    Whoa Nelly. The device might be garbage but it ain't crap because you cannot use it to ferment beer or wine. It's a still. Stills assume that you have the alcohol substrate ready for distilling . You use a still to concentrate the ethanol, not make ethanol. More: you can use any yeast to make your substrate. They simply suggest that you use their "turbo" yeast - perhaps because most folk who and will be making moonshine really don't care what it is that they are distilling (especially if they intend to use the distillate for fuel) . It's not the yeast they recommend which won't produce methanol or acetaldehydes but what it is that they suggest you ferment - tasteless table sugar. On the other hand if you ferment grains or fruit there will be foreshots and heads. And in fact the reason why they suggest that your target volume of distillate from 3785 ccs of wash is 700 is because anything more will include some fusels and other "impurities" that might (MIGHT) detract from the spirits you have produced - though if you intend to make brandy from fruit (rather than "vodka" ) you might want to blend in some of the tails 'coz that's where most of the fruity flavors are going to sit.. Bottom line. It's a plug and play table top pot still. It will transform 5 bottles of home made wine (12% ABV) into 1 bottle of brandy at about 45% ABV (90 proof)

    They are much cheaper now if you search. The stills are brilliant and produce alcohol at 55% for me at an extremely good price. Pretty simple and good fun.

  • @kb2vca
    @kb2vca 4 роки тому +9

    Actually, You can use any yeast with this. All it needs is something with alcohol - could be wine, could be beer or cider - and however you make your wine or beer or cider you can use that still to distill the wash or mash and if the starting ABV was about 10% you can obtain about 500 ml of 55% (110 proof) alcohol from about 4 L or 4 quarts of substrate. The less alcohol you distill the higher the proof you'll get from this device. Given that the most fruit and grains when fermented produce some methanol you should capture the first 40 ml and use that for cleaning and the like. It's not the yeast that creates a methanol free wash but the choice of fermentable sugars.

      while it is possible to put anything alcoholic through this system, because of its small boiler size its just not worth doing. heads, hearts and tails is what you seem to be working from, foreshots and heads are different. unless you are a skilled distiller what you end up with tastes like ass.
      if your set on running what ever you want through a still get a T500 with reflux or anything that has a boiler size of 25 liters or more, you get much cleaner cuts and a superior final product.

    • @kb2vca

      @@makinghomebrewwildandcheap I am sure that you are right but garbage in , garbage out and so if the wash or mash to be distilled was a quality product and not the "kilju" sugar hooch made with "turbo yeast" that the manufacturer suggests folk use and which then requires the substrate to be filtered through carbon before it can be drunk, this "poor man's pot still" can in fact make excellent 500 ml batches (not 700 or 800) of alcohol at 55% ABV that can be aged on oak or made into brandies, schnapps or liqueurs that are very drinkable. A superior product would be made with with a better still? Of course, I don't doubt it - and a 25 L boiler could make far greater volumes but this is small a pot still and not a reflux, and pot stills are not designed to make vodka efficiently. Horses for courses. Pot stills make whisky or brandy well and that means you want flavor notes from the distillate to come through and if the wash or mash was itself very drinkable, then the spirit leaving that still is too, whether you collect the cuts in 50 ml beakers or collect them in 100 ml beakers or as a single 400 to 500 ml cut.

      @@kb2vca I would like to point out that there is nothing wrong with turbo yeast if used correctly but that's a whole topic in it's self.
      The filtering isn't due to it being poor quality but like you have said your self its a pot still, flavors get carried over and the filtering removes alot of excess flavors so you can easily add a whole array of flavors to it easily making a whole bunch of things.
      if you were going for high quality using a still of this size then its just not practical for the application.
      you either need to be really experienced and skilled which lets be honest if you were, you would have a bigger one or do multiple runs to achieve the high quality you would be looking for which isn't really worth it time wise as you can alter the settings to do a stripping run or alter cooling temperatures.
      it is what it is

    • @kb2vca
      @kb2vca 4 роки тому +1

      @@makinghomebrewwildandcheap It IS what it is ;-) and for what it costs and for the fact that it does not require a river of water to cool the condenser, what it is is pretty damn good. And as an ex-pat Scot now living in the States and as someone who was weaned on Laphroaig and Talisker - if what goes in is NOT filled with fusels and high alcohols other than ethanol then what comes out is not at all bad. And sure, if you try to collect anything more than about 500 ml then you are collecting garbage tails, but in my experience this still can make a great base for fruit brandies, for nut liqueurs, for chocolate or coffee liqueurs, even for arak.

    Handy tip for the UK: Get a cheap transformer from 240v down to 110v (plenty on ebay) and run the pot at half power. But at the same time plug the fan-in seperately to your usual outlet, so it's on full power. It will take hours (all damn day) but it will gain you 5% abv and really helps a lot with smearing between heads, hearts and tails. You can now do more exciting recipes. You can also fill the gin-basket with copper-wool which will help the flavour.

    According to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission distilling is pretty much illegal here in Texas. Do to the dangers of old-school stills. With the ability to buy stills like the one you used TABC has relaxed enforcement of the laws on distilling for personal use. The nice lady I talked to on the phone said that making 4 or 5 gallons at a time is not a problem, but making 300 or more gallons a year is when they start to look into what you are doing. LOL
    Edit: I posted this in part for anyone in Texas that watchs these great videos, and just for food for thought. :-)

    Hi Lee. I bought one of these gadgets (same same but not this brand). First thing I did was run through a gallon of cheap goon (cardboard box wine) just to get a result. The wine was 11% so I reasoned that the first 450 mils or so to come off would be the alcohol. It was rocket fuel but the intensity of fruity lexia flavour was not great so I ran it through a britta filter a few times to dull that. I discovered sugar wash and as that is dirt cheap to make and comes out as a clean tasting spirit, I am now into making Gin. Please confirm I am doing this right - just taking the first half litre or so. The rest goes down the drain. I have enough stock now to do a second run. In that case, how much do I leave in the "kettle"? And what is it's quality - as the stuff I make in a first run will not freeze - so apparently no water in it. I may wait until the alcohol meter I have ordered arrives (pending your reply) as I do not yet have a hydrometer etc.

    • @makinghomebrewwildandcheap
      @makinghomebrewwildandcheap  6 років тому +2

      hey, so you took the plunge, nice.
      the air still is quite handy but best to really only use sugar washes. ( as you have found out) if i recall rightly, if you are planning on doing a double run and your washes are at 11% you can collect a liter which makes it around 30% ish so in 4 runs you have 4 liters from that you can get around 1.2 liters at 80% ish you will need more than 1 collection jars I suggest 8 and collect in 150 ml intervals ( label the jars), think of it like pick and mix, you will notice different flavors in each one and choose which you like.
      a spirit hydrometer is handy for finding out what % you have but you can fore go it if you don't really care as long as it tastes good. then the best option is taste!
      try whats coming out of the still at regular intervals ( and also drink water) you will with a little practice be able to tell heads , hearts and tails :)

      @@makinghomebrewwildandcheap , well , 43 % is really low , try it out in the snow , and it will improve , the cooling part off the destiller is not very good , but wil improve when its outside in cold air ,

      @@breakfastbuddy5 43% for a finished product is actually pretty good. go check out the spirit isle, 37% is the standard. the air still is just a pot still with a fan and as i'm sure you know even if it was 43% after 1 run that beats every other pot still.
