This video is the real deal. I replaced my rack in a 1997 CIVIC in 3.5 hours with breaks saving $600 / $700 repair bill. Couple comments, get and use the penetrating oil, try and get the floor boot on the rack prior to putting it in place, and turn the steering column left/right to shrink the driver’s side to provide the clearance to remove the rack. Mine was a manual transmission model and I did have to drop the shifter rod to get clearance.... Thanks again...
Damn man, this kinda job takes me a weekend. I take lots of breaks but I also just get frustrated and leave it for a while hahaha. That's awesome you can work thru it in a few hours!
hey Erick thanks for taking the time to make all these awesome videos I have learned a lot with them, not all people are that kind to teach others.Keep it up
Intro and Exit haven't seen in ages youtube Recommending the older videos and just great entertainment to watch can't wrench because of my accident so watching videos to pass the time for my neck to heal thanks @EricTheCarGuy
Good job you just turned a very complicated task into easy and fun. Good clear video and nice audio . You saved me hundreds of dollars and months of school . Thank you thank you
Eric, great "How to..." for anyone that needs to replace the PS on their Honda. Well shot and narrated. One suggestion to anyone attempting this job, I put the boot that mates the PS with the firewall onto the PS rack before I wiggled the left side of the rack into place. That was a lot easier than trying to get in on the rack when tucked up into its spot.
Just did this today on a '99 EX coupe using Eric's video as a guide, thanks for putting this up. For those having trouble with the pressure and return lines, there's a 10mm bolt on the top side of the crossmember that holds the pressure line guide, remove it and the clamp and you'll have lots more room to move it out of the way and back in later. Also, the directions in the Helm manual (search, you'll find it online) on reinstalling it, put the rubber pinion boot on first, then bolt in the rubber cushion and clamp, then follow rest of directions. Under no circumstances should you try to attach the lines at this point, I wasted 3 hours with this, and that's where I found the pressure line clamp as well. I also had an 96-99 Integra PS pinion installed into the remanufactured rack by the rebuilders, faster steering is nicer, 3.1 turns lock to lock vs. 3.6 (FYI: 00-01 Integra PS pinion will net you 2.9 turns LTL). I can now drive around easier using the left hand palm method while holding the large soda cup with the right hand (stupid Civic cupholders!!!)
Hey, how do you manage to slide racks out / in when they are centered? I tried anything - I can't do it. I had to compress the driver side all the way to get them out / in.
You have to pull on the passenger side all the way to make drivers side short as possible. Then it will go in. Once installed I had to have it towed to alignment shop. Toe and camber were all messed up.
@@phillipgaines4545 Well, that's what I did end up doing. Eric's video and manual seem to suggest you can get it in / out centered. thanks for quick reply! (the only alternative I could think of taking off inner tie rod, but this seems like a lot of extra work).
IMPORTANT INFO for someone who is unfamiliar with INNER TIE RODS. I fought re-installing the rack for 2 hours and it just WOULD NOT fit! Not even close! The tie rod end on the driver's side was way too long to fit into its' home spot. Then I found another video (thanks Michael Flare - UA-cam) that informed me the inner tie rod ends TELESCOPE end to end! You can push straight on the end of the inner tie rod and it will compress into the rack and extend out of the other side of the rack! I did this and installed the rack in 20 seconds! I hope this information is helpful for someone like me who is not a mechanic but has great success with repairs by following youtube videos. I don't know how stuff works! I just follow the video! :)
Eric the Car Guy: One thing I noticed in this video was that after working on the car, you proceded to get into it and drive it around while you were covered in grease, oil, and all kinds of gunk. Thats one of my pet peeves about mechanics, maybe you should get some covers on the seats, or garbage bag them. we pay tons and tons of money for our cars, some people even love their cars! Oil and grime from the mechanics body is the last thing we want all over our Leather/cloths seats!! cool vid's!!!
Thank you, Eric, for these 2 videos on this aggravating process! All your videos are amazing and you need to be paid double for your efforts to help the 'shade-tree' every guy. Do this again on a standard shift Civic! :)
Agree, I dont know how you work as a mechanic at your age without one. This video brings back painful memories of when I changed the steering rack in my 2000 Civic SiR, and I was only 25 years old when I had to do that job.
I have a 05 Honda Civic 4dr DX and your first video was major help even tho my rack was located up higher into the engine compartment and I had to remove it out the left side wheel well after spinning it counterclockwise as I slowly pulled it out... It was definitely a dirty job because after the valve on the side of it blew out I still had power steering fluid everywhere in the backside of the engine compartment . Long story short I’ve been watching a lot of your videos and I love them. Keep up the good job on the videos
Two points to add. Make sure you compress the boot and rack all the way to the right to get it in and out. Also be aware that not all racks come with the bushings/sleeves. You may have to order them seprate. They are not easy to find.
Wow Eric, you are so amazing. My mother has a 2000 civic with a bad power steering rack and we are going to change it soon. You came out with this video in the perfect moment. Thanks a lot for your hard work. I thank God for the day I found you in UA-cam and subscribed to you.
Thank you Eric for posting these videos. I'm getting ready to help a friend of mine with his 2012 Nissan Sentra. I've aready read up on the specifics instructions on his car and your videos match them amst to the tee. Again thank you for posting these videos, they have made everything much more vivid for me!
I love this guy Eric. Your videos have helped boost my confidence in car repairs and gave me enough reasons to go in for automotive technology. Thank you for showing the role patience play in the discipline.
Thanks for the long and elaborated answer. It's kind of strange why I wasn't notified when you replied to my comment. In my case, I just need to remove the steering rack to replace a specific part on it that is broken. So I guess centering the rack isn't totally necessary since I simply just have to not touch the steering wheel and the alignment of the rack. But still, very helpful of you.
I wanna thank you for posting this video. I did this job over the weekend and your video helped me a ton. It gave me the confidence to do the job. I had been postponing it for quite a while but after watching your video I dived right in. It was still a challenging job based on some hiccups during removal but I am glad I did it. It will be a breeze if I were to do it again. Keep up the good work Eric!
Thanks for your part 1 and part 2. I was able to change out mine on a 97 honda. I did learn a manual has a few more things in the way! Thanks again. You saved me about a 1000.00 bucks
Thank you for making and posting these videos. The p/s pump and then rack failed on my 97 Civic DX and i was told it would be 1000 to 1200 to fix it. Car has 200000 miles on it but still going strong no leaks so would like to keep it. With the help from your videos i was able to do it for less than 300. You make great videos and give clear instructions throughout and its nice that you try and bring the camera in with you to show us how everything looks. Youve certainly earned yourself another subscriber and many more views :D Now i need to clean up. I dont mind becoming dirty but i dont want to stay it :p
Eric, thank you for this video. Just did mine and the video was awesome. Only when I got the tires on the passengers was turned out just a bit. Ginna take the tire back off and spin out the tie rod one turn. Also, should I vacuum bleed the system before I start the car. Ive read that that should be done or it could damage the rack and pinion. I see you didn't, so I just wanted to make sure.
Hey Eric, Honda did some thing right! The power steering rack replacement seems much easier on a Honda Civic than a Ford Windstar. Thankfully, because I will be doing a PS R&R for my 2000 Honda Civic in the very near future! Thanks for this video Brother.
Love your detail. Getting ready to do a 2004 MDX. Just want to be clear on the cable reel in the steering column. Once I disconnect the steering joint as long as the steering wheel does not move during the steering gear replacement I should not have a problem correct. The manual has you taking the air bag and steering wheel off and I really do not want to go there if I do not have too. Thanks again, your videos are awesome. Tim
hey hook up fluid, and test the rack for leaks,, So there is VERY little chance that they return it to center,, with that said- Any new rack that you buy must be centered.. the easiest was is to measure when the rack is NOT installed yet.. grab the part that your steering wheel connects to. and turn it all the way one way.. until it stops/locks. THEN,
After I did watch Part 1 and part 2 your video about Steering Rack replacement, you did awesome job and excellence job.Thank you for your Video.God always blessed you and your families.
Funny I started watching his videos out of curiosity and now I am watching them because I am on this subject in college. Actually comes in quite handy, though I still do not wish to do the online stuff.
Note: You should always check the tyre pressures with the vehicle on the ground. Tyres in the air will have less compression on the air within them than tyres on the ground.
Thank you so much for the time you took dong this video. Whether or not I decided to to this myself, the information you provided is very useful. Appreciate the good work!
Eric I'm very appreciative of your videos. This was very helpful. The only thing I would point out if when putting the tires back on the vehicle call out that to torque the lugs to manufacture's recommendations because if not it could cause rotors to warp causing a lot of vibration when breaking. I've learned this myself the hard way. Thank you very much for your videos.
I know this is an old video but thanks again etcg!! You saved me a lot of money over the years working on all my hondas!! This video just helped me out this weekend and your right the biggest pain of the job besides the lines is getting that big pos in and out if there.. oh and all the rust falling in your face since i live in Wisconsin and working on 22yr old salt belt car!!
Wow amazing. Love that u show people how to do it step by step. Even when u make a mistake or something goes wrong u still show it. Great video and very informative. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work. God bless.
Man keep doing what your doing these videos are amazing. Specifics, bolt mm sizes, I even love the things to note portion at the beginning, keep up the good work Eric!!
Eric, when I did this: I just used tape to mark the location of the nut. It is more accurate than counting threads, and less time too :D Hope this helps!
Cool tip. Not all threads are equal. One manufacturer will thread further from the end than the other, so I've always wanted to try using a ruler. At least to check to see if tape or thread counting method would even be accurate.
Question please. What do you measure ? Every manufacturer would make it's parts little bit diffrently. Obviously, the only valid measurement would be between the two tires. But, it is hard to measure that accurately also.
I was just about to ,, chime in, and let Eric the car guy know,, that he missed a HUGE ** VERY IMPORTANT STEP*** centering the rack. I know the company I bought my replacement from, pressure tests the racks, that they sell.. so do most decent companies.so what that means is
Excellent video, thanks. I'm currently replacing the power steering rack on my 2000 Miata and was wanting to know if I had to bleed the system or if I can just let the bubbles out. It's a good start but I have car-specific verification to do. Thanks!
Hey Eric, thanks for the video. I appreciate you for making it LOOK fun and easy yet in honesty it being easier said then done. My dad and I would do this project on 93 civic yet unfortunately I have to bring it to a shop. I prefer hands on cos I get to learn more about my car yet not having the right equipment and my dad with me here. Makes the task even more difficult in doing so. Thank you again for broadening my horizons! 🤙👌🙏✌🏻🤘
Hi Eric, if finances ever allow, you can always use one of those tiny go-pro style cameras to fit into tiny nooks and crannies; maybe attach one on your head, the end of your tools etc?
Great video as usual Eric. I need to replace the inner tie rod ends and not the whole rack. How would I remove those from the rack? Anything tricky I should worry about? A special tool? I have a 1996 Civic LX..Thanks again.
Thank you for this video, made it so much easier to do, does need alot of patience to do haha! Also for people doing this on a manual car the gear linkages need dropped down and i also dropped subframe to get more room to take rack in/out.
By far the best tech videos out there. Thanks for your knowledge eric. I'm seeking an apprenticeship and knowledge is power. Keep up your videos and il keep my part by watching!
Thanks a ton for the detailed videos man. The information shared saved me mistakes and invaluable time. Appreciate the effort you took to make these videos.
Hi , very detail video , I would like to ask you how high must be the tires from the floor in order to do this task , and don't have a rough time doing this task ? than you for your prompt answer
My guess is,, Eric, either forgot to explain this,, because it is simple for real mechanics,, and thus second nature, or,, he didn't actually center it (which I doubt) because he does good work, and explains things well --I have watched many of his videos.. if the rack is not centered,, it will lock out early when turning left or right,, depending on which way it is turned towards,, before connecting it all.
great video. I was replacing the intermediate exhaust pipe and noticed leaking from the boot on the rack(the passenger side). My daughter says there is a noise when turning and now I am wondering if this is the cause. The leaking is coming from the larger side of the boot. Any thoughts that this is leading to the rack seals leaking?
Thank you Brother Eric... i have a 1997 honda odyssey i have to replace the steering rack. my transmission also acting out, as i driven down the road i noticed when i come to a stop when it time for me to move again i have to shift it on 2 then put it back on D
He didn't mess with the "TOE", just the alignment. And yes, you can get pretty close but like Eric said... Get it slightly wrong and your tires will wear prematurely costing you a lot more than it costs to go to an alignment shop. Just get it decent and take it to the alignment right away. No need to try and get it perfect yourself since they will do it perfectly for you in a jiffy.
Hey EricTheCarGuy great video! I have a 1984 Chevy Pick-up that I believe has a broken seal in the power steering gear box, not the steering pump reservoir. Because it is leaking power steering oil. I just bought the original service manual for this truck. I am between doing it myself or taking it in to the shop. My concern is on special tools needed or that may come up that I may need. Or some unforseen thing that may pop up while in the process. Your thoughts?
One more thing. Right now I am installing a NEW tie rod end. Do I need a special tool to press it in; or do I simply tighten the nut (and it gets pressed in that way)? Thanks in advance for your help.
+Bob Simmons Its threaded, ( just loosen the nut, just back it of to where it loose and spin the tie rod off) That way you will be close to the alignment as it was before.
I have counted the threads on the tie rods and they were correct, although, now that you mention it, when I tried to put the steering column on the steering rack the steering wheel turned slightly (didn`t know in what direction-left or right) so it must be off by some amount? How do I align/center the steering wheel again?
Hey Eric, you do an awesome job on these repairs thanks. I did notice on my new rack it says that I must flush out the Power Steering system prior to installing the new rack or the warranty is voided. Can you give some input on your opinion of that. thanks again you do a great job.
How about - Thumbs up if you're watching this and own a 96-00 Civic and are doing it 1. because it's entertaining, and 2. you'll probably eventually have to do it!
Nice video, great edit, tons of infos, thanks! .. But, is it possible these outer rod-ends were previously installed upside-down? On mine, the side with the L/R stamp are facing down, and the 'arc' shape is allowjng more clearance regard the strut... Anyway, not to tell you what to do but.. Keep it on! 👍
Thanks Man , This was a helpful and interesting video. If I am going to take the time to re-build the front suspension on my 99 acura cl should I bite the bullet and replace the rack at the same time? the car has 160K
I have manage and done a steering rack replacement last year on my honda but when I turn the wheel full lock I have a better turning angle when I turn right than turning left. What adjustments do I need to do?
Hi Eric, Ih have a question for you, i need to change Power Steering Rack Replacement and i need to know if the 1998 Power Steering fit on my 1999 Si thank you
Great video's and pita job. Although the alignment will have to be corrected, i would mark the steering shaft splines that mates with the universal with a paint marker at the start to save some rework in the end with the steering wheel alignment. Just a thought.
I figured It out but not sure how it will impact my alignment later. I lightly tapped one of the ends of the rack to move the rods to get enough clearance to instal. I then tapped the other side and measured till equal lengths then connected to input on column. I understand that part of the alignment is the adjustment of outer tie rods, but if new rack is way off when input to column how does that get adjusted besides tie rods?
What are the torque specifications for the bolts for which the electric drill was used.I have only a torque wrench. I need the extended socket for it, so can you tell me what sizes of the bolts the electric drill was used for, too?
Hey when you are trying to ram the rack back in there in the beginning how do you get that inner tie rod past the control arm while simultaneously getting the steering shaft into the pocket!? I’m stuck at this part now and am half tempted to take the top end of the rack off! Please advise!?
Just finished mine. I had to drop the shift linkage, 5 speed, & could not get the tension pin back in with the dust boot in place. It's damaged anyway but I may buy a new one & attempt it again. Any tips or tricks?

Thanks!
dude. i seriously wish you'd get your own show. Like a show JUST like the channel. It'd be pretty wicked. :D
hopefully this goes well with my 94 integra.. anything to keep in mind when i do this for my specific car??
Eric, you are simply great! Thank you for the videos and go on!
Ericthecarguy's #1 rule: Never cheap out on anything tire related. Uneven wear is a bit of a safety concern after some time. Just my 2 cents worth
Youve come a long way man. Been watching since youve had very few subs. Good work man 👌
Hi Eric, if finances ever allow, you can always use one of those tiny go-pro style cameras to fit into tiny nooks and crannies; maybe attach one on your head, the end of your tools etc?
Thanx Eric - Working on my 2000 Mercury Cougar today.. - Rob From Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada..
Indeed. Not only the inside at the clamp, but also the manifold side looks pretty bad. Or it that just a loose outer shell?
tight spot there.the opel and some toyotas are not too handy to remove either, fitted a few there this last while.good vid.
It was a clean install. Once I see what it looks like I've learned. thx
Hi , very detail video , I would like to ask you how high must be the tires from the floor in order to do this task , and don't have a rough time doing this task ? than you for your prompt answer
Wouldn't it be a good idea to change those bolts? They are quite rusted out... Or would you suggest just a light sand and spray some primer on top?
My guess is,, Eric, either forgot to explain this,, because it is simple for real mechanics,, and thus second nature, or,, he didn't actually center it (which I doubt) because he does good work, and explains things well --I have watched many of his videos..
if the rack is not centered,, it will lock out early when turning left or right,, depending on which way it is turned towards,, before connecting it all.
Great job Eric, thanks for all the great videos and great shots.
I read somewhere that you should use compressed air on the return line to blow dust and dirt particles out of the system, is this advisable?
great video.
Thanks you mr eric for the encourage to do this kind of work with every instrucción need it to get the repair done!
+Bob Simmons
Its threaded, ( just loosen the nut, just back it of to where it loose and spin the tie rod off) That way you will be close to the alignment as it was before.
Great video Eric! It has given me the confidence to attempt this project. Just to get your opinion, what are the symptoms of a bad rack and pinion?
Big Thank You, Eric. You are the man!
Keep it on!
👍
The bolt at the end faces down
EL MEJOR VIDEO QUE HE PODIDO VER HASTA EL MOMENTO ACERCA DE ESTE TEMA.
MUY BUENO

And by the way thanks to you ive managed to do a lot of jobs on my car and my buddies civic Si no doubt you are THEE BESTES THANK YOU
thanks ERIC, DIY GUY YOUR VIDEOS HELP OUT A LOT
Do you use torque limiting nuts when tightening the various suspension bolts?
My Honda Civic 04 power steering packed in 2 years ago. It takes a bit of getting used to but its been driving fine.
Thanks Man , This was a helpful and interesting video.
If I am going to take the time to re-build the front suspension on my 99 acura cl should I bite the bullet and replace the rack at the same time? the car has 160K
yes this is true i just pulled mine out yesterday i have a 2000 manual....about to get out there and install the new one in a bit.
Always very informative! Thanks alot Eric!
Did you get it?
Just finished mine. I had to drop the shift linkage, 5 speed, & could not get the tension pin back in with the dust boot in place. It's damaged anyway but I may buy a new one & attempt it again. Any tips or tricks?
