 'Importing' my entire image library is doable ...................... what will happen to my Video files? As most digital cameras now days have the ability of recording video, do these files get imported into your image library ( catalogue ), or do they not get important as the file type may not be recognised? Turk, thanks for the kind words. Even though dt supports video files, I've never imported one, so cannot comment on the functionality! I imagine that if you have your videos in some sort of organised folder structure, you should be able to simply go "add to library" the same as you would for photos. That's my guess, anyway.
I've not seen the other videos so far so if you already added this information at a later point never mind: 1) Adding colour and stars to the images were done by hotkeys. My first though was which key that might be. A short note for the buttons at the bottom could help. Yes, it's pretty obvious, but you can already test the features and play around with them 2) Same for tags. The image was already tagged. But how would you add them? My guess is that you will add these information at some later point anyway, but it would have been a nice segway to the feature.
The trouble with making a mini-series like this set of 4 videos is balancing what is too much info and what is too little! The curse for the creator (me) is you can never please everybody! Some will say "you didn't go deep enough", and some will say "I was overwhelmed by it all". Colour labels can be assigned with F1 through F5. Star ratings through 1-5 above your QWERT keys. Funny, I thought I'd mentioned that in the video. If I didn't give you enough on creating tags, search my channel for the video on tagging. I know I covered it there, and it is still relevant info.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that we should be working in jpeg instead of RAW. I shoot in raw all the time! And while dt will process jpeg files, it's real strength is in what it can do with RAW data.
As for preferences, there is a lot in there! And the problem is, it changes with every release! The category headings should give you a rough idea of what to expect in each page of the preferences. And for most of it, you'll work it out fairly quickly if you give it some thought! Admittedly, some are a bit esoteric and not immediately obvious though. No, I don't have a video on preferences specifically.

If you're on windows, you're SOOL. Printing isn't supported on the windoze version of darktable. This is due to a piece of code which darktable uses for printing, and that code isn't supported by windoze.

No need to wait for a video. I'd suggest do all of your development in darktable (because of its superior colour handling), export as a .tiff, and print from any other windoze-based, colour-managed software. Not the perfect solution, I realise, but sadly, the only option for dt users on that platform.

When you say "batch processing of copyright", do you mean "add copyright info to my images"? If so, yes, you can do that in darktable. To be honest, I can't remember if I've covered that in a video or not. In lighttable view, select one image (or a series of images), select the "Metadata" module on the right side, fill in the appropriate fields, and click the button which says "Apply".

I already knew that. That's not likely to change any time soon. darktable uses something called CUPS for its printing function, but that is not compatible with windoze. :(
I have found an issue I can not see a way out of. I have gone to a pop concert 6 to 10 bands a day 300 to 600 photo's a band. Day 1 fill card, darktable no problems. Day 2 empty card go and fill card again, darktable can not see any photos. Does Darktable have a photo limit? I found a folder limit I increased. Any ideas?
No, there should be no limit to the number of photos per folder, as far as I'm aware. When you say you "emptied" the card, did you format the card, or just use your operating systems file manager to delete the images?

New to this software so found this very very useful- however I am having one major issue. When importing images- it does not take me to my external drives!? no idea what is wrong. Anyone help me here?
Assuming you are on a version later than 3.8, the import dialogue offers you 2 choices: "add to library" or "copy and import". Add to library will assume that the images are already located where you want them, and that you simply want darktable to be aware of them from that location. Copy and import assumes the images are not in a permanent location (like maybe you mounted a memory card in a USB card reader) and that you wish to copy them to another location and have darktable remember those images in that new location.
@@audio2u Hi Bruce- I am on version 4.2.1. I just downloaded it yesterday. But when I go to import the photos I cant get to my Hard Drives where my photos are. Not sure why I cant go to other drives- the option is not there at all.

That's really odd. I can see no reason why darktable would not see or import the day 2 photos. Are you able to view those images in-camera?

Copy and import assumes the images are not in a permanent location (like maybe you mounted a memory card in a USB card reader) and that you wish to copy them to another location and have darktable remember those images in that new location.
@@audio2u Hi Bruce- I am on version 4.2.1. I just downloaded it yesterday. But when I go to import the photos I cant get to my Hard Drives where my photos are. Not sure why I cant go to other drives- the option is not there at all.

I was concerned when I heard you say that you were going to assume a newbie is mostly someone coming from lightroom or the like, as I have a niece whom I'm just about to introduce to darktable who has no such background. I'm glad to say, having watched the video, that you don't require prior knowledge. Good job.
